Lady GaGa – Monster Lyrics 14 years ago
I've just recently started listening to Lady Gaga, let alone loving her music, and when I heard this song I couldn't help but think it had something to do with sexual violence. I thought I'd be the only one, and I just wanted to say that I'm so glad I'm not.

Tori Amos – Father Lucifer Lyrics 14 years ago
I really, really, REALLY love the trumpet in this song. It really resonates with me, it has a nostalgic affect on me. It makes me think of a trumpet player doing a their solo, outside during winter, maybe around an outdoor mall at Christmastime, in the snow, but without the cold affecting the sound, no need for extra tuning... I was in marching band in high school. There were a few trumpet players in year/class who were (still are, of course) really skilled, and when they weren't goofing around they could definitely pull off a controlled, dynamic tone like in this song. Of course, not like the magic perfectly tuned trumpet in the imaginary scenario I described. Most of my best high school memories were band memories, and even though I played flute, the trumpet parts in this song just make me feel so... I have no idea what the exact word is, but I'll stick with nostalgic. I love the trumpet part at this part of the song:
"Heh. He says he reckons I'm a watercolor stain.
He says I run and then I run from him and then I run.
He didn't see me watching from the aeroplane.
He wiped a tear and then he threw away our appleseed."

It makes an already gorgeous song even prettier, for me. I love this song so much, and I just heard it for the first time yesterday.

Tori Amos – Professional Widow Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay, I've only been listening to Tori for a few years and I just got "Boys for Pele" yesterday, but I refuse to believe Tori would write a song as a shallow misogynistic dig at Courtney Love or Yoko Ono. I'm just so sick of "fans" blaming the wives of talented guitarists for ANYTHING THEY DON'T LIKE about his career. It's misogyny, plain and simple, and it's a real shame that Lennon and Cobain fans would do this considering that BOTH men were feminists, and it seems like a huge disservice to their memory. So, if this song is about Love or Ono, I'm sorry, but that just doesn't fit with Tori and I'd be incredibly disappointed. If Tori denies it, I'm taking her word for it.

Quick question: Is it "Contempt loves the silence" or "Content loves the silence"?

Okay, it's been over a year, but I need to say it:

That is one awesome anthropology assignment. Did the teacher/instructor/professor assign that, or did you choose it? How did it go?

Paramore – Ignorance Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm currently listening to this song for the second time ever, and I've never had much exposure to Paramore (this is actually my sister's CD), but God, after just listening to it once it hit home. It sounds so much like that childhood acquaintance of mine who I bumped into a few years ago in a grocery store, and he just stood by as his friend sexually assaulted me. Every time I have approached this acquaintance about it, he says he wasn't there, that it must have been someone who looked just like him. He even lied to the police, and they just swallowed up his bullshit, even though his alibi was never consistent each time he gave one. "Ignorance is your new best friend," indeed. And if I continued to ask him about it, the school's student resource officer said that HE could charge me with harassment. I could get charged with harassment for just trying to find out who molested me for some piece of mind.

And sometimes, the worst part of his involvement? His lies have made me question my own sanity more than once.

"The same tricks that, that once fooled me
They won't get you anywhere
I'm not the same kid from your memory
Well, now I can fend for myself"
-Awesome, empowering lyrics right here.

The Dresden Dolls – Slide Lyrics 14 years ago
Going with the abuse theory...
"who are you blaming?
they're just playing!
that's a good one...
who left the playground
a good decade before the bell rang?"

When I first heard this, it made me think of victim blame and denial. Especially "Who left the playground" sounds like, I don't know... I guess others placing the blame on her, because it's kind of expected that kids know not to talk to strangers. I don't know, it's 3AM...

Pink – So What Lyrics 15 years ago
I'll just say this: I can't help but think of Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica when I hear this song. So even if I didn't like this song, hearing would make me smile because it makes me think of Kara Thrace slamming her shot glass on a table, cigar in her mouth, punching some guy's lights out.

I love this song so much. Especially that last part about the "kind of beauty that moves." I see that line as, basically, in a picture, you're not doing anything. She needs to be doing something. Like her actions defining who she is. Gah, I suck at explaining things.

Once in my Japanese class during independent work time, I was listening to this song on my iPod and my teacher walked by and saw I was listening to Ani. Turns out he's a fan, too. He said he's never had a student that even knew who she is.

All I want to say at the moment is, this song was used so incredibly well on Battlstar Galactica. They could have totally blown it, using a popular Earth song to "turn on" the newly discovered Cylons, but man, they pulled it off. And the version by Bear McCreary and Bt4 they composed for the show is amazing.

Evanescence – My Last Breath Lyrics 16 years ago
"I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree"

My favorite part of the song. I never thought of it as a cemetary and coffin. I always imagined a beautiful, almost mystical, snow covered forest. After she dies, her spirit "lives" (couldn't think of a better term) and plays in the forest, inhabitting an somewhat hollowed out tree. Heh, I'm much happier with that definition. :)

Evanescence – Sweet Sacrifice Lyrics 16 years ago
Definately my favorite song on the new album.

For some reason, I tend to think of Alice('s Adventures) in Wonderland when I hear this song. I have no idea why, but I think it would make one awesome fanvideo.

It also fits the Batman-Joker relationship very well. (I never would have thought of that if now for an awesome Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker fanvid.)

D'oh! I forgot to add something. It's probably not worth posting again, but I've been itching to say this. Anyone ever seen "School of Rock"? You know that song they played for Battle of the Bands? The begining always makes me think of this song.

Though I know this wasn't what they had in mind, but I tend to think of Vietnam, Johnson, and Nixon when I hear this song. I noticed the similarities when we were learning about Vietnam and Watergate in Social Studies this year. (The fact that my teacher this year is HUGE Who fan and has a poster in his classroom probably helped me make the connection.)

To sum it up very simply: Kind of how after Johnson lied so much while in office, people were hoping that Nixon would get us out of Vietnam and be more honest, but then Watergate came along and more disillusionment knocked us on our heads. ("Meet the new boss/Same as the old boss.") And, of course, the revolution in this song makes me think of the cultural revolution and anti-war movement that occured during this time.

Yeah, probably doesn't fit completely, but I haven't analyzed the song word for word. It's just what the song sort of reminds me of.

Oh! Someone mentioned the French Revolution as an example. I like that idea. Especially with Napolean becoming emporer and stuff.

Nickelback – Just For Lyrics 17 years ago
How I see it, it's about a guy who just learned about some sort of abuse (probably sexual) that a woman in his life (could be a girlfriend, friend, sister, mother, daughter, etc.) experienced, and now wants revenge on the man responsible.

This makes me think of what could have been going through my dad's mind when my mom told him about something that happened to me the day before. According to my mom, he said he would have hunted down the guy and killed him.

I love this song. I just absolutely adore song sung by men about violence against women.

Pink – Long Way To Happy Lyrics 17 years ago
Yup, definately about rape or some form of sexual abuse. I seriously doubt the "One night to you lasted six weeks to me" line was about pregnancy at all. It sounds more like that's how long it felt like it was to her. Another reason I don't think it was about pregnancy is that I always imagined the girl in this to have been younger than 10-years-old when it happened, and most likely her period hadn't even started. One more thing I feel like adding, that I don't know if anyone has mentioned yet, but the song itself seems to take place years--maybe 10, 15, or even 20--after the abuse. Also, the "But don't worry about regret or guilt cause I never knew your name" part implies that this was done by a stranger, rather than a family member/friend. Just felt like pointing that out.

Personally, I think the song is pretty straightforward. It sounds like she's singing of personal experience, not metaphors. But that's just me.

That line about the Greyhound bus... Wow... The same thing happened to someone I know. I'm never going on a Greyhound bus...

Meg & Dia – Getaways Turned Holidays Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me think of war. Specifically a war during the "Age of Disillusionment", like Vietnam or even Iraq. The chorus definately sounds like it:

"As for the dying
And the fading
And resolve to be
Okay with the natural decay
I'll choose illusion
And safety a hundred times over
I'm prepared to be happy and deceived
I'm supposed to be happy and deceived"

I know that this isn't it, but it makes me think of Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. At least the Disney version. Esmeralda from his point of view. That's what popped into my mind when I looked at the lyrics.

Yes, I loved that movie when I was little, and I love it now. I love Victor Hugo novel-based musicals. And once I get done reading Through the Looking Glass, I'll read the novel. :)

I haven't heard this song, but I love the lyrics. It makes me so happy to see that some people don't believe the lies Rush and Bill spread about feminism. The title is awesome.
