To me this song speaks about one who is in search of Truth, of a deeper meaning, of the mystery of life. One who engulfs oneself in the trance of philosophical thoughts in search for these things: "Divine upper reaches Still holding on This ocean will not be grasped All for nothing" The Ocean being the depth of the thoughts and paradoxical/unanswerable questions where these thoughts lead. "All for nothing" since all this does is bring grief and never a satisfactory answer "Did you really want" to live your life this way P.S. Ignorance is bliss (well.. a mild form of happiness at least)!! |

Coincidently, I was completely infatuated with a woman named "Alex" when I heard this song for the first time. I was over at a friend's house and he told me to listen to this band called "Blonde Redhead" and he thought that maybe I'll like it because it's "different". So the first song he played for me was "In Particular" and as soon as I heard the initial beats, I immediately loved the song. Then the chorus came and I thought: 'Oh my God, is she saying 'Alex'??' and then BAM .. best song ever .. fit so perfectly with what I was feeling, it was insane. I also recently saw Blonde Redhead live in concert for the first time, and they played In Particular.. it was so very amazing. can't wait to see them live again |

First Off, Ben G. is one of the best and my fav. lyricists ever .. What B.G. is saying in this song is that there are all these very real, serious and traumatic problems going on in the world and he responds to it just like every other person in this world does: by "sleeping in" (or by ignoring it) such a great melody, deep bass, laced with gentle yet powerful lyrics...wow. .. B.G. you are my hero |

This song is about a "lonely" person, somebody who has (mentally) abandoned all the people around him/her and lives a life of (temporary) solitude..."Dr. Strangeluv"=he/she doesn't connect/love or allow himself/herself to connect/love on a personal level to anybody (yet) It is about somebody who has had the realization that most of the people around him/her are shallow, conformists ("looking everywhere, I see nothing but people...cold look in their eyes, cold air in their hearts") He/she used to think that he/she belonged with these people, that he/she needed these people in his/her life ("I always thought I could never leave them") These people are calling his/her name, they want him/her to be with them, to be apart of them, but they don't know that he/she can't keep up this fabrication for very long, when forced to at times (at work, "how are you's", proper etiquette,. etc.) ("They are calling me, but they don't know I can't stay all night long") He/she always thought that he/she could change them, could make them understand, could make them all see the greater and more deeper, unsuperficial side of life ("...I always thought I could save them all") In a 3rd person perpective, as well as he/she himself/herself, poses the question as to whether or not he/she is happy being this way: "Hey, Dr. Strangeluv so sad, isn't it true?" he/she keeps looking around for that perfect someone, or that someone who is like him/her.. best lyrics ever...so simple, yet so metaphorically deep on so many levels..love sia "I'm camouflaged by the timeline" The person that she adores is unaware of her and her feelings/she is hidden because they are both at different points in their lives (just like how the moon and the earth are on a different orbit/timeline around the sun) "I'm camouflaged when the sun shines" The person that she adores is unaware of her/she is hidden whenever that person is experiencing joyful moments (celebrating a birthday, at a party, laughing with friends, etc.) (just like when the sun shines on the earth, the moon is hidden. the happiness=when the sun is shining on the earth, there is life.. flowers bloom, plants grow, people absorb energy, etc.) "two ships passing in the night" "two lips pressing ground the tides" the only time that we are "together" or "connected" or "side-by-side" is in the night, when are thoughts transcend and we have similar thoughts. ie when we think of the deeper things in life, our goals, our past, our future, love itself, etc. and in these moments, it is like our phantom lips touch in this case the two people are represented by the two ships, two lone ships traveling through the sea (depth of the ocean and lone atmosphere rep. the deep introspective thoughts)(just like the moon and the sun watch two ships that pass each other in the ocean at night, the moon's gravitational pull creates the tides that sway and push the boats forward, it's almost like the moon is brushing against the earth's surface as its gravitational pull does this, hence "two lips pressing ground the tides") i may be putting more into this than what was intended by the writer but, these are my most fav. lines of the song and mean this much to me every time i hear it..it makes my heart cringe whenever i hear these lines sung, especially since sia has a ridiculously amazing voice;) |
