to me, it's about a guy who's been in and out of a relationship with this one girl (possibly with others on both sides in the meantime) and finally realising she's been the one for him all along. by the sounds they've remained friends though he's been messing things up a lot of the time and making her cry. he's tried to end it with her multiple times but for some reason, their paths keep crossing and he finds himself back with her anyway. while a beautiful song, it also seems a bit sad as it's taken him so long to figure out what she's known since the start.
or maybe that's just my wishful thinking. ;) |

even the music in this song is integral to the telling of the story. especially at the end, during the 'piece by piece' part. it sounds like a plane nosediving towards the ground from a great height, symbolising her "fall from grace", so to speak. she knows she's a darker-natured soul, and her begging for a "piece of Heaven" just sends her further and further down into her own personal Hell.. |

I know this feeling very well. when you turn a corner old traits and attitudes die and the people who knew you when you were the old you feel alienated and intimidated by this new you. they're dogging you and meanwhile, inside you're still learning what you want to think and feel and all the added pressure from everyone around you doesn't make you feel like you add up to much at all. if it were the other way around you know you'd be supportive and accepting of their life choices.
gee.. personal, much? anywho. it's a lonely place. you make a choice for yourself and you're so lost but pushing on because you know that something's got to give and it may as well be you doing the giving. |

in life you love, but sometimes you don't love properly. some people just don't know how. that's what I think is at the core of this song. knowing that there is something wrong with the way you connect to a person you could very well love, or at least mistakenly love. how easy it is to confuse all four of these emotions/actions for something you desperately want for yourself. it's what's expected. courtship, commitment, marriage, kids, family, belonging, etc. and when it doesn't happen that way (break down of the relationship with his daughter's mother through his own error, for example) it makes you question what you hold dear about love and the experiences you've gathered from them. ('and I wonder as I tear away my skin, it's taken me so long to stitch these wounds from where I've been').
when one's been hurt so often and built up against the idea of being vulnerable, it's hard to break it all down into something that you can offer another for very long, try as hard as you might. as badly as you might want it. you end up falling back into old patterns because it's what you know ('I surely slip away, through love, hate, sex and pain')
it's really a very sad song to me; Sully's basically admitting that maybe he's just not meant to have the 'dream' family he craves so deeply. ('it's hard to say that I'll be complete before I die'). that deep down he really doesn't trust what he thinks or feels what love is ('love-hate-sex-pain, its underestimated lies'). I hope he finds something real, though.. *sniffsniff* |

hi there LukeB, I think you're halfway there, mate. It's about a guy who's figured out his girl is cheating on him, but he's still in love with her... so he's gonna visit her at midnight and see if he can catch her out (hence the title of the song).
the first verse, they're... well, gettin' it on ;) and he's musing how the housemate in the front room must be feeling, etc etc. the second verse has him thinking about why she's so... different in the sack (your greedy new manoeuvres, they woke me in a fright) and now his head his is going crazy, so he's going to get some sort of closure, which is the bridge. then the last verse is his attempt at climbing the side gate to get in the back and falling, hurting himself badly enough to need an ambulance. I'm wondering if he was able to peer in her window via the gate and saw something he didn't quite like. the next part is like he thinks he's dying, but his injuries prolly aren't that bad. it's his heart that's hurting more than anything else (it's not enough to be in love with you, I want to be loved too).
this song always makes me laugh, but it's so sad at the same time. and Tim's damned good at that. funny lyrics to take the severity off a song. it's a wonderful skill and one of the many reasons I've been a fan for all these years. :) |

This has a definite Ben feel to it. A lot of his songs are based on dreams he has or stories that have just popped into his mind. I would say it's a forsaking of religion, or even St John's story as he may have told it.
There are two significant St. Johns in Catholicism. One is John the Baptist, and the other (most likely) is St John of God (Juan Ciudad) who after hearing a priest speak in his village had a revelation and a sudden insight into the Gospels; how different they were from those he had assumed up to that time. This profound religious experience led him to behave so radically that he was considered to be mad, and placed into an asylum. Not so bad these days, but we're talking the 1500s here!
Anywho, he spent about a year inside the institution, helping to improve the conditions of the other patients in any way that he could. From then onwards (the last ten years of his life) he devoted his time to caring for the sick and needy people in his village and established what has become known as 'the St John of God way of health care'. He was canonized a saint in 1690, declared patron of the sick and hospitals in 1886 by Pope Leo XIII and was named the Patron of Nurses by Pope Pius XI in 1930.
Also, here in Australia, we have the St John's Ambulance Service.

To me, this song has lots of parallels and interpretations, but it depends what angle you're coming from. Okay? So, here's my take:
Orchids, for starters, are representative of lust and sensuality in the Victorian language of flowers. The guy in the story (unless it's Corey himself) feels like the relationship he's in is toxic in some variety, that she's only with him to prove a point ('don't try to be the one person ho has stayed just to say they never left me'). Their attraction is animal ('You condescend to my primal brain and twist me around like a knife') and she undermines his personality and sense of self ('You keep me hidden behind the curtain, an audible human display'). She likes being the pinnacle of his attention at one turn and is depressive and gloomy ('don't ask me how I am because you're too busy planning your epitaph') at another. She's inconsistent and dodgy and doesn't have a clue what she wants at the best of times ('I live at arm's length and die a little between your constants by day').
For some reason, he can't seem to leave her. Perhaps he really does love her but knows that he'll do nothing but feed off her negativity and use it, because that's just who he is. It's what he does. Perhaps she's really not that good for him; keeps him under lock and key and gives nothing in return. Whatever the situation is he feels like less of a person ('I want my soul back before it's over')
But in the end it doesn't really matter because he wants to be with her ('I can't even wish you away').
Maybe. Possibly. Some of it. I dunno. I know her side though: she's me. This is my song and I'll always love it. This whole album, in fact. 'Choose' is another connected song.
Anyway... blah!

I know what this song means now. I was listening to the album after I had my son, and it all clicked. It's birth. It's the contractions his wife has at home, breathing with her, holding her hand while all the wile he just wants it to be over. It's the labour ward. It's the waiting and the futility through watching the pain his wife is in as she rides out the waves labour brings on. It's waiting for the baby to be born, the 'blessing in disguise'. It's the moment you get to hold your new little person in your hands for the very first time and locking eyes with each other ('searching everywhere, you're right there in my sight') and that instant recognition the baby shows you when you smile and speak to him/her.
Yes, it is painful and insurmountable at the time, and it must be even worse for the father-to-be, not able to do anything but watch as the woman you love is in such pain and discomfort and not be able to do anything about it. The relief that washes over you and that... love. That all-encompassing, filling, completing love. This is one of the most beautiful songs that he's ever released. Even as I sing it, I can't help but smile, and usually I have my son in my arms at the time. It's like a lullaby.

Uhthankyuh. Maroon 5 has an exceptional pianist that really knows how to accompany Adam's lyrics and in this song, to me, the piano is everything. It's dark, haunting, but with that sensual allure that you just can't help but think about riding someone! LOL!! Desired effect achieved!
