Jim Croce – Bad, Bad Leroy Brown Lyrics 10 months ago
Big Jim Walker was the King of 42nd Street in Philly. Tall "Slim" Willie McCoy from south Alabama cut Jim up good, and now people says "You don't mess around with Slim!"

Leroy Brown (southside of Chicago) was the baddest man in the whole damn town. The jealous husband of Doris (who Leroy looked at) did to Leroy what Slim did to Jim.

The lesson Jim Croce was telling us: there's always a bigger, badder, or tougher guy than even the meanest predators.

Pink Floyd – Take It Back Lyrics 3 years ago
What many fail to consider or appreciate, is that in the early 1990's David Gilmour was coming to terms with his prior difficulty in lyric writing for the 1987 Pink Floyd album A Momentary Lapse of Reason. By 1993, with a new wife, Polly Sampson, a journalist and writer by profession, and with middle age and wisdom, she began to help his writing open up. The bitterness and resentments against former bassist, and phenomenal lyric wriiter Roger Waters, was finally beginning to fade, and wounds were starting to heal.

The painful end to the friendship between Roger and David left deep scars. All caused by terrible miscommunication, ego, and misunderstanding.

If you replace the pronoun "she/her" with "he/him", and consider the complex history of the band, you can better appreciate the song from a wholly different perspective.

If you've ever lost a dear friendship with someone over bitter, painful words you both said.... and you wished you could "take it [them] back", this song is less about the environment, and more about broken relationships.

@[ryano23277:23624] Hang in there Ryan O. My condolences to you.

I was best man to my best friend 3 years ago. A year ago he was diagnosed with 'early psychosis'. Every day I worry about him now. Suicidal thoughts, hearing voices.... all run through his head. I'm on the other side of the country and don't make enough money to go see him.

I worry a lot. Call him often. I feel for his new wife - it's hard on her too.

RIP Chester.

Shinoda wrote of this song: "One More Light was written with the intention of sending love to those who lost someone. We now find ourselves on the receiving end. In memorial events, art, videos, and images, fans all over the world have gravitated towards this song as their declaration of love and support for the band and the memory of our dear friend, Chester. Coldplay – Fix You Lyrics 7 years ago
@[kobrakaaii:15804] I absolutely agree. It's inaccurate and incomplete to think this is only a lamentation for broken relationships.

Long ago I read something beautifully profound: "The best definition of heartbreak is when a dream dies." The athlete who suffers a career ending injury. The son whose mother has passed away. The woman who is in the midst of a divorce. The business owner who closes shop one last time. All can prompt profound grief and sadness.

Those of us who care for and love family and friends who are suffering such sorrow are often seeking ways we can "fix" them. If only because we hate to see them hurt so much.

Disturbed – The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel cover) Lyrics 8 years ago
TofuBug2 - I totally agree with your point of view. Well stated. I might add that David Dramian's ability to convey raw emotion and bring to life the story is a lot like legendary artist Johnny Cash.

Might I add, that Dramian understand that SILENCE IS CONSENT.

Anytime Church Leaders remain silent about pedophile priests in their ranks, they consent to the atrocity.

Anytime Law Enforcement Officers close ranks to protect their own when police brutality has occurred upon the citizens they are sworn to protect, they consent to the abuse.

Anytime Women remain silent towards women who commit the same types of domestic
abuses of teacher-sex scandals that they would otherwise publicly outcry against if the same crimes were committed by men, they consent to their own kind.

Anytime Non-Minorities remain silent about the problems minorities are faced with, they consent to those problems.

Anytime Moderate Muslims remain silent to the atrocities committed by radical Islamists, they consent to those acts of terror, killings and murder.

Anytime Americans give a pass to their own for bad behavior, they consent to that behavior.

"Fools!" said I, "you do not know Silence like a cancer grows!"

POWERFUL rendition of this song. I grew up with the original, but this cover is better and more compelling.

I can relate to the feelings, paranoia, and insecurities of the narrator. In the past I have been in a similar place in my life. It sucked. A lot. And the worst thing is: the imaginings were just that: all in my head. But at the time, they were quite intense and affected me a lot.

And to the poster who said "people get jealous because they are vulnerable", I am persuaded that is absolutely true.

Rush – Bravado Lyrics 11 years ago
The best definition of "heartbreak" I have ever read was " Heartbreak is when a dream dies."

When that Olympian has a career-ending injury before winning a medal. When a marriage fails. When a child's life is cut-short before her parents get to see her grown up and succeed. When a person pours their heart into a business that fails due to circumstances beyond his control.

All these are dreams that die. The heartbreak is real, but the effort is worth the trying.

Pink Floyd – Country Song Lyrics 11 years ago
I would agree with previous posters: there is a Alice In Wonderland feel to this song. Yet, given Roger Water's having lost his father to armed conflict in World War II*, his disdain for war is not surprising.

Chess is a game of war, with the pawns being the enlisted infantry who bear the brunt of "dying". The White King's understanding and value of life and compassion to those who serve both him and the Red Queen lead him to voice his opinion and persuade the Red Queen to end the war games.

* "When the Tigers Broke Free" is a Pink Floyd song by Roger Waters, describing the death of his father, Eric Fletcher Waters, during the Second World War's Operation Shingle. British contribution to the Anzio campaign's Operation Shingle, where Allied forces landed on the beaches near Anzio, Italy, with the goal of liberating Rome from German control. These forces included C Company of the Royal Fusiliers, in which Waters' father Eric served. As Waters tells it, the forward commander had asked to withdraw his forces from a German Tiger tank assault, but the generals refused, and "the Anzio bridgehead was held for the price / Of a few hundred ordinary lives" as the Tigers eventually broke through the British defence, killing all of C Company, including Eric Waters.

LMFAO – Sexy and I Know It Lyrics 12 years ago
The last line of the song SHOULD read: "Its Redfoo with the big Afro, And like Bruce LEROY, rock out the club, yo."

The last line of the first verse is a reference to a character in a movie made for Berry Gordy called "The Last Dragon".

Stefan Gordy (Redfoo of LMFAO) is Berry Gordy's son.
Skyler Husten Gordy (SkyBlu of LMFAO) is Berry Gordy's grandson.

Berry Gordy, Jr. is an American record producer, and the founder of the Motown Records.

The Last Dragon is a 1985 martial arts musical film produced by Rupert Hitzig for Berry Gordy and directed by Michael Schultz. The film was a critical disappointment but a financial success, The Last Dragon is now considered a cult classic.

Set in New York City, the plot follows a teenage martial arts student named Leroy Green (often referred to as "Bruce Leroy", although he never calls himself that) with dreams of becoming a great martial artist like his idol Bruce Lee. Leroy goes on a quest to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as "The Final Level". Martial artists who reach this "Final Level" are said to possess "The Glow", a mystical energy that can only be attained by a true martial arts master. When a fighter's hands glow, he is one of the best in the world and when his entire body glows, he is the greatest fighter alive.

So NOW you all know the correct verse, what that line means, and who it refers to. The guys in LMFAO have a musical pedigree from a family that KNOWS good music.

Your analysis of SOM songs are quite comprehensive. JUst thought I'd add this:

In 1940 Methamphetamine was marketed under the trade name "Methedrine" by Burroughs Wellcome in the US. During WWII, Methadrine was commonly dispersed by the Army Air Corps (before it was later changed to be called the Air Force) as a means to help bomber pilots stay alert and focused on long missions over Europe and German controlled areas.

Hence: I hear the roar of a big machine (the big engines on the B-17 Flying Fortress)
Two worlds and in between (the Axis powers)
Hot metal and methedrine (guns on the aircraft)

I agree with Waterlink above. Most commenters here who hate this song probably are under 25 years old, and have not experienced real life. Yes, the band did a great job with this song. Listening to it is very cathartic becuase it helps the listener to recognize they are not alone in thier day-to-day struggles of life. If you've only had one job (like most kids) you have no way to relate to this song. If' you've never been married to a wife who won't "put out" - then you can't relate to this song. If you've never had a long fricken day at the office slaving away for people who don't appreciate you , only to have to deal with 30+ mile s of traffic to get home - then you can't appreciate this song.

Lots of young people today have had such good lives - they whine when thier parents don't buy them a new car every 2 years. GET fucking real! You need to grow up and get some erxperience of REAL life and what REAL struggle is about before you go shooting off your fat lips about a song you have no idea how to relate to . So just shut the fuck up and sit down assholes.

3 Doors Down – Citizen Soldier Lyrics 14 years ago
I normally don't post to this lyric site much anymore, but the ignorant comments by some incite me to not hold my tounge.

How come nobody has paid attention to the lyrics which read:

When there are people crying in the streets
When they're starving for a meal to eat, When they simply need a place to make their beds, Right here underneath my wing you can rest your head. ???

Does it not occur to any of you that this song was written by a band from Mississippi, a state just east of Louisiana. YES - THAT Lousiana! The same one devastated by a hurricane. Does it not occur to anyone that this song is about the National Guard's response and emergency aid to Weather related crisis? Crisis that include the flooding of Iowa. Hurricane's that affect Florida.

This song has NOTHING to do with WAR, nor the NATIONAL GUARD'S place in war. It's about the NG's service to thier fellow citizens to protect them from further harm and tragedy. Everytime I hear this song, my heart fills with pride and also a mild sadness knowing this song's inspiration was born of immeasurable human suffering. This song moves me to tears everytime I hear it.

And to the poster above who did mention that even regular U.S. Service men and women come to the aid of others around the world, I thank you. I am former U.S. Navy, and have many Navy friends today. One was aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln when it ported into Jakarta, Indonsesia. The ship's electricity generating power plant provided much need power to the country when it's power stations were decimated by the 2005 Tsunami. The U.S. Military came to the aid of Haiti after the terrible earthquake which has killed thousands. There is no other organization in the world capable of the logistical support and runway building that America's Armed Forces can provide.

If you hate America's involvement in wars, fine. You are entitled to that. But don't take this song out of context to spew out your opinions that have nothing to do with the message and point of this song: the National Guard of our country, be they Army, Air Force, Navy or Marine - all deserve the highest respect for being ready to serve on a moment's notice and to help protect thier countrymen from calamity.

Thank you to all who have served. I love you all and may God bless you and your familys for sacrifices made both great and small.

Rush – Good News First Lyrics 16 years ago
reedu - You have a great point - dead on. A point to consider: After the death of Neil Peart's wife and only daughter in the late 90's, his rebuilt his life and moved to Los Angeles with his new wife. I'm certain that he's picked up on the almost-cavalier & flippant attitude many Christians have. (I USED to be one - so I know what he probably obsesrved) . This song almost seems as his response to thier "taking lightly" of his sorrow and sadness (or that of others). Neil has, since the early 1970's, been the main lyric writer for Rush. He's always been an open skeptic of government, and especially religion. It seems to me, that in recent years, and in light of his moving to the United States, and the personal tragedy he's been through - he's only become more jaded, cynical, bitter and skeptical of faith, religion, and ideals of an "inherently good universe". These views have become more obvious and recognizable in his lyrics.

While every fan has a favorite band - and knows every song of that band - everyone of them will have a song that is thier "least favorite". that's fair enough. But to say this song doesn't have "any feeling" - well now... if this is coming form a true-blue Rush fan, well I'm simply astounded.

This song is tremendously beautiful in it's simplicity and elegance.

Every track on Hold Your Fire was an excellent, and, in my opinion - underrated - peice of work.

A Legendary Rock Band can be described as one whose "junk songs" STILL stand head and shoulders above most of the best songs of other non-Legendary Rock Bands.

some examples: (no particular order) Rush, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc.

I think all you guys are right. I happen to think the lyrics were most likely born of Neil's life experience of his daughter Selena's birth (in 1978) and the unpredictability of fatherhood. The album was released in 1987 - when Selena was 9.

Egor - I think you are really onto somehting there though. As well-read and intellectual as NEP is, it wouldn't suprise me if your observation was something Neil also had in mind when he wrote this song.

I'm feeling wealthy..so here's my two cents....

Rush is THE pre-eminent thinking man's rock band..

Anyways, I agree with a lot of folks here. - The song is about the celebrity-fan relationship. But I'm sure there are themes and motifs of the song we all can relate to. Barriers to "keep oneself in tact" are important for everyone to have.

Neil has ALWAYS shunned "the Limelight". He appreciates his fans, but wants his privacy too. This song was written long before the tragedy that Neil suffered in 1997-1998 with the deaths of his daughter and wife. That's why when Rush began promoting Vapor Trails in 2002, the band agreed that only Alex and Geddy would face the media - to protect Neil.

Rush – Distant Early Warning Lyrics 16 years ago
tommythecat42 - EXCELLENT synopsis! BTW - Geddy Lee has said that he only through in the name Absalom at the end only because "it sounded cool and it fit". LOL

Anyways....

I used to wonder what the meaning of this song was. That is until I dug into it a bit more. But first I’d like to point out Rush’s tendency to write intelligent, social commentary within their songs (i.e The Manhatten Project).

Excerpt from http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Distant+Early+Warn ing

“The Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) was a system of radar stations in the Canadian high Arctic with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska and on the Greenland ice pack and in Iceland. It was set up to detect incoming Soviet bombers and missiles during the Cold War a task for which it quickly became outdated with the move to ICBMs as the main delivery system for nuclear weapons. Controversy developed between the United States and Canada over the cleanup of the DEW Line sites, however. The stations had produced large amounts of waste that had been abandoned in the high Arctic. Especially damaging were the large quantities of PCBs. The United States insisted that it was Canada's responsibility to pay the hundred of millions in dollars of necessary cleanup, the Canadian government disagreed. In 1996 an agreement was reached that saw the Americans contribute $100 million to the estimated $300 million cleanup effort.”

The verse which says “I see the tip of the iceberg and I worry about you” makes much more sense to me now. I suppose from one of the DEW stations you probably could see icebergs, and still be worried about incoming Nukes. And the verse that says “no swimming in the heavy water no singing in the acid rain may very well be a reference to the PCB’s the article cites were left behind at the DEW stations.

Rush – Red Sector A Lyrics 16 years ago
From "How the Holocaust rocked Rush front man Geddy Lee", Jewish News Weekly, June 25, 2004:

"The seeds for the song were planted nearly 60 years ago in April 1945 when British soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. Lee’s mother, Manya (now Mary) Rubenstein, was among the survivors. (His father, Morris Weinrib, was liberated from Dachau a few weeks later.) The whole album “Grace Under Pressure,” says Lee, who was born Gary Lee Weinrib, “is about being on the brink and having the courage and strength to survive.”
Though “Red Sector A,” like much of the album from which it comes, is set in a bleak, apocalyptic future, what Lee calls “the psychology” of the song comes directly from a story his mother told him about the day she was liberated.

“I once asked my mother her first thoughts upon being liberated,” Lee says during a phone conversation. “She didn’t believe [liberation] was possible. She didn’t believe that if there was a society outside the camp how they could allow this to exist, so she believed society was done in.”

In a 1984 interview Neil Peart describes writing Red Sector A:

"I read a first person account of someone who had survived the whole system of trains and work camps and Bergen-Belsen and all of that (...) through first person accounts from other people who came out at the end of it, always glad to be alive, which again was the essence of grace, grace under pressure is that through all of it, these people never gave up the strong will to survive, through the utmost horror, and total physical privations of all kinds."
...I wanted to take a little bit out of being specific and, and just describe the circumstances and try to look at the way people responded to it, and another really important and to me really moving image that I got from a lot of these accounts was that at the end of it, these people of course had been totally isolated from the rest of the world, from their families, from any news at all, and they, in cases that I read, believed that they were the last people surviving.."

Rush – Subdivisions Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm inclined to think that it's more about teens trying to breakaway from suburbia (and thier upper-middle class parents telling them HOW to think/beleive/be), only for some to discover (as Peart writes) "...Some will sell their dreams for small desires - Or lose the race to rats - Get caught in ticking traps "

Afterwards these suburb-raised, city-stressed folk "...start to dream of somewhere - To relax their restless flight - Somewhere out of a memory - Of lighted streets on quiet nights... "

I think it's more of a commentary on the seduction of city life and the potential trappings it brings. It is also a social commentary on how cliques are hurtful, and how expectations of comformity often drive away our best and brightest.

Very much like the suburbs of Chicago.

Rush – Roll The Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
In ancient times the tossing of a dice was not just considered to be form of luck, the outcome was believed to be controlled by the gods and casting dice was a way of dividing ones inheritances, choosing the rulers and as a method of predicting events. The Roman goddess, Fortuna, the daughter of Zeus (known to gamblers as Lady Luck), was believed to determine the outcome of the throw.
Before standard cubical dice became the common for dice, ancient peoples would use fruit pits, stones, pairs of flat sticks, sea shells, nut shells and pebbles to get the random results for games. These customs were probably adopted from witch doctors and shaman who would toss them to gain insight and knowledge of the unknown and things to come. Fortune telling is still practiced with standard dice to this day.

Animal knucklebones were the next step in the evolution of dice. The Greeks and Romans used sheep anklebones as well as the more developed cubical spotted dice. The Romans called the four-sided anklebones Tali or Astaragali and the standard six-sided dice Tesserae. The Arab word for knucklebones is the same word they use for dice. Playing with dice is still known as "rolling the bones" to this day.

The song is all about "chance" being the frame for the things we "choose" (our Freewill).

While not the lyricist, Geddy Lee is of Jewish heritage. There are a few examples of "casting lots" in the Old Testament.

BTW- the whole "rapping skeleton" seen in the video (and the RTB concert i went to in 1991) is a bit cheesy and goofy. But come on guys! Remember , this is RUSH we're dealing with. They were always experimenting. Practicing what they "preached" so-to-speak. They take chances - even with thier music. That's the irony of the song. It's a shame so many Rush fans didn't get the joke.
