The song is about people who use drugs and/or alchohol to escape their problems. To me, Middletown is just a metaphor for being drunk or high (you're neither here nor there, you're somewhere in between ie Middletown). It's all summed up by: "It's understood, by every single person who'd be elsewhere if they could. So far so good, and life's not unpleasant, in their little neighborhood." They dream in Middletown. |

Since nobody has commented on this song or part of the song I'll be the first. This is a fictional song about the different parts of the brain each wanting to control the fate of man. Apollo was a greek philosipher who felt that man's best attribute was his intelligence so Apollo is a metaphor for that part of the brain or the cognitive side. Dionysis was a greek philosipher who felt that mans best attribute was love and compassion so Dionysis is a metophor for the love and emotion side of the brain. The people were confused because they were only dealing with each half at a time. There was a battle of the heart and mind and out of it came Cygnus who showed Apollo and Dionysis how to work together as a team with each having different roles and working together so that man would be complete.
This song is truly amazing and the creativity of the lyrics is second to none. Rush is the best band EVER! Neil: amazing lyricist and in my opinion the best drummer ever. Geddy, awesome talent and one of the, if not best bass guitarists ever, and finally Alex who is a top 5 lead guitarist. Together they are amazing. It's a damn shame they aren't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I truely beleive that one day they will be. |

This song refers to alcholism and Middle Town Dreams is a metaphor for being drunk (You're neither here nor there, you're somewhere in between, in middletown) The song relates to how people deal with their problems with alchohol "Dream transport desires, drive you when your down" The ending is a perfect: "It's understood, by every single person who'd be elswhere if they could, so far so good, and life's not unpleasant in their little neighborhood. They dream in middletown." People escape their problems with alchohol and life gets better, at least temporarily. |

It seems to me that this is a ficticious song about two sperms: Strangers by one chromosome, slave to the hormone, body and soul, swimming in a primative sea, we must dive below the surface a world of RED neon, Sex is not a competitionm (as one Y chromosome sperm says to the X chromosome sperm) and last but not least, Reaching for the alien shore I beleive refers to the womans EGG. Very strange interpretation but Neil does have a very complex imagination. Re-read the lyrics and you'll see my point |
