I agree 100% Hammy...I read each comment and yours identifies with mine the most! This beautiful, deep song can mean something different to each of us, however in my case, it mirrors your interpretation. They choose to break away, yet, they STILL love the person, although they must break it off...and it hurts so deeply for one, and the other appears to have an easier time ending it, but, deep down the" secret" is that they STILL has deep feelings for the other person.. And they KNOW this! I am always puzzled and envious of how EASY it is for some people to brush me...or anyone off without missing a beat? haha It'smore complicated for me than that. |

This song means different things to different people depending on their life experiences--past and present. I have known suicidal people, and also the love relationship that can be so difficult to end. because I have been in the latter one, I relate these words to the difficulty in ending a long, close relationship. I also feel the song could be about the drug addict and the friend (whether parent, sibling, friend, or therapist who tries to "reason" with them). Anyone who knows a drug addict personally, can probably attest to the difficulty of trying to get them to realize their death trip, and how impossible it is to utter the "right words" to change the destructive path they're on. Essentially, this song means different things to different people and they all make sense! |

I heard this song when I was 17, and the part that no one mentioned is: "I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not."
For me the part where he "found something going on" means he probably caught his girlfriend cheating and he probably wanted to leave home in a fit of despair. Just think of being around age 18 or so, and how we sometimes acted quite drastically to broken relationships. We felt as if the world would surely end. His father is just trying to pass on some "words of wisdom" I believe. The father is also just trying to explain that his son that life will not always have a happy ending. |
