My Morning Jacket – Knot Comes Loose Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that you and Shap essentially have it right, but with a bit of a twist. I think he has found a new love and he is finally comfortable enough with this person to let his guard down and really show her his heart and who he really is. A lot of people that have been hurt in the past will refuse to show all of themselves or will, as the song says, hide a part of themselves. However, when they find that someone and they begin to trust them and really love them even the lock (or knot) on their heart is broken and they are able to show that person all of themselves and truly be themselves. All of his life he has been waiting for someone to be able to share all of himself with, and he has always had hot heels, meaning that he has always ran from others and had short relationships because they weren't the one. I think the brand new is not that he is a new person, but that the brand new is something no one has really seen from him it is new to the world because this one person brought it out of him. He will always love and remember the person for that and will do his best to love them and not let them down. Very pretty song. Simple, but effective.

Okay... what is the name of this song? iTunes and the MMJ website has it listed as: "Death Is My Sleezy Pay". Is that right or is it "Death Is the Easy Way"? I always thought it was the later until I noticed it on iTunes. Anyone have any idea?

My Morning Jacket – Death Is the Easy Way Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it could actually be a depressing song...

Its as if he can't get the girl. She comes over and is friends with him, but nothing more. Still, he loves her and nothing compares to the love he has. Nothing can really fulfill him but her, but he can't have her. He knows can't get her and death seems easier than having to live without her.

Just kinda a different take...

To me it sounds like he is saying, "He don't know, know. Now he don't know." Pretty much over and over. Something like that anyway.

My Morning Jacket – Librarian Lyrics 16 years ago
The mirror is a good/bad thing. The librarian doesn't realize that she is beautiful and sexy. The mirror has not corrupted her. If you ask most guys they will tell you that this is the type of girl they find to be the sexiest. The type that isn't corrupted by her looks in any form or fashion. She is just naturally beautiful.

Also, this song is basically pure poetry. He describes an entire love scene, yet never truly describes the librarian. The listener can practically walk with the singer and see and feel what he does. The scene is painted perfectly for you in your mind's eye. Yet the librarian is left up to the listener. She has the stereotypical glasses and pencil in hair hair, but what the girl looks like... totally up to the listener. It allows you put fall in love with your own librarian. Then the song goes deeper by explaining that its not about the beauty she has outwardly, but her entire beauty.

Pure poetry... its amazing.

My Morning Jacket – Smokin' from Shootin' Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrics for this are not all inclusive... here is the rest:

who makes my decisions? who reads all your thoughts?
what makes us how we are?
faith can't prove what science won't resolve
kumbaya my lord, c'mon row your boat ashore
the river's long. it is cold. it chills the body but not the soul.

do you see my smokin' guns?
they're smokin' from shootin'. smokin' from shootin'
smokin' from shooting at nothing dear.
do you live your life on the run?
losing out on lovin
asking for nothing
running from something that isn't there

distance- coming or going? c'mon
what are you waiting for?
distance- growing or closing in on?
anyway?

Steve Earle – Copperhead Road Lyrics 16 years ago
I am from the area this is about... I will help you guys out on the translation...

First off... Pruitis:

His daddy bought the big black dodge at an auction from the Masons. That is right. Johnson County sherriff painted one the side, it was an old cop car, but they break down the engine and soup it up to make it faster than cop cars. BTW: Johnson County is Johnson County, Tennessee where there actually is a Copperhead Road.

Also... the car did not catch on fire near copperhead road, but instead when he was on the way to Knoxville. He was probably ran off the road by a cop. So, since the sherrif knows about it he tells the singer's mother that the father is dead. The Sherriff then goes up Copperhead Road and burns all the whiskey. They either pour out whiskey when they find it or burn it.

DirkaDirka:

In the first verse the grandfather is killed, not the revenue man. That is part of the theme... everyone dies doing it, but the John Lee III has some tricks.

No, he didn't take out the helicopter. In Vietnam the VietMihn were famous for small hidden traps all over. So in order to destroy John Lee's pot they have to land and go destroy it. He is essentially saying that you better stay away because he has the place rigged up with traps.

Counting Crows – Sundays Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds to me like it is a song about a girl leaving him. She claims that she can live without him, but he realizes that he can't live without her. Even though he didn't have a sexual relationship with her he didn't need it, he was in love. She left or threatened to and said walking away would be easy. He knows that his 'moon will explode' without her. I think "I don't believe in Sundays" is a way of saying the he won't make it to the end of the week without her. Not believing in anything make be him admitting that love doesn't exist.

Just a thought...

Maybe the song is about Adam's unwillingness to write and tour. It sounds like he locks his room and leaves, but maybe he really locks himself in his room and stays... his mind leaves. In his mind he goes all over searching for love and answers. I think at the end he finds the answers he is looking for.

My Morning Jacket – I Will Sing You Songs Lyrics 16 years ago
"Stories of the greater years...
Fill your heart and soul with tears"

Is it actually the word tears and not the word beer. I have seen it written both ways. Beer doesn't make too much sense (unless you use the beer to drown your past). Fear works, but I haven't seen that used by any lyrics places. Most the lyrics places I have seen have it written beer and then tears is written in parenthesis. Anyone got any insight on this at all?

Counting Crows – When I Dream of Michelangelo Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe it is a song about obsession. There is a girl he really doesn't like, but for some reason she is just in love with him. She thinks he has all the mystery of beauty of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel painting. Yet she is on his skin (or she annoys him). Still, the more she obsesses over him the more he realizes maybe he just doesn't want to like her because of that. I think in the end he realizes that he does in deed like her as well (she is on his mind).

Teebs... last time I checked there was racism WELL before 1492. Check out when the Europeans went into Africa/India/etc. Slaves existed during (and before) the Roman Empire. America has never had a monopoly on racism.

My Morning Jacket – Hopefully Lyrics 16 years ago
Also, this is kinda a dark love song. I think it is about one of those break up conversations. Let me explain:

The first verse:
I wont ask you where you're goin.
I wont ask you where you been.
I know after a million times you get sick of all my lines,
but I just wanna see you safe again.

To me is the singer being paranoid that his girl is cheating on him. She is always somewhere else and he has asked plenty of times where she was, but this time he doesn't even bother.

The 2nd verse:
I know that just now I aint been showin,
the kind of love you know that I can.
So gimmie a little time and you'll be knowin your good lovin
baby is back on top again.

Is the singer saying he still loves the girl and that he hasn't shown her enough affection and love. He hasn't done his best.

Next the chorus (if u can call it that really):

Hopefully it occurs to me that there's one thing I cant stand.
That's the thought of a single day, without your head in my hand.

This is a desperate show of all the love that you can muster. Its pure poetry.

Last verse:

I always hoped you'd be showin,
and now you've shown as much as you can.
But after each time im still glowin
with a good lovin smile that's yours until the end.

I think this is essentially where the fight ends and they actually make up. She does show her love for him (as much as she can) and it makes him beam.

So its kinda an on again off again type of love song. Very pretty.

You usually have someone's head in your hand(s) when you kiss them. Usually right around the ear. So that might be what he means. Very sweet way to put it.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Southern Cross Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems more simple to me. Or maybe I am just simple minded...

To me its about a sailor who leaves his love behind because their love never seems to work. The last verse seems to suggest that. Something always happens. Still, every time he sees the Southern Cross for the first time he thinks of her. He has searched the world over but found no one to replace her. So all he has left is 'music' which is, I think, simply literal. A lot of people fall back on music, either playing or listening, when they are down on their luck in the love department.

I think even the sailor realizes that he cannot get the girl, no matter what he does. I think this because Avalon is not a real place. Its a mystical island of Arthurian lore. So I think he just dreams that he is calling her. That might also explain the reference to the midnight hour and her running away. He is asleep at the midnight hour and she goes away when he wakes up from the dream.

I also think that he knows that he can't have her but she still has his heart. Despite that he is looking and he is trying to present himself as best he can. I think that is what it means by 'flags are flying', meaning that he is still trying to attract someone, but in all honesty he admits to himself that literal music is the only love he really has.

My Morning Jacket – Into the Woods Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with you NightNeverSleeps... most of the song sounds like a relationship gone bad. So many relationships turn sour after sex, especially when ur younger. The second stanza sounds like he/she is bitter about putting everything into the relationship and getting nothing out. "Here comes the spoon" might just be a way of saying the significant other is spoiled (born with a silver spoon in her/his mouth).

I don't understand the riddle part and how it fits in... anyone have any ideas?

The last part just seems to say that masturbation is best. Then the guy/girl really owns up and says that you have to keep trying to find love.

To me it is talking about life. Life is a road, there is a lot of light and hope ahead of you. You grow up and get older and the world gets smaller. You aren't alone anymore, but for some reason things just seem more bleak and depressing.
The middle of the song he realizes that everyone was right when they said life was hell, life is a prison, even though before he wouldn't admit it.
Suddenly he finds something to brighten his life again, a person. His world is lit up anew because of love.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole – Somewhere Over The Rainbow Lyrics 17 years ago
Just my own little take on this, might be a bit off, but whatever. I kinda see it as the grass is greener kind of a thing. Wanting what you can't have. In the beginning the singer is on Earth and they dream of Heaven and how great it will be. He dreamed of leaving Earth for a better place. Once they get to Heaven the singer realizes that Earth was also a great place. He looks down from Heaven and sees the beauty of the World and wonders why he wanted to leave so badly.

I'm not trying to say that the singer sees Earth as the greener side when he is in Heaven. I am just saying that when he gets to Heaven he forgets all those troubles he had and that makes Earth that much more beautiful.

I dunno, to me this song isn't about cheating in terms of a wife. Instead its a girl that has 4 different guys, the fifth being Adam. She is beautiful so Adam lusts for her, and she is smart so she can keep all the guys from running off. Adam keeps coming back even though he knows she isn't really his, or anyone's.

Counting Crows – The Ghost In You (Psychedelic Furs cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Hmm... I have a new take on this song. At first I always thought it was just someone who lost a love, but now I think there is more to it. I think the singer got his heart broke by this girl that said she loved him and all that, but never truly did. Now this girl is doing the same thing to another guy. So the singer is telling this other guy not to get involved. The two were once in the same situation, hence 'man in my shoes.' He runs the light, he is happy, walking on air and he's like a newspaper, he is telling the world that she loves him. Its the news of the day because tomorrow it will be different.

The next stanza... well pretty much he says he is in the mood to talk to the guy. He's trying to talk him out of loving this girl because she won't love him back. "Love... you can't give it away." They are racing against time, he's falling in love and soon it will be too late before the guy gets hurt. The singer's 'engines die' because the guy is arguing with him and not listening. So the singer tells the guy that she will get inside of him and like a ghost she will haunt him forever.

Next stanza the guy is still arguing, he thinks that he is superman and that he will be different. That the girl will really love him.

The love is all of heaven away just means that the guy is dreaming. Real love with her is further than he'll get in a lifetime.

Counting Crows – Raining In Baltimore Lyrics 17 years ago
My opinion is that the beginning, about the circus is what he considers their relationship. The circus is ending, the big top is coming down. Just like saying that all the fun and good times will soon be gone. Things ended so he leaves, he goes to Baltimore. He takes the train to the city, where its raining. Its not literally raining, its just raining because he's sad. He needs a raincoat, because everyday it rains on him, the world hates him. He needs a phone call and a plane ride because they would bring him closer to her. He needs a sunburn... kinda like saying he just needs the sun, needs to be pulled from his depression. "What would you change if you could?" Well that seems simple to me, he's asking if, and hoping that, she feels the same way. If she would change the distance between them. He could buy a new car and go back to her or he could always take the train back to her. Either way he knows he really can't do that so he just wishes the world was smaller. He needs her call, he needs the hope she brings him.
Great song!

Bryan Adams – Cuts Like A Knife Lyrics 17 years ago
I think its about someone loving another person but the other person never really loves them back. The other person leads them on, but just like in the past, they hurt the other person. "It cuts like a knife but it feels so right" this to me is saying that it hurts, but the pain is so familiar that it almost feels right.
