La Dispute – The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit Lyrics 12 years ago
It's a song about the way so many young adults enter into casual sexual relationships. The narrator wants to do the same, but he can't bring himself to. He can see the beauty in the momentary connection, saying "It's like medicine. It's self discovery" but he also sees that the connections are temporary and he can't handle watching people leave, even if he only cared about them for a single night.

The root of this fear is that he's been left before. There's a past love he can't get over. The line "Was it integrity that kept my hands to myself or just the thought of getting too far ahead of you?" might indicate that he still keeps a vain hope that they might get back together one day.

As the song ends he wonders if he's been placing too much value on his past relationship. Maybe it wasn't as good as he remembers it. Maybe it was no more complex than the fleeting relationships he's been avoiding. He ends proclaiming that temporary love is better than no love. He asks us to open ourselves up to love so that we might eventually find "a body that makes sense" or in other words, our true love

Kid Cudi – Don't Play This Song (feat. Mary J. Blige) Lyrics 13 years ago
Definitely agree with shineondono. The song's about how he only feels good when he's high. Early in the song he thinks that just shows how drugs are great because they make him feel good. But then he realizes the only reason he feels like shit when he's sober is because of his addiction.

He says "Please don't play this song" because he doesn't want you to see his depressed side. He wants to put on a false front and let everyone think he's happy.

It's not a song against drugs. It's just saying you gotta use in moderation. Like he says in Scott Mescudi Vs. The World, you gotta be "Gentle with the drugs. Heavy with the love."

I'll edit the correct lyrics in as soon as my pre-order arrives.

La Dispute – Such Small Hands Lyrics 14 years ago
The letting people down and the alcohol are two different people. She let him down because her body couldn't keep a promise. To me that suggests she cheated on him which would go along with the rest of the album.

She cheated on him and left him. But he still loves her. He dreams that she'll return and start to make things right.

Hearing the door open symbolizes somebody entering his life. But he only ever has people leave him. He begins to feel angry and wishes that the airplane she left on had crashed (A line that links this song to Andria and Fairmount).

Finally he turns to alcohol to solve his problems. It makes him better able to deal with his fear of the past. But it doesn't last long and soon the ghosts of the past come back to haunt him once again. He also asks her to please stay away because her returning will only make his problems worse.

La Dispute – Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is based on "three" from Hear, Hear which is a cover of Annabel Lee by Poe. Cover's the best word I can think to use because they change a lot of the words around but it's clearly still the same poem.

I would say you're right about this song being an homage. The original poem seems to be about the impermanence of things and how that stops us from ever being truly happy while this song is about fear and jealousy ruining a relationship.

La Dispute – Then Again, Maybe You Were Right Lyrics 14 years ago
The entire album is connected. A lot of it is hidden in metaphor but it's an album about a man whose wife leaves him for another man (who is also married). There are songs about how difficult that divorce is from both sides of the relationship. Then there are also songs about the man finding a new love. But he ruins his chance because he's not over his ex yet. From Last Blues for Bloody Knuckles to the end of the album the man is learning to accept his loss. When he does this he is able to be with the new love but by that point she's already moved on.

I think my favorite part is seeing the unfaithful couple's relationship slowly deteriorate as they begin to realize what they've done. It's very satisfying for anyone who's ever been cheated on.

La Dispute – Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again Lyrics 14 years ago
@hoedown94, yeah that's what the song says, but it's not the literal meaning. It's a metaphor. The guy is afraid of some bad event happening (probably just a generic fear of anything bad happening ever) and this girl comes along and helps him out. She makes him forget his fear and they fall in love. Whenever he has problems she helps him to get through them. But then the problem he's dealing with is their relationship. Eventually this problem becomes too much and she leaves him. Suddenly his fears have been realized and he doesn't have her to help him through it. The song ends with him stubbornly repeating that he'll get her back, but in reality he has as much chance of raising the dead.

Meatistic's corrections all sound correct except that I agree that it is "In youth I had an even keel" and "It's taken me this long to learn/Every day you dig for worms/And words that gather at every turn."

Brand New – Sink Lyrics 14 years ago
The album leaked. These lyrics are 90% correct.

I don't want to let you go
But it hurts my hands to hold the rope
I won't be such an easy mark
You're no (???)

And all the candles on the cake
All set fire to the gate
Turn the cannons towards the boat
Men were drowning in the moat
It was the end of all rowers oars

If you call then I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming, now
If you call then I'm coming to get you
You want to sink, so I'm gonna let you

All I want's some earth and seed
But only grow the things I need
But first I must find my way back
And you go laydown on the track

At first I had an even keel
But now I'm not sure what is real.
It's taken me this long to learn
That every dead is ate by worms
And once they're gone they don't return

If you call then I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming, now
If you call then I'm coming to get you
You want to sink, so I'm gonna let you
I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming to get you
You want to sink, so I'm gonna let you
Then the fire snuck into your bedroom
Now my father sleeps to forget you

How darkly the dark hand met his end
He was withered and boney, exposed for a phoney
But we heed the last words that he penned
Hast to disgrace the traitor. Do not wait till later
I don't think that you've got to pretend
I see God in birds and Satan in long words
But I know what you need in a friend
So now when I leave you, I hope I won't see you

How darkly the dark hand met his end
He was withered and boney, exposed for a phoney
But we heed the last words that he penned
Hast to disgrace the traitor. Do not wait till later

If you call then I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming, now
If you call then I'm coming to get you
You want to sink, so I'm gonna let you
Well, I'm coming to get you
If you call then I'm coming, now
If you call then I'm coming to get you
You want to sink, so I'm gonna let you
Then the fire snuck into your bedroom
Now my father sleeps to forget you

Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer – So Scared Lyrics 14 years ago
She's dumping a guy she still likes. She knows it's going to kill him, but she needs to be free "from the collar you've got me by." She feels terrible about it, feels like she's screwing him over and burning her bridges but knows it's something she has to do.

It's not often you get to hear a song from this perspective of the breakup. It's even less common to hear one so good.

fun. – Walking the Dog Lyrics 14 years ago
An absolutely beautiful song. While I wish Nate would stop writing about this girl, it's nice to see that he's now writing about being over her. He's basically saying he still loves her, he won't let go of the memories they had, and life isn't as good as it was when they were together. But even with all that, he's ready to move on. Anybody who's ever lost a great love can relate to the feeling.

Hearts do break
and I must admit,
I got a better set of chords
so I might have been faking it.
Think I might have only cried just once.

This verse is crushingly beautiful

La Dispute – New Storms For Older Lovers Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is pretty straight forward. It's sung from the point of view of a man who is confronting the man his wife cheated on him with. The husband tells the other man that his wife still loves him and calls the other man a monster. Line by line, the husband loses confidence in what he's saying until he's almost chanting just to comfort himself. The other man has no reaction the entire time. Finally the husband begs the other man to say something. When the other man doesn't, the husband begins to leave. Finally the other man tells the husband what he's known all along. His wife no longer loves him. The love left without warning and there's no way to get it back. His wife now loves the other man and couldn't be happy with the husband ever again.

Manchester Orchestra – Pride Lyrics 15 years ago
To me this song is about addiction. The first verse is just after he got his fix and he feels good again but his pride won't let him admit he has a problem.
The second verse talks about him faking like he's alright so nobody suspects anything. "Me the king and the beast" Means the only people that know are him, God and the Devil. He knows God doesn't approve of his actions but he just says "Whatever, whatever"
The Third verse is him having to explain to his friends all the problems his addiction has caused him without admitting he's addicted. They realize he has a problem and cut him off.

The last few verses are what really drive the point home.
He uses a lot of things as metaphors for his addiction. The first one is sound. He mentions his habit and then says he's going to "bury it in the ground" meaning he's going to free himself from his addiction. He says it's killing him, but he needs more to "incubate the sound" or make him feel good. Broke head just means the fuzzy thinking that he gets from his addiction. The song ends by repeating the same lines about habits, the fact that it's killing him, how he's trying to stop, and how he's not doing a very good job because he still needs more

Like people are saying, it's fashion-conscious religion. The line makes sense that way. It's taking a stab at organized religions that claim to provide the one universal truth but then change their priorities over time.

Manchester Orchestra – The Only One Lyrics 15 years ago
Just because you have a bastard for a father doesn't mean you can't love him. I think that's what the "That knows the bastard too" line might mean. And the 100 dollars sounded to me like a housewarming gift. I think you would expect something a little more personal from your parents than a $100 bill. So I think the line means he's not very close to his dad because they have big differences and don't get along but he still cares about him. And the fact that that seems so odd is why he says he the only one he knows who does that.

Bayside – Don't Call Me Peanut Lyrics 15 years ago
This song's definitely about a girl cheating on a guy and he can't leave her even though he knows exactly what's going on. This whole album is like a soundtrack for anybody who's been cheated on by somebody they loved and trusted. The feelings of betrayal, loss, confusion, and anger are all represented so beautifully in every song. My relationship recently ended like this and this album is really helping me to get through it. I'm not in quite the same situation because my girl broke up with me, but I know that if she were willing, I would return to her in an instant even knowing what she's done to me.

Rise Against – Ready To Fall Lyrics 16 years ago
To me this song is about making a commitment to something that you know is right but you know also might mean making sacrifices. Judging be the video, that something might be animal rights, but it could really be anything.

The first verse is about him talking to his significant other and telling her that he needs to go fight for his cause even though she doesn’t want him to. She tells him he’s wasting his life and asks him to try and not loose everything he has in this fight.

The Pre-Chorus says that wings won’t save him. He can’t expect to get out of this fight unscathed. Somewhere along the line he knows he’s going to get hurt. But the next line says that heights don’t faze him. He doesn’t care that he’s going to get hurt because he believes in his cause. Then he says he’s going to take the step that might take him over the ledge. He has now committed himself to the cause and the pain that he believes will eventually go with it.

The Chorus talks about how he believes he’s going to step over the ledge (get hurt) at any moment but he doesn’t know exactly when that will be.

The second verse is a metaphor for his life before he made the commitment. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life and felt like he was wasting his life away (image won’t focus // a blur is all that’s seen). Then suddenly he finds this cause to fight for and everything makes sense (it all came clear to me). The cause becomes his “infallible reason to live all by itself.” He looks back at the life he used to love and realizes how he wasting his life away and does his best to separate himself from it (and then I ran like hell).

The bridge talks about the time after he’s left to fight for his cause. He talks about all the times he’s been sorry for making this decision and how he knows that his significant other believes that he doesn’t have any compassion anymore. He basically prays for her to not feel too bad about the whole thing and knows that there’s nothing he can do to help her feel better about it

Circa Survive – The Difference Between Medicine and Poison Is in the Dose (Album) Lyrics 17 years ago
Wanted to add a couple more things I've noticed. both the title and the repetition of "Move one inch at a time" suggest to me that he's not getting sick of performing, he just needs to slow down. He's done too much and he's getting sick of it. So he's gonna slow down and take things slow.

Also, the first three lines are:
"move one inch at a time
don't make shit rhyme
would it be easy to repeat the first line?"
This would seem to be saying that he could just get lazy if he wanted and start repeating a single line over and over to fill up space in the song. But what i think he's actually saying is that life might get easier if he uses the first line as a mantra. If he just keeps telling himself to "move one inch at a time" then everything will work out.

Oh, and i agree with MIripper99 that he wants to change who he is, not become a different person.

Circa Survive – The Difference Between Medicine and Poison Is in the Dose (Album) Lyrics 17 years ago
At face value, the song seems to be about Anthony's problems in his life. I'm not sure if there might be a deeper meaning, but this is my interpretation after a couple listens:
He has a tendancy to turn his problems into songs instead of telling somebody and getting help (don't talk about it, write it down, but don't ask for help).
The line "my mind's not a well, it won't run dry" hints that he has a lot of problems and that they won't be ending anytime soon, giving him an endless source of writing material.
when he says "accomplishments are transient" i think he's talking about his bands popularity and success. It doesn't matter how successfull he gets or how happy he makes his fans, he's not getting help for his problems so his life isn't going to get any better.
The line "did you ever wish you were somebody else?" kinda makes me wonder if he's getting tired of performing and wants to settle down. I sure hope not. This is a great song and i can't wait for the album!
