Sufjan Stevens – Majesty, Snowbird Lyrics 12 years ago
i adore this song. i think this is one of the many sufjan songs with room for interpretation... but he is usually pretty clear about the inspiration for each song. i think it's funny (and brilliant) that half the time it is a bird... the snowbird he's talking about here is a little gray bird that often show up in snowstorms-- i don't really feel the need to do too much interpretation, but i think the main feel of the song is that of beauty/grace/small things showing up in unlikely, even bad, places. simple, and lovely. i've never seen the snowbird (that i know of) but i used to see these tiny red birds in the middle of the snowy treetops in russia that look like springtime birds, but they only come out in below freezing temperatures. you can relate it all you want to the Bible and the Dove but sometimes all you need is to think about the bird.

Sufjan Stevens – The Child with the Star on His Head Lyrics 12 years ago
modern christmas hymn, weary and disillusioned and in spite of everything, completely comforting.

Derek Webb – Zeros & Ones Lyrics 14 years ago
i've never thought that the zeros and ones were in reference to literal numbers, be it computers, album sales, whatever. but the song has always served to remind me that everything, eventually, will either last (1) or come to nothing (0). money is part of it, but i think he may be talking about something bigger.

Bob Dylan – Everything Is Broken Lyrics 15 years ago
love it. ain't no use jiving, ain't no use joking. if we want healing we first have to admit everything is broken.

Sufjan Stevens – The First Full Moon Lyrics 15 years ago
sometimes i think sufjan's songs are so obscure there's no point in trying to figure out what he meant. awesome song though. sounds like a b-side to A Sun Came. anyone know for sure?

Anathallo – ...In The Atlas Position Lyrics 17 years ago
these lyrics are beautiful..
sorrow... assurance... life.

does anyone know what they mean by "the atlas position"? all that's coming to mind is that guy in greek mythology who was punished by zeus and had to carry the earth on his shoulders for eternity.. or something like that.

Midlake – Roscoe Lyrics 17 years ago
i think it's sort of a lament... for a simpler time, a time of working with your hands and actually making something practical and beautiful-- the mountaineers building their own houses. he seems to be saying with all the new industries (hundreds and hundreds of chemicals) we've lost ourselves... i dunno how to describe exactly what it says to me but it makes me want to get away from the cities and back to the basics of human life.
