The Smiths – Rusholme Ruffians Lyrics 16 years ago
This song told me something about myself I couldn’t have quite figured out on my own. Maybe it’s hard to explain without Johnny Marr in the background…but this is definitely part of my soundtrack.

I’ve always been one to gravitate somehow (willing or not) towards the certain breed of folks described here… from carnival people to ‘hardcore’ clubbers…it was same thing. But I always felt somehow obligated to be with them. They’ve mostly been the ‘in-crowd’ in a dozen different life-circumstance related ‘scenes’ I’ve found myself in. Not happy & dealing with it…but knowing I was above it….and my faith in love is still devout

Steely Dan – Only A Fool Would Say That Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a letter to hippies. Pointing out what's obvious, but we hate to admit: their 'message' is something that only fool's and fraud's wear on their sleeve. One more reason to love Steely Dan. I kind of thought it might be about Martin Luther King and cynisim caused by his death (man with dreams, shooting, etc) ... but reconsidered.

The Replacements – Sixteen Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
Right on ….this is absolutely John Hughes-esque. But was it Uncle Buck or Weird Science that tackled teenage homosexuality so directly? (Chet wasn’t gay, was he?) Come on… did you even listen to this mister mister? Nudge..Nudge.. everything is sexually vague

Wilco – The Lonely 1 Lyrics 16 years ago
Jeff is so taken by music, the good music... and this one is a bitter sweet confession of a deep connection between musician and fan ...the music has made him almost love-sick. It might be a tribute by Jeff to Paul Westerberg, and in fact this song seems to me much in style of one of those heart-on-sleeve Replacement songs.

The Replacements – Swingin' Party Lyrics 16 years ago
Westerberg's humanity and honest shine through on this one...I see it as a sort of abstract description of addiction ..a realization that he is partying ...except the party aint so fun anymore ...and hes stuck (I love the inhale thats dubbed in) "...if being strong is what you want, then I need help here with this feather"...additction feels makes you feel weak

Big Star – I'm in Love with a Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
Previous comments are great. Sometimes you might asked: “How do you know when you are really in love?”. I think the best answer could be to say go listen to this song. A real love is simple and blissful… and Alex Chilton tells it like it is.

Big Star – Thirteen Lyrics 17 years ago
I listen to most albums without looking at song titles, but eventually get around to it – as with this one. I loved the song, but after learning the intended context once I saw the title – I was floored. To me, it’s pretty clear this is about an older guy (but not a *really* older guy) – that is love sick over a young girl. These lyrics are at once perverse and sweet, and with such a beautiful melody – Alex Chilton demonstrates his gifts as a human and a musician.
