As Cities Burn – Bloodsucker Pt. 2 Lyrics 2 years ago
After listening to this song for the thousandth time—some 16 years later—on a super stoned night in June, I can’t help but realize that this song is essentially about succumbing to one’s will and expectations.

More specifically, in regards to the year 2021, it’s as if no one is capable of having their own opinion anymore… or “voice” (See music video).

If you express one opinion then you’re labeled “X”, and if you express a different opinion, then you’re labeled “Y”. There is no tolerance for different voices… you’re better off silenced.

And—per the lyrics & tone of the song—one senses anger, frustration, and sarcasm in regards to succumbing to societal expectations “the machine”.

“You can have it…”
“Turn me into…someone more like yourself”
“….I swear not to scream at my becoming part of the machine”

(Referring to the singer’s succumbing to society’s will to be silenced)

“Let it be known that this is what you get for falling out of line…no one wins against the machine, so get back in line”

(Referring to the idea that there is no beating the majority/society/“machine”, and that speaking out only brings more trouble)

“Are you the man now?”

(More a rhetorical question since the singer has been silenced by the end of the song: Is society truly better off this way? Well let’s hope so, because it’s too late now)

Kodaline – One Day Lyrics 7 years ago
So apparently the vocalist, Steve, said this whole album is about remaining positive in a demoralizing situation and always looking forward to something better ("grass is greener on the other side")... and it makes a lot of sense if you read the lyrics to this song with that message in mind... ex: "how are you still holding on?" to hope and optimism.

But to me, this song just screams "life is too short to always be worrying". A similar message, but instead of looking forward to a brighter future, just accepting the fragility of life and living in the moment... ex: "one day its here and then its gone". Life flies by, especially the older you get; it only gets faster. It can also end so suddenly and unexpectedly (heart attack, car accident, etc.)

I'm not a religious individual; my philosophy on life is that it should be lived to fullest and you should spend as much time enjoying humanity's pleasures and stresses (that's what makes us human), and enjoy as much time as you can with your loved ones while you're here... ex. "don't waste your time on your own".

Ultimately, no need to try and deceiver the meaning of life, why we're here, whats our purpose and whats the bigger picture... people ponder these things and wonder and worry til their very last day lying in their death bed...ex. "as your heart gets bigger... as your skin gets thicker... what's it all about?"... don't waste your time worrying about whats beyond this life, it'll be a life wasted. Instead, just enjoy the moment and everything this world has to offer you.

The Story So Far – Stiffled Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't know why, but for some reason this song makes me think of a young soldier stationed in the middle east who's struggling to get through his tour. He has been overseas for a while now and the distance from his lover/ex-lover, combined with the harsh living conditions, is starting to take a toll on his mental well-being: "Overseas while you're back west... restlessness..." he's often reassuring himself that everything will be fine if he just keeps his mind on his lover and their sex, of which he's much deprived of.

I love the frustration expressed in the verse: "so sore from sleeping on the floor... never see your face anymore..."; he's obviously referring to the harsh conditions and wants the lifestyle they had before he was deployed.

The distance/conditions is making him rude as of late, he loses sleep second-guessing what he's doing with his life as well as dwelling on what his lover may be doing back west (affairs). He admits he's holding her back by being overseas for so long: "I'm much too slow for the pace that you're moving..." she's eager to settle down with someone who can be around for her.

Though he's slowly suffocating (stifled) overseas, he refuses to complain/express the truth in his letters he writes to her. He makes it sound like everything's fine, tries to remain/appear strong when really he wants to say everything is not fine, the distance is fucking with his head (like a poison) and that he's lying.

Holiday Parade – Walking By Lyrics 11 years ago
I listen to A LOT of music, a bunch of different artists and genres, but according to my iTunes, this song is one of my top 5 most played songs. While I would be lying if I said I consider Holiday Parade as being one of the top 5 greatest bands of all time, I can say with certainty that Walking By is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. It's so underrated; it's definitely a radio-worthy song that deserves much more attention than it gets.

No matter how many times, EVERY time I hear the opening verses the same vivid images pop into my head: images of this girl I dated my junior year of college. We were crazy attracted to one another and spent many nights locked inside her room while her roommates would throw huge house parties downstairs. We hardly knew each other, but our intimacy just felt so right, so organic; no one understood it but us. And I can remember waking up early in the mornings and looking over at her as she slept naked cuddling up against me, she looked gorgeous and peaceful and I'd be so warm and comfortable under the covers... I REALLY didn't want to get out of bed but I had to get ready for class; I can remember thinking "d*** it, it's morning already!?"

We dated for a while and then we broke up shortly before I graduated and of course it was disheartening at the time, but I'd tell myself "It's all part of some master plan... it's gonna end up fine." Things happen for a reason; believe that everything goes according to plan, and until you get to the peak of the mountain, enjoy the wonderful views along the way up.

But the opening verse says it all: there is nothing more important in life than those moments described. The moments when you'd happily trade all your material possessions for the intangible, such as time. The moments when nothing else in the world matters other than what's happening at that moment. The moments when you couldn't be happier, you couldn't feel more alive, and/or you couldn't feel more loved.

Deftones – Change (In the House of Flies) Lyrics 11 years ago
Not really sure what or who the artist is referencing in the song, but he makes it very clear it's about change, and because of how dark the song is, change for the worse.

In my opinion, I think this song is more about the narrator than a victim of the narrator (whether it be a virgin girl or friend-turned-junky or whatever.) I think the narrator is suggesting he is changing into something less than human (a fly, something everyone despises, swats at and kills without remorse.) I think the narrator feels he is somewhat messed up in the head, twisted and sinister: in the verse that starts with "I took you home..." I imagine the narrator capturing a bug outside (like a fly or a beetle) taking it home, placing it on a petri dish ("set you on the glass") and using tweezers to pull its wings apart underneath a microscope. Which he finds humorous.

It's kind of a sickening image but it fits perfectly with the tone of the song. I love the eerie instrumental that plays after the verses "you were on fire" and "then I laughed".) Unlike a lot of other interpretations, I don't necessarily agree that the narrator feels guilty about what's happening. I think he's accepting it; it's thrilling, it makes him "feel so alive". Which is the scary part. He's messed up, and not only does he know it, but he's okay with it (maybe even likes it)... "so, hell, blow me away."

Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics 11 years ago
Beautiful thing about music (and art in general) is one's freedom of interpretation.

This song to me just wreaks sarcasm. I think the groom overhears the conversation (since he's nervously pacing) and obviously gets upset, "....you people...goddamn door?!". Which I interpret as "keep your thoughts to yourself". Truth is, whether we admit it or not, we tend to regard what others think of us. You tell yourself you could not care less about what someone else thinks, but if someone suggested something bad about something you valued, you would definitely (subconsciously) consider it. Is there any validity in their suggestion? Hearing someone suggest you're soon-to-be-wife is a whore is pretty daunting if you ask me.

He tries to make himself feel better, tells himself to be calm and not to overreact, that everything will work out: "....sense of poise and rationality", but you can tell it's eating at him inside. His frustration ultimately leads to the cancellation of the wedding, and again he tries to make himself feel better: "I'll look at it this way... technically our marriage is saved", because if he would've married a whore (suspected) they would've had a horrible marriage. So he's trying to look on the bright side of things, "this calls for a toast so pour the champagne." But is he genuinely happy with the situation? Even if he did prevent a miserable marriage? It just wreaks of sarcasm and dismay.

I think this song says a lot about the powerful influence of others (society), especially when it regards something one takes to heart.

Balance Problems – A Hard Look At the Facts Lyrics 11 years ago
"News" makes sense too. She broke the news about them breaking up, but she can't change how he feels about her- how hard he "fell" in love with her.

Anberlin – (The Symphony Of) Blase Lyrics 11 years ago
Both the words "thirst" and "substance" have several different meanings. "Substance" can also refer to matter; think "substantially". Perhaps the narrator is suggesting his relationship is lacking substance. Thus he desires (thirst) a more meaningful relationship, one that does not feel so "blasé".

Considering my girlfriend recently broke it off with me for the same reason, I can easily relate to this interpretation. The narrator feels bad about the way he feels: "thirst for substance somehow isn't right," "it's killing me inside," but he also feels bad about further leading her on: "I don't wanna be by your side, if something isn't right." Even though he is unfulfilled with his relationship, it is obvious he cares a lot about his significant other: "please take these feelings for her inside," she probably treats him very well. But he is determined to end it soon: "this is our last goodnight," and preparing for it is killing him: "my chest hurts when I breathe tonight." He knows she has a right to be upset with him and thus will respect what she has to say: "say what you will, say all that you can." I even feel like the lyrics "because your heart seems so cold tonight", and "how could you watch innocence forgone," are directed to himself.

But that is just my interpretation. Alcohol/drug abuse makes sense too.
