Seether – Breakdown Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyricsperson1 I think what you said about Amy Lee dumping his ass like anybody else would have done shows that you do not know much about a healthy relationship. It will only work if each person cares about the other more or as much as they care about themselves. Amy Lee not only abandoned Shaun, but then embarassed him in the public's eye with Call Me When You're Sober. She was only in it for herself.

This song gets that message across perfectly. "What a waste of my time when the world we had was yours." Shaun is saying that she can write about whatever she want and attack him openly with her bowl-stirring band Evanescence, but he is more than the image that she is making him out to be.

Audioslave – We Got The Whip Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is less political than people are making it out to be. I also don't think that the song refers specifically to one country.

It seems to me that it is more of a look at war and fighting in general. Even the most hard-nosed, fearless, dedicated soldier will be killed when he runs into more powerful, dangerous resource that he doesn't have access to. No matter what he does, his potential is limited without things such as equipment, weapons, etc. But is that really "fair"? It brings about a deeper underlying question about war itself.

Chris Cornell – Sunshower Lyrics 16 years ago
Supah Dude, unless your reading off an official list of Chris Cornell's top 20 songs or something, your opinion is just like everyone elses.

This song has absolutely fantastic imagery, it progresses amazingly, and is sung with great passion. That is enough to make an awesome song right there, in my opinion.

Chris Cornell – Disappearing Act Lyrics 16 years ago
This one seems to me like it is about the futility of human life.

We go around hiding from death, stretching our faces to look young, lying about our ages, and death (dressed and draped in a cold black cape) is indifferent to the whole struggle.

Our lives are a constant series of building relationships and tearing them down, building hope and tearing it down, building dreams and tearing them down. And in the back of our heads we know that at the end of every road lies death. All of the tail-chasing and nail biting is futile, for we are all frail in the end.

Chris Cornell – Billie Jean (Michael Jackson cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that Cornell's version is more fitting in the sense that the sad tone reflects the mood of the lyrics more than the pop version from Micheal Jackson.

Chris Cornell – Ghosts Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd say you're on the right track, but that the old Cornell that he is referring to is the Soundgarden grunge star. People have come knocking on his door and judging all of his work based on Soundgarden, when he has evolved into a completely different musician then he was back then.

Chris Cornell – Scar On The Sky Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of my two favorite songs on the new album. The lyrics and singing are beautifully done, and it kind of reminds me of a zeppelin/pink floyd type song.

Chris Cornell – Safe and Sound Lyrics 17 years ago
This one is pretty simple and self-explanatory. Why can't we all just get along? I believe he commented that "as much as I thought this was too simple of an attitude to put into song form, I just did it anyway, and I was very happy with the way it turned out."

I heard this one live, and Cornell dedicated it to all of the victims and families of the Virginia Tech shootings, it was a very moving piece.

Chris Cornell – When I'm Down Lyrics 17 years ago
In general, the speaker realizes that his love for this individual is only felt in connection to some kind of depression or grief.

submissions
Chris Cornell – You Know My Name Lyrics 17 years ago
Nexxus your post just shows how much people will warp the purpose of a song to fit into their own ideas and beliefs.

It's a James Bond theme song by Chris Cornell (yes, the same Chris Cornell who has always wrote about religion sarcastically) - not Creed or Trinity or whateverthefuck. It relates to the movie Casino Royale - not God and Lucifer... just spare us your nonsense.

Chris Cornell – No Such Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to have it's roots in Chris Cornell's past - his failed relationships, his battles with drug addictions, depresson and anorexia.

The chorous and the concept of the song seem to deal with the absence of love and happiness. He is saying that there is no such thing as feeling nothing. Since there is no such thing as nothing, there needs to be a feeling in life that replaces happiness when happiness is gone. For Cornell, these were feelings of depression and anguish. He has now reached the resolution that to save yourself in the absence of happiness you need to make the "choice of how you fill the hole".

Temple of the Dog – Call Me A Dog Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that the speaker in this has a lover who treats him like a lowlife; which is fair enough, because he considers himself a lowlife to a certain extent.

However, he is saying that it is his turn for action. He, unlike her, is going to either commit fully and completely to the relationship or forget about it entirely. (I'll call you beautiful or leave it alone)

Soundgarden – Holy Water Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I really love Cornell's sarcastic attitude towards all religion.
He was brought up with strictly religious parents and schooling, and in his music, he seems to be rebelling from this. That is a recurring theme in his music.

Audioslave – Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye Lyrics 17 years ago
Considering the recent breakup, maybe Cornell wrote this song with the bands demise in mind.

Best Boston song by far. Everything fits so perfectly, the energy created is amazing.

Audioslave – Revelations Lyrics 17 years ago
That makes a lot more sense, immortalbattery.

In that sense, this is my interpretation. So many religious people/religions in general convince people that they are among the high and mighty, and influence them to look down on those who don't share the same beliefs. Many religious people think that they know something that everyone else doesn't know, and that it is their duty to go about the world spreading the truth. 'Revelations' gives a sarcastic outlook on this concept.

Thin Lizzy – Don't Believe A Word Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the lyrics in this song are amazing, much more deep than most music of the day.

"Don't believe a word, for words are so easily spoken", what a great powerful line that is.

submissions
Audioslave – The Last Remaining Light Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is a religious song, but in a different way that most others did.

Key line: Heaven waits for those who run. I think he is talking about the imminent fate of all life; death. It may be harder to accept that, so people stray away from that with beliefs of the afterlife. Those who don't believe that "the sun will rise" (life will rise after death) need to stand alone and greet death in the last light that they will ever see.

Bad Company – All Right Now Lyrics 17 years ago
It was actually written by Rodgers in a somewhat frustrated state after a show went bad. Awesome song, it still kills me to listen to this and think about how Free broke up on the brink of discovering something huge.

Audioslave – Wide Awake Lyrics 17 years ago
As I listen to this song more and more, the thing that has me hooked on this song is Cornell's voice on the verses. It sounds so accusing, so disgusted with what has happened.

Audioslave – Moth Lyrics 17 years ago
For those of us who have followed Cornell through his career, we that HIS purpose for writing the song was to express his feelings about his battle with drug addictions.

However, with just about all of Cornell's lyrics, they can mean something completely different to every person who hears them. To you, it can seem to be referring to any kind of addiction or destructive habits. But while I would usually refrain pinning down Cornell lyrics to one meaning, it is clear what he was writing about.

Audioslave – One and the Same Lyrics 17 years ago
Simply put, all love that begins must end one way or the other, and the result of that ending, more often that not, is pain.

Good song, one of my favourites, and definitely something different from Audioslave.

Audioslave – Revelations Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to have a sarcastic tone to it, maybe the speaker taking who has grown tired of thier egotistical lover and hir or her foolish pride. The speaker in this song says, sarcastically, 'since you know everything there is to know, share it with us and let the rest of the world catch up.'

Audioslave – Shape of Things to Come Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought the lyrics on this were deeper than those of Out of Exile. However, they weren't as deep as the lyrics of Audioslave.

Lyrics from songs like Exploder, I am the Highway, Shadow of the Sun, Last Remaining Light, were very deep and among my favorite lyrics of all time.

Audioslave – Moth Lyrics 17 years ago
No, it's clearly about Cornell's drug problems.

He was tempted by the drugs (putting his hand over the flame), and thought he wouldn't get addicted, but learned the opposite. (Thought I was smarter... But it turned out the way it does with everyone). Hence the title Moth - a creature which is helplessly attracted to the flame against it's own good.

This is an aged and more wise Cornell, making a statement against the addictions which have haunted his past. ( I won't fly around your fire anymore)

Awesome song, kind of disappointing that noone has commented before me.

This fit very well in the Sopranos when they used it during a whacking scene!

I agree with you guys and am sick of people referencing to Rage and Soundgarden every time they analyze or review an Audioslave work. Zack is gone, Rage and Soundgarden are done, move the fuck on and recognize Audioslave as an entirely new and different band.

Back to the song... this is a pretty kickass songs, one of my favs on the new album. My favorite part is
"There's no need to apologize for the riot in your eyes, somedays, just aint so easy"

Audioslave – Wide Awake Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree strongly with what these lyrics are saying.

The connection to the war in Iraq is this. A poor sub-America has formed and while Bush talks so strongly about defending these rights for people across the country, he is denying them to people who actually live in the US.

Audioslave – Jewel Of The Summertime Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about someone who's life is heading downward with the passing of time, but is constantly being reminded of the good times before things were stressful and dark - a better period of time where there was less worries and problems in the world.

Audioslave – Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye Lyrics 17 years ago
This is about somebody who has time and time again been through failed relationships and eventually hits rock bottom, but was saved by a new lover. The speaker insists that no matter how many times he has failed and how likely it is that this one will fail too, he will fight to keep it together.

This idea seems to be communicated through Cornell's comparison of the situation to the rescue of a stray dog; someone who could not fend for itself and was saved by the good of another.

Audioslave – Shape of Things to Come Lyrics 17 years ago
This one seems to be Cornell's expression of family related emotions, his fear of the future but unwillingness to 'break down in the shape of things to come'.

Audioslave – Moth Lyrics 17 years ago
While most Audioslave lyrics can have many meanings, this one is clearly about Cornell's drug problems in the past.

This is one of my favorites, great lyrics, great singing. A lot of energy in this song...

Audioslave – Wide Awake Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the chorous of this song.

And the lyrics stand out as well, this is Audioslaves most political song yet... a well written piece about government inaction post-katrina, claiming that people were left to die.

Audioslave – Drown Me Slowly Lyrics 17 years ago
I've found 2 possible meanings to this song.

One is that the speaker is fighting off a disease that kills him slowly, i.e. cancer. He says he has a feeling it will all go away, and that he can't walk on water yet - as in he isn't dead quite yet.

The other is that the song is about the violence and darkness in today's culture. The speaker is worried about being drowned in violence - he sees it everywhere in society. However, he won't let himself be overcome by darkness and violent feelings.

Audioslave – I Am the Highway Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree that the chorus is a seperate voice in the song. The speaker in the song is depressed, wandering around wallowing in sadness and expecting sympathy and happiness to be placed at his feet.

The god is telling him that he isn't the wheels (as in he won't take him to happiness directly), but the highway (the road to happiness). However, he must travel this road himself. He must work towards happiness instead of wandering around in self-pity.

Free – Wishing Well Lyrics 17 years ago
It may seem that way but the song really isn't about that. That was just a popular speculation that turned into a big rumor.

The song Come Together in the Morning is a lot more likely to be about Kossoff and the bands past.

Chris Cornell – Can't Change Me Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems like a song about a girl that has it all; freinds, brains, looks, success, etc. Basically, somebody with a magnetic personality who is destined to succeed at everything they do in life.

While the speaker admires the girl greatly and sees her potential, he vows not to let her under his skin. He blocks her out of his mind and find comfort in the fact that he is stronger than her appeal.

Soundgarden – Burden in My Hand Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about somebody who is in a relationship with a woman who is coping with problems. Maybe alcoholism or something of the sort. Either way, instead of getting her the help she needs, he views her as a burden in his hand, and tosses her off to the side just to make his own life easier.

Without any guidance, this woman's life has gone drastically downhill, and now he feels guilty about it. He now realizes that what is easy isn't always best, and feels miserable about it, but there is nothing he can do.

I'm responding to scottevil, who said on the first page that aveneged sevenfold is more like metal.

Avenged Sevenfold is more like shit. It's a fucking disgrace to all of music, and shouldn't even be used in the same sentence as the name of a real metal band like Iron Maiden.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 18 years ago
Also, 'One more time around' is a repetitive phrase in this song. To me this speaks of the seeming life cycle of the dreams in the life of the speaker. Every time the speaker reaches a crossroads in his life, he tells himself 'next time I'll take the oppertunity', or 'this dream might be the one that becomes a reality'.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about somebody who wakes up rejuvenated with their mind dead-set on making a breakthrough in their life or enjoying newfound success. However, as the day goes on, he realizes that he doesn't have the resolve or will to work toward his goals; he talks himself out of taking a big risks, procrastinates again in the task of finding success in his life.

By the end of the day, he realizes that he is just like everybody else, just another average guy with no special abilities or stand out talent. He learns that he is a liar, but it seems that he has lied to himself, telling himself that he can succeed, and that he is different than everybody else.

Very powerful song, quite pessimistic meaning. In my opinion, one of the best that Soundgarden wrote, and the best vocal performance I have ever heard from Chris Cornell.
