Liars – They Don't Want Your Corn - They Want Your Kids Lyrics 13 years ago
most of the lyrics of this song are quotes taken from the movie "The Sweet Hereafter", which is about a schoolbus accident in a small Canadian town.

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 15 years ago
it's literally about gambling folks, seriously.

stacks = poker chips.

i keep throwing it down 200 at a time = putting more money down.

he's dangling my keys, even fakes a toss = an opponent has his keys in a bet and is making fun of him.

when your money's gone, and you're drunk as hell = self-explanatory

rather, it would be for HIM, since this is an Ed Droste song and Ed likes the sausage. :)

Jimmy Eat World – Futures Lyrics 15 years ago
the line "trade up for the fast ride" appeared, too, in the song "in the same room" from their earlier album, Static Prevails.

Wonder what the connecting thread is between the two songs.

Veruca Salt – Shutterbug Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought it was referring to PJ Harvey and Steve Albini's relationship. He produced three of Harvey's albums and there were rumors of a romance there. He could be seen as the last living rock king by Veruca Salt, who are fellow Chicago residents and whom Albini also produced. Just a thought.

Pavement – Here Lyrics 16 years ago
Everclear is everything indie music isnt. How many songs can you write with the same three chords about how bad your divorcing parents/father were to you? Or your struggle with drugs?

And shut up about the Pixies already, Jesus there are other great bands! If Pavement apes anyone its the Fall, but that doesnt take away that Pavement is definitely the greatest indie band of all time, hands down.

Thursday – For The Workforce, Drowning Lyrics 17 years ago
It's interesting how throughout War All the Time there are lyrically references to other bands. In this case it's A Silver Mount Zion. The song "Take These Hands and Throw Them in the River" from 'Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward'

The Photo Album came out in 2000, not after 2001.

So there goes the 9/11 theory.

Do your research.

Amazing, underrated song.

Gibbard has written about this a couple of times anyhow. Namely "We Will Become Silhouettes."

Death Cab for Cutie – Underwater Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song has got to be about the end of the world. Associating armies and tanks and battlegrounds with Interstates and "the outskirts with cars on blocks and houses run down", ie decimated from some post-apocalyptic ordeal seems to point to this. Obviously waking children in the night and hiding "details in a jar" and burying them would go with some sort of invasion. Displaying our diseased organs could mean people who have survived a nuclear exchange/fallout. Celebrating tax-free seems to mean that after the world has ended, you can celebrate because at least there's no more taxes.

That's just how it seems to me.

Modest Mouse – Custom Concern Lyrics 17 years ago
TheSink, you're an asshole who knows nothing about what it takes to be a musician. Do you think musicians have it easy, that it isn't a real job and theyre just handed fame and fortune? Do you really think MM was always so popular that Issac never had to work a regular job during the band to support himself? As a band member I get so sick of retards like you who know nothing about the business yet mouth off like theyre experts.

Until Good News, Issac had to do shitty work like janitoring and hosing out slaughterhouse trucks. He grew up poor in a trailer, he's been in jail, he's had a rough life. Your idea of rock stars is amazingly naive. So shut up, dumbass. You have no opinion.

Modest Mouse – Path of Least Resistance Lyrics 17 years ago
This little song has an interesting connection to "Grey Ice Water". That song has a theme of moving to Alaska and working in the cannery/fishing business to escape an ex-girlfriend. Taking the "path of least resistance" is mentioned in that song, and as we all know how Brock likes to link diff. songs together with the same lyrics and themes, I wonder if the "gone fishin'...i'm taking the path of least resistance" has a connection to the theme of "Grey Ice Water".

The Mountain Goats – In Corolla Lyrics 17 years ago
kinda creeps me out to hear this for another reason. the mountain goats live in durham, nc. i live on the outer banks of nc, not too far away, and with the ocean references i'm assuming the title refers to corolla, nc, which i live right near and which i used to work in. kind of odd, in a way.

Modest Mouse – Novocain Stain Lyrics 18 years ago
So wrong, so wrong, this is what the lyrics are when investigated through EXPENSIVE headphones, folks-

When I can work it how it was,
Then I'll tell you,
TV state my memories, yeah,
I don't fit their shoes...

Remember through sounds,
remember through smells,
remember through colors,
remember through towns
with fear and fascination
on what was here,
and what's replacin' 'em now...

Interchange, plazas and malls,
and crowded chain restaraunts,
more housing developments go up,
named after the things they replace,
so welcome to Meadow Brook,
and welcome to Shady Space,
well it all seems a little abrupt,
well no I don't like this change of pace...

For variations on this theme, see: The View, Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Convenient Parking, Cowboy Dan, A Different City, The Cold Part, Tiny Cities Made of Ashes, Custom Concern, Beachside Property, Ohio, I'm sure there's even more.

God Bless Modest Mouse.
