t.A.T.u. – Lyudi-Invalidy Lyrics 8 years ago
@[tyler10972:4652] it makes more sense in english as shame but the russian obida is defined as hurt/injury/wrong. Something that you do rather than something you feel, this was the main reason I wrote "wrong". Your take of course makes more sense so I'd agree with it.

I would have written "blink and die/say it is nonsense/blink and tell a lie/that you will love for ever" so again, I'd say your take is right. The difference between blink and shut your eyes is purely a stylistic choice.

The other thing is, it is most definitely "they are drowned like kittens" not "they are like drowned kittens". The words describe a wilful, forceful act in progress.

The above translation is not really correct.
This song uses very few words but they are rich in meaning; so bear with me. Russian has a very different syntax to Russian, making clauses written without subjects (like these) difficult to translate.

People-Invalids

Don't take what's not yours
Don't give away your own
Blink and die
Love and die
Say it and swear it is the truth
Say it is nonsense
Die and pretend
That you will love forever

Chorus: (x2)
An evening without love
A morning without wrong
Invalid people
Invalid people

The lost aren't waited for
The sad aren't wanted
These don't live
They're drowned like kittens

Chorus x2

Note: the song is very vague on who is speaking, who is spoken to, who is spoken about. The verbs that hang around aren't given a subject.

Ellegarden – Space Sonic Lyrics 11 years ago
It seems to be a call to someone whom he has broken up with or isn't as close to anymore. It's a very cute song, full of cheap and cute emotions. Longing, guilt...

It does seem that he has pushed someone away rather than the other way around,
"I'm not going anywhere/I thought you'd only make me weak". It sounds like at one point in his relationship with this person, he wasn't ready to make certain commitments, and thought that it would make him weaker. But "that's wrong", because as I myself have found, being with someone is a very demanding and strengthening task.

Because of the distance that he himself has created, and maybe some subsequent mistakes, he now feels very guilty, "like you are the most useless on the planet Earth". He wants to fix his mistakes by coming back to this person because he still feels something for them and wishes they were with him. Moreover, he has gained some extra courage of his own that enables him to go on no matter what - "I found the shiners of my own/A fantasy Good memories" - I don't know what shiners are, but they must be very inspirational, feel-good things. I think he hopes these new, positive qualities of his will recommend him to the person he addresses in the song.

Die Antwoord – Beat Boy Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's just a poem, like he says at the start. A lot of it is probably fantasy, and definitely, there's violence mixed in but I don't think it's anything beyond just an element of the story. I certainly don't think it's meant to be a serious allusion to a particular rape.

It seems to be just a really fanciful description of sex, where the main character, a girl, is held in very deep reverence by Wad:e. This, I think, is the main point, and it's supported by lines like
"I think about you when I masturbate
You can't even believe it but that's OK" and
"A thousand guys totally under your spell
They all totally scared of the power you hold
You can change the rules of the game and devour their souls".

I think he's trying to describe how much this girl means to him by listing a seemingly endless scenario where she is the focus and the possessor of an infinite amount of power to enchant him further, no matter how wild the last sexual encounter was.

Akeboshi – Night and Day Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a really beautiful song. It's great to sing to, if you can manage the register and the long lines, but at least now, I find it nearly impossible because I'm crying at the same time.

It's a song about bereavement and loss. In the first verse, we find out he's sitting near somebody's grave, and reflecting on the world around him. I suppose the rabbits could be bittersweet, "always together", while the person whose grave he's visiting can't be with him anymore. And it's obvious he hasn't gotten over the loss, "Because I know I feel out of place/ Anywhere I go". Other people's stories have always intrigued me, and so I feel the same thing as Akeboshi when I see an airplane. It's exactly the sort of musing that fits into a song like this.

In the second verse he expands on the feeling of being out of place. "Time flows past me like a never-ending river" - feeling swept away, a totally extemporary life, where nothing feels real. I don't think you have to lose someone to know how this feels, it's something that just happens to most people. You stop and look around and see nothing. It's a song about a memory that won't let you be.

Hilary Duff – Come Clean Lyrics 12 years ago
I wouldn't even give this song a second glance if it wasn't what I listened to for a large amount of time when I was 12. But my interpretation of the song hasn't changed since then, and it's always been about becoming a new person true to yourself and free of pretensions.

"Coming clean", as well as standing in the rain and letting it wash over you, always symbolised washing the dirt of yourself away. Washing away all the bad things about you, becoming a better, new person and "trying to find a pigment of truth beneath my skin" meant looking inside to see who you really were, and following that. Yes, it's cliched "be yourself" pop sloganism, but for a 12 year old it's meaningful, when all the other things on TV didn't even get to THAT level of deepness.

"Trying to fit a square into a circle" made me think of society's expectations, especially in primary/high school where you're either in or weird or nobody, so you end up forcing yourself to be somebody else. This song is all about rebelling against people's expectations and staying yourself. Not boys or anything like that. Even her more bf-focussed songs retain this sort of pure, asexual message. That's why I don't mind the fact that I listened to her when I was young.

Moloko – Absent Minded Friends Lyrics 12 years ago
One of my favourites from Moloko. It has the most amazing atmosphere; low acoustic piano and electronic all mixed in from the start. I really love the piano sound in this, it's so rich. One of its best uses I've ever seen. Normally the low keys clash with whatever else is playing but here it's perfect, almost like drums.

It feels wrong to try and define this song. It's very eclectic; I don't think it has one central theme but many. The one thing it does make me think of, though, is alcohol. From the beginning where she says
"shall we drink a toast" and "to those who went round the bend", which has a second meaning of becoming intoxicated. Much of the lyrics sound like they're coming from a drunk person, too, but I don't know if that just the song or Roisin's natural style xP

Moloko – Familiar Feeling Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree with Stickysen above, but maybe it's not from her perspective? Or only partly. I don't think all of the lyrics have to come from Roisin's POV.

All of Statues is sad, really. They had to make it even after they broke up, and that's really amazing to me. It makes me sad that they couldn't continue to work professionally together, but that's really not my place to judge. This song is probably the one that expresses the sadness the best out of all of them, not because it's the saddest, but because it has this little bit of joy - this familiar feeling - mixed in that makes the unhappiness more pronounced.

I think everyone knows the feeling of lost closeness when a couple breaks up. Especially for the party that didn't initiate the break-up, it's harder to deal with. Suddenly, it's either gone, or still there, but more awkward, and you have to deny it until it goes away completely. This song does feel almost like an argument for re-starting a relationship, but at the same time, it's like she's saying, Things will be the way they will be:-
"I never doubted it
What's for you will not pass you by"
and
"It's all there ever was
And it's all there ever will be"
so even if the relationship's gone, that's the way things should be. She realises this, but the familiar feeling persists.

Amy Macdonald – Youth Of Today Lyrics 12 years ago
I think you misunderstand her intentions; she admits all the faults of her generation pretty quickly,
"don't care what you have to say at all" and
"we'll say what we wanna say".

Not even she could miss the obvious arrogance of those statements. The problem here is that you're assuming she's trying to make an argument proving others are wrong, but that's not what she's doing. She's actually encouraging freedom of thought and individuality of opinion; that's what Youth of Today stand for.

She is trying to argue against failing to talk to youth, engage with them, or even to try to understand them at all, WHILE IMPOSING THEIR OPINIONS UPON THEM. That is what she's criticising. This is obvious in
"And you don't know a single thing about the youth of today
Stating your opinion, making it ring in my head"

This song specifically deals with an imposition of opinion from the elder generation upon the younger. Anyone will agree it's not right to impose your opinion on others regardless of circumstance, and this is exactly what is happening. Her issue is that others opinion's are being forced down her throat without any understanding or consideration for reality or change of times. Her reaction to this is, I don't have to listen to you if you won't listen to me:
"And maybe if you had a true point of view
I would listen to you
But it's just your one sided feelings
They keep getting in my way"

which is perfectly true, and not arrogant or short-sighted at all. She can't have an argument if the other side won't listen to her, so she's saying she won't argue at all.

PJ Harvey – Man-Size Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree with honeyweed, it's definitely a feminist song. What she's trying to get at beyond that, though, escapes me. I think lines like

"I've got to get/ Man-sized"
"I'll calculate my birthright" and
"No need to shout/ Can you hear can you hear me now"

are all expressing pretty general feminist ideals. There's an element of fitting in to society and being able to compare with everyone else and that hinges on your "man-size" and lack of femininity. In that sense it does sound a lot like penis comparisons... But obviously there's a female sensibility and an over-awareness of the male-ness in the song. It's not simply written from a man's POV, but written in a man's voice but with female comments.

LM.C – Little Fat Man Boy (English) Lyrics 12 years ago
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the obvious references. It's an interesting take, and I think it's Fat Man's voice. This is indicated by the title and the reference to his brother becoming a cloud first. The lyrics here are a bit dodgy, http://wareta.net/choubun/lmc-littlefatman.html is better.

The childish references to the mushroom, cotton candy (clouds/sky), becoming the sun (the white flash an atom bomb makes) and diving into an enormous diorama (Nagasaki) are somewhat chilling. You can tell LM.C would support Nuclear Non-Proliferation by the last verse.

I don't know why the bomb would be 'God'. But I think the father figure is Dr. Oppenheimer, and the entire first verse references his genius (it was that. It was also hugely destructive and sad) and the Manhattan Project, which was the project that developed the atom bomb. The continual laughing and crying reference is from his quote about the first successful trial -
"Some people laughed, some people cried, most people were silent." http://www.atomicarchive.com/Movies/Movie8.shtml

Goldfrapp – Happiness Lyrics 12 years ago
As everyone has said, it's pretty specific about cults (I would say ALL religions, not just cults) and even using them as a metaphor for other engagements.

I think what that means is Goldfrapp denying any cure-all, or saying that there is no such thing that leads to eternal happiness. Happiness is ephemeral, and thinking that any one thing will bring it to you for ever is fundamentally flawed. This is what I get from the lines "How did you get to be happiness" and "We're all on journey to/Finding the real inner you". The sarcastic tone implies both of these are unattainable, or at least, they don't exist as per our idealised version of them.

Archive – Fuck You Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the central point of the song is certainly that it can be about anyone, but certain clues point towards the fact that it may have originally been about/inspired by self-hate. Along with the things already mentioned, can I note how hard it actually is to sing this - the first verse, that huge chunk, is said in one gulp, there's practically no pause and you need really good timing and breath management to pull it off. Then at the end of the verse, the last line comes in with the heavy guitar and reinforcement : "why the fuck are you looking at me?"

It's then repeated and is the most prominent line in the song. It's meant to come as a surprise; after all, it's already been said that they'll never meet - so why INDEED are they looking at him? This is I think the biggest question to be settled. If we go with the celebrity theory, which is one of the many possible (not wrong) interpretations, it would have to be because they're looking at a picture/video of the person staring back at them. But that doesn't make any sense; it's really quite an ordinary thing, not deserving the loud crash of guitars and drums and such.

The only way it can make such a jarring psychological impact on the person writing the song is if it's a personal realisation - they've been hating this singular person/their faults so much, and finally they can bear to admit to themselves that it's actually self-hate.

Emiliana Torrini – Tuna Fish Lyrics 13 years ago
From http://www.bongossportfishing.com/tunatriv.html, I've been able to gather that they are warm-blooded and generate their own body heat from quick movement. They swim slower in warm waters and quicker in cold waters to prevent overheating; also, during the night they swim closer to the surface. I haven't been able to find any evidence of floating belly-up, though. In fact, if a tuna fish stops moving it will suffocate, but tuna fish readily swim upside down to cool down, or slow down. They swim even when they're sleeping. I suppose 'floating' could mean very slow swimming.

Maybe that line is an extremely confusing metaphor for tuna fish dying; "just one way to get them some sedation". But no, I'd probably trust Emiliana Torrini on this one. it sounds halfway plausible if they're swimming at a very slow speed.

Dir En Grey – Toguro (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
Agreed with most of the above; "Be broken so mount" seems to me like another reference to evolution and natural selection. The broken - ie, the masses (I get a feeling Kyo sympathises with them just a little bit from the adjective) - just keep on reproducing and shut their eyes to reality, perhaps using reproduction/the act of sex as an escape in itself, though this isn't one of his perverse-focus songs. Just consoling themselves of their worth while creating more people like them.

'kill the tongue' - suppressing opinions? as in, not killing the whole body but just the tongue, the ability to express individuality.
'silence of the white' - no idea, except for possible connotations of white: white is neutral, pure, - perhaps, referring to the 'purity' everyone is expected to have - keeping up with general opinion and not tarnishing reputations
'it bloats as words' - connected to the earlier idea of killing the tongue; the words bloat but don't burst

The next verse seems to be about giving in to the idea of 'sin', doing things that are prohibited (sometimes wrongly?) which everyone does but won't acknowledge.

'She' does seem to be a conglomerate of humanity depriving itself of its own self-expression, peeling off life, and all possibility of really living, ie the 'petals of the butterfly', its ability to fly/freedom (- what a beautiful metaphor!!!)

The last verse may discuss the commercial aspect of all this, how it's broadcast by media and popularised, upheld by celebrities, etc (in my version of the song; kyo's lyrics are always vague enough to give off two or three interpretations).

This song seems to be about suppression. Suppression in the terms of the strictures that humanity imposes upon itself, of always being morally upright, with nonsensical standards of good behaviour, or of the obsession with maintaining a good reputation, a thing that is recycled generation upon generation until we'll all end up slaves to our own image (not in the bodily sense).

This is just mho; putting it up for a general interpretation.

shouldn't it be 'why are there tears?'

anyway, after a really long time... I figured out this song refers to rainbows in the dark, something apparently physically impossible. Hah. Whoever said that obviously never heard Shou hit the high notes ^^

It's quite a nice song, great video and it grows on you... I took quite a bit of it away with me. It's a bit of a different translation than the one I'm used to... But still makes me think of a 'rise up' call. That you should stand up and this song will always be there to back you up.

Gackt – Maria [English] Lyrics 15 years ago
one wonders upon first reading what exactly he thinks and what degree of sarcasm he is using. it's a pretty angry, rough and overall violent song. So I'd say he's pretty angry about what he's singing. Then again, this is life.. redemption. forgiveness - who wouldn't be angry?

as a christian i know exactly where he's coming from... (i wasn't always one) and... it's pretty sad... despairing, does he wish it was true or is he just discarding the last traces of remorse for the birds?

all i know is, he wrote a song about it. go Gackt.

does anyone know exactly what he says towards the end? in Mina-P's translation she said it was something about hearing his voice over the music but didn't specify...

an ironic play on itself?
a plea for hope?
it seems to be definitely about drugs... about people who would WANT to erase themselves. In that sense, it's pretty self-explanatory, but deeper, I think, is the desire that would make someone write this, and what motivates that.

X Japan – Rusty Nail (English) Lyrics 16 years ago
LUUUUUUUUUUUUURVE this song. Toshi is an angel. Yoshiki is an archangel. X Japan is a godsend.

UMM okay onto the song. It's like he can't -won't- forget someone he had loved that died, prob. by suicide. And he refuses to cry, or even think about it, because then he'll have to face the memory and if he does, he might get over it and forget, and he doesn't want to forget because the memories are so beautiful and so painful, that all he can do is shut them out.

And the rusty nail is a metaphor for the memories themselves. The memories are old and ignored - exactly like a rusty nail that continue to stab his heart all the time. Rereading I get the sensation that perhaps the person he loved didn't love him back..? Maybe? That even if the perosn was alive he'd go through just as much suffering? just cuz of the 'tell me my life/wherever i will walk... i won't see my tomorrows'

GOSH, does anyone ELSE absolutely ADORE the part near the end when Toshi holds that note and the music kinda fades (but is still there) and you hear just his voice and then the music comes back... OOH BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SOOOOOOOONG.

were those two last posts in another languange...? Itihnk this song is about sex too. More specifically, having sex with someone that the author really really dislikes. About how he know he'll regret it, but he can't seem to do anything other than go along with it, even though everything elsein him is telling him not to. Seduction by someone...?

The last two lines could be about the material side of sex, bout how if there's no spirituality in it, then it is all just flesh and meat, flesh and meat... no purpose, no meaning.

At first I reckoned the singing killed the pretty instrumental part. I mean, if you listen to it, there's the first harpsichord-sounding thing with the wind sounds, and then the bass comes in with the strings, and it sounds so good, and when Sharon den Adel starts singing it all kinda ruins the tingly sounds.. but you get used to it after a while... and it all sounds pretty. :)
But yes, ithink it does mean the progression of life and then death thing. Actually, this was on my list of things to play at my funeral too. Wow, what a coincidence.

1349 – Celestial Deconstruction Lyrics 16 years ago
wiki says it's about Angel Sanctuary, a manga series...(by Kaori Yuki, who has to be just a tad twisted) I'm inclined to believe that. This is sooo much like the books, where a huge battle between heaven and hell is going on, with many people doing what they think is right even though many of those things are wrong, and where innocence is just as easily massacred as evil.

In fact, purity and good take the biggest blows.

The song- I think it's about one person, or maybe many, coming to realise that their world is not what they thought, and opening their mind to the truth - that is deep and dark, and realising they've been living a lie. And that through it all, they have to stand tall and somehow keep going, even though most likely at the next step they'll be slaughtered.

if that makes any sense..

It starts straight into it... COOl... I love it when they get the cute jap chicks at the end to sound all cute (sorry I love it when cute people sound cute), and the guys say something over and over that sounds like "tsu" - that end part sounds really good... no idea what it means... but Idon't think it'll take much figuring out. Since when was R&B deep?

Dir En Grey – [KR] Cube (English) Lyrics 16 years ago
Gion...??? I'm lost. is it a district? Well, all I can say is- all hail the mighty power of DeG to continuously come up with unrelated names. pretty song. One of the few that actually make SENTENCES.... and paragraphs... harder to write, but easier to decode. However ihave no idea what it's about but his childhood, so I'm a hypocrite.

To me it seems like he's talking about an enchanted dream... with painted geishas mingled with dolls. like, not being able to tell the difference between the two..? I dunno, but it's pretty.

Samael – Angel's Decay Lyrics 17 years ago
it might be that HE was the fallen angel. May I mention just as I did in my other post on The Cross, Samael is the name of a fallen angel. A certain fallen angel, whose name changed after he broke off. Satan himself, actually.

maybe since Samael is so centered on Satan, as their name indicates, this song is their interpretaion of what it was like for Satan to become a being of darkness and hate, from what he was: a being of light and goodwill.

"I let the angel rise" maybe he's not saying that the good of him is freed, but that the good in him is DRIVEN OUT. To make way for his REAL nature.

I think this song is about the initial weakness that Satan must have felt before establishing himself as the Devil. Now that he is so high and mighty, he is ashamed he was ever like that.

It could very well be about depression, but considering the band's background, it looks like what it's name suggests :
"Angel's Decay", how an angel decayed into a being of evil, and instead of seeking the light, he sought out the dark instead.

Samael – The Cross Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Lord Nephthys is right... I mean, their name IS Samael.. and Samael, according to the Jewish Scriptures, was the name of SATAN before he became a devil. That may indicate they're anti-Christian.

Samael had been an archangel before he defied God, after which his name became Satan.

And yes I think this song is challenging us to think about whether we think for ourselves - or just follow plain old tradition, and also pointing a finger at WHERE tradition has got us.

What the lyricist probably didn't realise was that what he was saying was double-edged, it could prove his point or it could work against it. For example, some traditions really ARE unnecessary and useless, but some are grounded in truth. What we should all do when concerned with a challenge like this is to just... decide for ourselves, no matter what anyone says, not even the one who told us to decide in the first place.

I used to be a pagan, then I morphed into an atheist, then, for some strange reason became a Christian. And am staying that way. (I just remember that what the guy's saying could be taken both ways so I don't fel too much guilt)

Because how can they be so sure that Christianity is wrong?

However that doesn't stop me from absolutely headbanging along to every beat in this song: it's AWESOME!

Moonspell – Sacred Lyrics 17 years ago
This might be completely off, but when ilisten to it, the last time the line, "of love's eternal glory" is sung, it sounds like he's saying DEATH'S eternal glory... and the last line he repeats at the end of the song, it sounds more like, "That is fucking on hallow ground"... I know it makes no sense, as the rest is accurate, but knowing Moonspell, it's quite possible. Why would they cover a song like this? They've got an album called irreligious, hellooo.

So can anyone clear this up for me? Am I deluded, or did someone else notice it as well?
