Neko Case – People Got A Lotta Nerve Lyrics

She has a bit of reputation for picking up fellas. So, maneater. That's what I think the song's about -- her being like "yea, I like to fuck, so what?". "And I craved, I ate hearts of sharks/I know you know it." That's pretty hot.
I never got the whole groupie thing until I saw Neko Case in concert. She is something else. |

Neko Case – The Needle Has Landed Lyrics

I think "the needle" is the needle on a record player. She's often sung about the connection between music and memory (Guided by Wire) and memory and loss (Star Witness, South Tacoma Way). Here, she's stuck in traffic, watching the planes fly low, and something happens to make her remember her past as a young girl in WA. Planes are also a trigger for memory (Maybe Sparrow) in her songs. When the "needle" lands on a record player, the song begins to play; here, her past, with its regrets ("if I knew then what's so obvious now, you'd still be here...") comes back. |

Shea -- I'd have to give the song another close listen, but "wander the west village..." sounds right. Have no idea about "plains" v. "flames"; but I never heard flames, myself.
But I do think it's "we wrote down"; I don't know if the next line "another vision of us" makes that much sense otherwise. I suppose it could be disconnected. But I think they are talking about writing something -- another vision of themselves, in the future, where they're together. But they're not writing it in a concrete way; they're writing it on "the walls of the day". Days don't have walls; their vision of the future is uncertain, fragile. |

I'm not even sure if this is still a debate, but I saw them last night and Dan sang it...in an amazing performance. And an amazing show. I would encourage anyone who is able to catch them on this tour. |

The New Pornographers – Challengers Lyrics

Hmm. You might be right, butterflykiss...but I think that might be taking the lyrics too literally. In the lines, "on the walls of the day/in the shade of the sun/we wrote down" indicates that they didn't write anything down, but that their time together lingers in memory. The "vision of us" that they were writing down was just a feeling, or a dream. If you take "when we clear the accounts" literally, it does suggest they're going to run away, but it could also mean that they should keep their memories alive until the time comes to forget each other. |

I think the title track, Challengers, might also be about New York, or at the very least placed in New York. It mentions the west village in plains. But that's a topic for another thread... |

Neko Case – Twist The Knife Lyrics

Maybe the song's about hopeless devotion; she's reflecting on what she's lost and given up to her love. there's a tone of deep regret, but also that she'd do it again. in any case, an underrated song of neko that i think ranks among her best. |
