And "finally, it almost seemed authentic" as if that were the thing they were waiting for, and real authenticity was out of the question from the start.

Also, I think it's "shrink" every time. Not "shake." Shrink seems to make more sense -shrink into your pocket, shrink and disappear, shrink and be quiet as mice.

Ouch, Kanye.

Joanna Newsom – You and Me, Bess Lyrics 14 years ago
I think some of the lyrics might be wrong.

We picked our way
down to the beach,
watching the waves
dragging out of our reach:
tangling tails, like a sodden sheet;
dangling entrails
from the gut of the sea.

Hoarding our meals (alfalfa and rolls);
trying not to catch
the cold eyes of the gulls--
I hope Mother Nature has not
overheard!
(Though, she doles out hurt
like a puking bird.)

We stayed for the winter.
No-one told us
about the laws of the land.
I hold my own.
But you, with your hunger--
you, on the other hand--
make yourself known.

And when we were found,
I know we both grieved.
My heart made the sound of
snow falling from eaves.
You and me, Bess,
we were as thick as thieves.
So I swore, nonetheless, up and down,
it was only me.
They took me away,
and, after some time
studying my case,
must have made up their minds.
By the time you realized I was dying,
it must have been too late.
I believe you were not lying.

It is the day.
I wake,
with my ears cocked up like a gun
(like every day, of course),
yanked by my wrists
to the sugar-front courtyard--
now tell me, what have I done?
It seems I have stolen a horse.
I step to the gallows.

Who do you think you are--
arching your hooves like a crane,
in the shallow gutter
that lines the boulevards,
crowded with folks
who just stare as I hang?
It's all the same.
Kindness comes over me;
what was your name?
It makes no difference.
I'm glad that you came.
Forever, I'll listen to your glad neighing.

In any case, this might be my favorite song on the album, at the moment at least. I don't know what crime she and Bess have committed, though.

Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics 14 years ago
I always hear it as "Dumbstruck, with the sweetness of being, until we don't be." with the line ending there as opposed to it continuing to the following words. That's probably in part because of how she sings int, but also in part because of how I want to hear it. But I have no idea whether or not that's the right way to hear the lyrics.

I just noticed that one of my corrections has a typo in it
satin vines, not "sating"

submissions
Camp Lo – Luchini (this Is It) Lyrics 15 years ago
First, some errors:
"levitating jiggy in da shiggy's" should be "levitating jiggy in dashikis" (although I'm not sure how you can be jiggy in a dashiki, but whatever)
"boss of vega" should read "garcia vega" - a brand of cheap cigar used to roll blunts (like dutches)

I also think, although I'm a lot less sure about this, that "chessin this" should read "transcending." I don't konw what it means in context, but it sounds to me like that is what he says.

also, I'm similarly unsure about this: but it sounds like instead of "a happy time quest to the coast of key largo" he says "el capitan, quest..." as though it's an order to someone piloting a boat. Again, this isn't because it makes any more sense, but because that it what it sounds like he is saying

"at the monte barbie" could be "at the monte bar, we..." since from what I can tell, monte barbie isn't anything - but that's just a complete guess

"We float the tri-state drink in this satin vines" should read "we float the tri-state draped in these sating vines"

I'll try my best to help with the translation:
I think camp lo is best listened to when not trying to understand every line. I mean, how could you? It's riddled with so much slang that you would have to be them to konw what they are talking about all of the time. Instead, the entire feel of this song, and the whole album, is sort of a funk meets diamond thieves meets the high life. And the way they talk is often without any setup or introduction. They just throw you into a situation that they are describing... in words nobody can decipher

so, what I can decipher:
from the last line that I corrected, "vines" appears to refer to clothing. They float the tri-state in satin clothes, I guess (although maybe that's just a shorthand for "expensive")

most of the chorus is self-explanatory, but just in case nobody knows, sometimes people steam the cigar (the vega) before they empty out the tobacco... uh, when rolling a blunt, of course

car 54 is probably a reference to the old sitcom - a cop show. I suppose that's them running from the cops after one of their many diamond heists

"sippin'fountain root" is probably "fountain blue"... but "sippin'" makes no sense there, so it leads me to believe that is an incorrect word - although I can't make out an alternative... maybe "tippin'" or "sipped at" (although that would mean the line before isn't completely right either)
but I'm led to believe that because the surrounding parts are steeped in florida - key largo, spanish flying with the lady scarface, magic city. Fountain Blue would make sense in that context... that whatever they are talking about at that point in the song is taking place in florida. I guess Harlem isn't big time enough to spend your diamond money. of course that's jsut the first of their stops on the jet-setting tour (london, bora bora)

I don't know. This song is fucking awesome, but it is impossible to decipher. The lyrics are hard to distinguish, and when you do, the meaning still eludes. Although, I think the main problem is getting the lyrics right... which I can't do

Radiohead – Sit Down. Stand Up. (Snakes & Ladders.) Lyrics 15 years ago
"the raindrops" is, I think, a great flood reference. Whoever this 'we' is actually can and does wipe us out, perhaps... or at least is able to

The question is who the 'we'is

My initial reading of a lot of radiohead soungs is to connect it to modern capitalism, corporatism, or simply alienation. So mny instinct is to say that the 'we' is the corporate power structure, and their ability to make us obey their every command - even walk into the jaws of hell

I've always this and "sail to the moon" to be a pair - sail to the moon being the aftermath, perhaps a glimmer of hope

Jesus Christ Superstar – Heaven on Their Minds Lyrics 15 years ago
I wasn't brought up with Christianity, so I saw this musical long before I ever knew the way the acts of Judas are understood by many or most Christians. I was shocked to find out that Christians largely don't see Judas as a sympathetic character, the way I always had (since this musical was pretty much the main thing that informed my understanding of Judas).

Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ Lyrics 15 years ago
as for the "Great American novels" bit, I think she is referring to the frustration that can result from the pursuit of perfection. The "great American novel" is something of a goal or an ideal for every American novelist. The previous lines suggest that she has given up... that her "disaster" was derailed... and by the "master" of all things. It would seem that the frustrating pursuit of perfection has caused her to give up.

Consequently, there is a wail from the last great American novels... perhaps a wail of disappointment. I think she conflates the novels and the novelists a bit in the last line, but unlike her, those novelists did not give up in the pursuit of putting just the right words to paper. And that is to their undying credit (the novelists, I assume she means)

I wish I knew what "a little wicker beetle shell" meant. I think of it as being a chair of some sort... which would fit in well with a living room adventure - a chair turned caravel. But I don't know that that is what is meant, so I am hesitant to come to a conclusion... which is frustrating.

Neko Case – At Last Lyrics 15 years ago
this is, IMO, by a large margin, the best song on the album

I feel like there is quite a bit in this short little song

I agree with persimmon on the idea that she is simply saying that what she has poured her life into has been the people she has chosen as her "relation." But it's so simple and sweet that that is the expression of her life... as a person who who cannot explain a life. It is a chain of days, during which time she has been with the people she loved

And because of that she owns death (in the sense that her life has been what she wanted)... simple as she is

Neko Case – That Teenage Feeling Lyrics 15 years ago
the comfort that she finds in her friend's... naivete let's call it... only comes after she is jaded. After her heart is like weeds grown to outlive their season. only after she has time to laugh at her regrets which are so common in her mind

this song is so wistful that it's heartbreaking. It's as if she felt that she was on the cusp of something truly special that kind of slipped away... or rather, there were too many things (mental and emotional) in the way

Sweeney Todd – The Worst Pies In London Lyrics 16 years ago
the blank line that you have should read "but good? no"
also, I think the line is "men'd think it such a treat finding poor animals" as opposed to "trick."

That being said, this is the best song of the whole musical; Mrs. Lovett absolutely makes the whole thing and this is her best song. And I'm shocked that nobody has commented about this song yet

Sweeney Todd – My Friends Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite part about this song is that I think it presents what I think to be the central conflict for the first time. It's clear that all this time Todd has been thinking of revenge, while all this time Mrs. Lovett has been thinking of Todd. She makes such overt advances, but he is only concerned with his knives. Tragedy in the making

Sweeney Todd – Epiphany Lyrics 16 years ago
this is certainly the most revealing song. And I like they way that it's done. There is something of a schizophrenic manner in which he jumps from one corner of his mind to the next. There is the obvious homicidal snap that makes up te meat of this song. But then there is the hatred of the gentry (for obvious reasons), followed by lamentations concerning his daughter, more revenge (with a slight craziness to it - "nor a hundred can assuage me"). Then there is his sorrow over Lucy follwed by a directed revenge, then supplanted by the general homicidal tendency.

This song has all of his motivations bundled in a pseudo random presentation... and made even more seemingly random by the melody changes that accompany the topic changes

this song is really amazing

Sweeney Todd – By the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
alexial39: this, I think, is the central tragedy of this musical. It's also evident from the very beginning. In the song "My Friends" you get her singing lines like "silver's good enough for me" meanwhile he is still focused on his knives (and the revenge that they represent). It's clear that while she is obsessed with him, he will never be obsessed with anything other than revenge.

sad all around

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 16 years ago
Man, this song is hard to listen to without getting extremely emotional.
In any case, it seems to me to be a reflection about the difficulty in faith. That is, lots of you seem to believe that he is angry at God, but I don't think that rings true. He seems more to be speaking about the nature of believing in God; that is, it takes some reconciliation, given all of the sad things that happen. But he is certainly not mad. He is expressing the dual nature of God - the heart-wrenching and the glorious.

That being said (or with that in mind) my favorite lines are "And the complications when I see His face" and "All the glory when He took our place, but..."

I mean, don't those really just say it all?

Radiohead – Gagging Order Lyrics 16 years ago
I like the "homeless guy" angle, but I think the lyrics "a couple more for breakfreast; a little more for tea" belie this idea. That is, I think this is someone who has a slightly more regimented lifestyle than I would imagine a homeless person having (they eat breakfast at breakfast/at all, and they engage in tea at tea). And I think that the "just a body" bit is implying that he is something of a shell... lacking spirit, for lack of a better phrase

Death Cab for Cutie – For What Reason Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with most of what has been said here. The "ink remains" lyric seems like it's referring to his ability to write a song about her and/or what happened between them.

My take on "I will hold a candle up to you to singe your skin" is that he is going to illuminate her (her personality, her transgressions) and use the truth about her to burn her (something like a scathing rebuke of her personality). I think this would also fit in with his ability to write a song about her/what she did and the idea that that constitutes a kind of victory.

And I am quite possibly wrong about this, but I had always thought that the like was " brace yourself; I'm bent with bitterness AND can't forsee. This meant to me that he was so angry that he was going to lay into her without regard to the possible negative consequence of being so brutal to her.

and, austinagg, I think that yours is a pretty good interpretation of the chorus - I always had trouble making sense of it. Although, in that line of thought, I think that "absence follows" is referring to her and (perhaps) her distant behavior... and actual physical absence a lot of the time - thus it would be another clue that he should have picked up on

Weirdly, I saw a kid shot in Chicago, as well. It was really awful. I waited up to hear the news report, and it turned out that the shooter (it was a murder - the kid was shot in the back) was an off-duty police officer. The kid was black, and sadly, the cop got off scot-free. It was a similar thing, in that you could tell the sadness of the people around the kid by the memorials left where he was killed, but aside from that, it seemed like nobody gave a damn

really tragic
