I feel like I truely heard this song for all it's worth tonight, in my own interpretation.
I feel like this song is kind of a cataclysm of the way this current generation thinks when you stick it to a stereotype - a bunch of dumb fucks only existent in the single moment who can spend an hour of their time easily flicking their thumbs prying into others lives or gathering "wisdom: through memes. Like self-centered pleasure is the only thing that truly defines a well lived life anymore despite the after effects proving otherwise. I write this as I get myself drunk but I listened to this song and almost cried because I feel like it totally captures the feel of the people I grow up with putting themselves through. Like every one of the stupid things we seem to do to feel good only serves to backfire on us but we try to work even harder to make solipsism work to our advantage.
Like on the surface yeah, living fast is the only truth but if life is so short why do we spend so much time trying to cope or correct the things that either we have done to ourselves or people have done to us? |

Basically some believe that white woman are enablers and supporters of the steriotypes black men are supposed to uphold whereas a real black woman is designed by nature to bring the black men as well as the black community up into a more cohesive unit in America, but that cannot be done if the black men are going falling into a submissive tail chasing role for the white woman/man/race.
So he's saying it's not cool that its happening but its slowly untying the very fragile bind in the black community and he can't really let it be out of sight out of mind. |

Its not even a relationship. The 'we' in the very beginning is a plural of myself. Everyone I meet is just a new face with a new way of letting me down. I don't think that Kanye is trying to diss the idea of going to college. From my own personal experience I'm in here trying to land the security, comfort, and option to be able to do something I love to do and be happy doing it because I don't see anyone in my family doing that. Also I think its pretty common for people to want to give up along the way in college. I'm friends with people ranging from freshman to super seniors and I see optimism in the folks who're just getting here and people in my status and beyond who feel lost and afraid they're wasting time in this.
From the material standpoint I know some people down the hall who went out and bought a shit load of nerf products just to have one day where they can shoot the shit out of each other with them. I don't even have $2.20 to do a load of laundry. I know that as soon as I get money I'm going to want to catch up to all the people who go out to Applebees and end up eating half the food on their plate and dip. I think that is a grossly over summarized story of the plight of blacks. So this song means a lot to me right now.
I wish Kanye could have stayed like this instead of going in the direction that he has. |

i dont know why or when it started but this became one of the most depressing songs i can think of. Its hard for me to listen to. Most of these songs are occcupied to things tied to Mr. Gibbard anyway.
I cant really listen to him anymore because he makes me want a cuddle buddy to enjoy the music with, but when I have one its like listening to premonitions of the fallout inevitable to come. He's a vicious cycle. He makes me crave love, and he's good when you find it, but when its over he makes me feel even more bitter about relationships than when I began only to want to be in love again all the more.
is there any death cab song about love being good with him or is it all we agem we break up, and we die.....? |

I first remember paying attention to this song the day before valentines day and the day after my girl friend broke up with me. It sort of encapsulated every essence of being in bed with her that night wishing I could make her fall back in love with me. I pulled every stunt I could think of to try and change her mind including public humiliation to make her smile to try to rouse any fond feeling from her. By then we were both near tears and we fell silent until this song came on and that did us both in. Much like a dream it marked one of the last times we'd ever feel intimacy with eachother again.
So in modern times I'm taken back to that memory and it's like a nightmare because Bens music is like tracing love from it's downfall and decay back to it's origins and everything between but since I focus on the bad parts it's hard to relate to him feeling alright with it because those are the memories that hinder the moving on proccess. Love almost seems hopeless with him because when he's happy it's still got that slight melencholic nostalgia somewhere. He almost makes me want to never love again.
This might be my 100th post by the way. I hope it is because this is a great song to have it on |

I don't know. I always a this song as a narration of the typical night out with friends or even the bullshit parties you go to where you go and have your little shinanigans (like rearranging ones furniture I suppose). Then maybe the part about someone being gone may be a person like a girlfriend, AND IM NOT A POTHEAD nor one to take a song and think it's about drugs, even if it is, but it could even be a dealer. Possibly even someone he specifically wanted to talk to but could only reach people who could be drunk themselves. Calling around suggests he called more than one person with some kind of searchfor something and in my experience in parties it's either drunk dialing or looking for more parties booze etc....

whats kinda messed up for me is that my ex directed me to this song after I told her I may be developing a crush on Katy Perry. she gave it to me because she loves the way Katy sings the lines and figured I would too, but little does she know is that this is exactly how I feel about her but I can't say in fear of losing her. Whenever she gets a boyfriend I get put in the backseat for a while but she still comes to me for non biased advice and I don't want to lose her completely because of a stupid attachment I cant get over.
and it sickens me that every fucking time I meet a girl she's automatically Venn diagrammed against her. I haven't been able to get over the fool and I know I probably never will.
and to throw the cherry on top of that she also told me about the sonic youth cover of the song superstar, and I do play guitar, so I'm wondering if she's trying to send me a cryptic message through music or if I'm just trying to feed myself delusions that she's secretly as in love with me as I am with her so I can feed the flames of thought that I may one day soon have a chance to be with her again. Its so disgusting.

Little (possibly) spontanious spur of the moment things like driving in reverse through the fog, talking a walk, and possibly speaking in tounges. to me this song incorporates alot of the different styles we hear in pop radio these days. The vocoder, the 'haters' that diss them, the crazy infectious beats, the repetition, the talking about nothing.... it's almost satirical or like a parody. Its like they made a list of things that make a hit record and this is what came out of that formula, yet it still has this original sound although its brought nothing new at all.
I HATE the BEP and I fuckin' jizzed when will i am died in the new x-men movie but this song will be on my list of favourite songs of all time. It displeases me but this song is too good to be true. I secretly scan the radio in search of it. |

I dunno. With this album there are definitely some reoccurring themes and subject matters, but thats what most of their records have been like. (at least KA and OK) I started to look for the theme of the album but I half assed and abandoned the idea because I lost the mp3 player I had it on and finished the journal I wrote the lyrics in so I never found it, but it's pretty relationshipal to me. |

I think the song is damn clever. I was miserably in the back seat of a friends car and she had the radio booming and this song came one and I felt that there was something a little mor emeaningful going on lyrically.
I think that its pretty cool that it hides a message behind a pop structure. I personally think that he had the chorus infectious purposly for the sake of getting stuck in your head, enlisted an "a-list" rapper because everything he touches seems to turn to gold :\ and put a nice little beat behind it to get people moving, boost his way up the charts, yet still have integral lyrics for anyone thats REALLY paying attention. I doubt if this was his intention but I'll pretend that it is. |

This song feels like how I do most of the time. Especially in high school. I would move around the crowded hallways between classes and whenever I got to a door I would never need to open it because there was always just enough room for me to squeeze through because of all the bodies.
