The Coup – Heven Tonite Lyrics 14 years ago
"I used to think about infinity
and how my memory is finna be invisibly slim in that vicinity
And though the stars are magnificent
whisky and the midnight sky can make ya feel insignificant
The revolution in this tune and verse
is a bid for my love to touch the universe"

This song is so damn beautiful. And it's true, we could make heaven tonight if everybody had this mindset.

"Yo, I can't stand no ecstacy.
Cocaine made a mess of me.
Beer and booze are now things that I use to do.
Don't misconstrue, I'm still abusin' weed."

"LSD and shrooms, I tried them,
was a time when I wouldn't deny them.
All you need is one trip where you lose your shit,
kiss goodbye to the sky with diamonds;"

"And I ain't no Nancy Reagan,
just sayin' kinda take it slow.
Say yeah to the jazz cigarette,
say nil to the thrills of pills and blow."

He's repeatedly talking about using caution when doing drugs. The song is definitely a tribute to weed, but unlike most pro-weed songs he's not saying drugs in general are harmless or that weed can't be abused. It's not just a straight up pro-drug song, there's clearly a lot of space between this song and Three 6 Mafia saying "I gotta stay high till I die"

Handsome Boy Modeling School – The Projects (PJays) Lyrics 14 years ago
This reminds me of a verse from 2nd Quarter Free Throws by KRS-One:
When someone says the rich gets richer,
visualize wealth and put yourselves in the picture
The rich get richer, cause they work towards rich
the poor get poorer, cause their minds can't switch
from the ghetto, let go, it's not a novelty
you could love your neighborhood without loving poverty

I think this song is conveying the exact same message.

Andrew W.K. – Long Live The Party Lyrics 14 years ago
Andrew W.K. uses "party" as a metaphor for a lot of things, depending on the song. In "Party Hard", partying is doing what you love most without caring what people think. In this song, "the party" is more of a metaphor for the freedom to do what you want. People can try to restrict this freedom, they can make drugs illegal, they can bust up raves, but they can never truly kill the party. We will always find a way to have our fun.

"Do you care what you are?
Where's your pride?"

Here, he's talking to the people who try to kill the party, which is basically anyone who has the false sense that their lifestyle is correct and others should follow it. We are all guilty of this at times, if you've ever laughed at a drunk guy dancing by himself, if you've ever seen someone doing something that wasn't "cool" in your book and judged them for it, all these kinds of instances are part of the problem. This song and AWK in general makes the statement that if people are having fun, there's nothing wrong with what they're doing. If you're spending your life making snide remarks from the back of the room at someone who's having fun, you're wasting your life, you are the uncool and pathetic one, not them.

"We don't know
But we dont wonder why"

We don't understand why other people have fun in different ways from us, but unlike the party-killers, we don't care, we're too busy having our fun to care. Live and let live.

"The more that you can give it, then the more it will be
And if you do not have it, you can take it from me
All we ever wanted was a thing to believe,
And now that we have found it, we have all that we need."

Probably my favorite AWK lyrics of all time. If you are non-judgmental and radiate positivity and acceptance like Andrew does, this will affect those around you and you will make the world a better place. If you aren't feeling good, you can listen to AWK and absorb some of his positivity. This is why I love Andrew W.K., the whole point of his music is to just make people feel good, and to have those good feelings inspire us to do what we're passionate about. Believing in the idea of doing what you want no matter what is all we need to be happy. We don't need complex religious or political philosophies to live a good life, the only philosophy we need is: do what you want, and let others do what they want. It's so simple, but somehow so hard for us to follow.

Dan Deacon – The Crystal Cat Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about materialism. I know, it sounds farfetched, but hear me out. These lines in particular interested me:

go worship the stone
keep the crystal cat cold
gotta get to the throne

"The stone" appears in Bromst also, in Build Voice, he says:
Behold, the stone it gleams like gold
Out of control the beasts unknown and untold

Oh oh ohhhh! The stooonnnee!
As I'm told unfolds

In the context of Build Voice, I definitely see "the stone" as a metaphor for money and materialism. So, assuming Dan's lyrical motifs mean the same thing in each song they're in, it would seem "go worship the stone" means he is going to pursue a materialistic lifestyle. The other line about stones "Gonna get my pile of stones" also suggests that he is trying to gain a large amount of money.

"Gotta get to the throne", then, is the goal he hopes to accomplish through materialism. "Throne" suggests power and authority. Not sure how "big" and "carrot" fit into it. I think it might be a reference to the Neutral Milk Hotel song "The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1". In the song, two children make up the title "The King of Carrot Flowers" for their make-believe kingdom. If he is indeed referencing this song, then by calling it a carrot throne, he is saying the status and authority of the rich and powerful is just as arbitrary as the status and authority children make up for each other.

I'm pretty lost as to the meaning of the crystal cat itself. Thinking of things that "get cold", or fall by the wayside, when one pursues material wealth - spirituality, connection to nature, empathy - there's a lot of candidates. The line , "gonna turn all snakes into bone", I think, is evidence of an environmental message. In pursuing wealth and power, the narrator will do whatever it takes, he'll skin snakes for their exotic leather, even if it causes mass extinction.

Anyway, there's my attempt at an interpretation. It doesn't completely fit - I have no idea what the beastman represents, or what "let them take a load" means. Perhaps he's saying let the poor have some of your wealth, with "load" being a pile of stones, aka money. If you don't think this song means anything, well, consider that "Wham City" the other song on "Spiderman" that seems the most fleshed out, has a very direct and clear environmental message. I definitely think "The Crystal Cat" has a deeper meaning, its just buried under layer upon layer of non sequitur.

Dan Deacon – Snookered Lyrics 14 years ago
sure, maybe the theory is a little hard to believe, but Dan Deacon's lyrics are surreal and absurdist. And I don't think Dan Deacon is above using a silly milkshake pun to make his point, he writes songs about cats and dogs and pitch shifts his voice to chipmunk level in most of his songs. But I don't think that means his songs don't have meaning, rather you just have to do a little digging to find the meaning. In interviews, Dan has talked about how getting older, maturing, growing up, etc. are prominent themes in Bromst. Snookered is the main single off Bromst and encapsulates the sound and meaning of the album as a whole. This song is definitely about life, I don't think it is too much a leap to say that it's specifically about getting older.

Also, it makes sense that Dan would talk about how getting older causes you to lose your memory of what it was like being a kid, and then causes you to lose your youthfulness. Dan Deacon is nearing 30, the age associated with growing up, maturing, leaving behind the party lifestyle of your 20s, etc. So, I think Dan is saying that he is still energetic and can party and entertain us, but not for long. Eventually he'll have to retire when his body can't keep up with the demands of touring.

Cursive – Mama, I'm Satan Lyrics 14 years ago
this song is about how our ego and our desire to have our ego's fed is the root of all evil. in particular he talks about male ego and how sexual instinct turned into the systematic oppression of women for most of man's history. he also talks about how evil is cyclical, we blame our ancestors for the atrocities they committed, and then we end up giving into the the same temptations, repeating their mistakes, and passing them on to our children. but he admits that most of the people at the bottom who fall victim to an evil system can't be blamed themselves, they are just pawns. it's the ego's at the top, the people who exploit millions for their own gain and fortune, that should be blamed.

Nah, you aren't reading too much into it, that's exactly what he's sayin. He realizes if he gets high all the time when he has a kid he'll be a bad parent. he also doesn't want his kid to smoke when he's still a kid, but chris knows that if he sees his dad doing it all the time he'll want to do it to. that's why this song is so great, it's about gettin fucked up, but doing it responsibly. most stances are on either extreme - it's either "drugs are bad" or "drugs are great". it's nice to see song with a more realistic, middle of the road viewpoint

Ok, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out these lyrics but only managed to figure out the first verse... I pitch-shifted his voice down to normal, slowed the song down and used a basic 5 band equalizer to try to isolate toe vocals, but they were still very hard to discern, and I'm still not sure about a couple of the words.

If someone really wants to figure out these lyrics, they're going to need a professional audio mixing program with a better equalizer to do it, I was stuck using a free version of a program.

Eyedea & Abilities – This Story Lyrics 14 years ago
"is no longer instinctual but rather an emotion we use
When ripped of understanding of higher
human ancestors killed each other when we could have loved each other"

should be:
"is no longer instinctual but rather an emotion we use
to enrich our understanding of why our
human ancestors killed each other when they could have loved each other"

which is my favorite line off the whole album. this song is so powerful, the meaning is pretty obvious, it's about how all evil acts mankind has committed can be traced back to primal instincts like fear, fight-or-flight response ("There's no judge or jury when your looking adrenaline in the face"), and territorial defense. Eyedea longs for a future where humans are in control of their instincts instead of the other way around.

Eyedea & Abilities – Paradise Lyrics 14 years ago
"She makes up for what he lacks trapped
He cant imagine life without someone like that."
this song is about codependency. both the man and the woman are codependent on each other, they have many insecurities and problems and they think the other one can fix their problems.

"The average romanticized, American relationship
Sinks, capsized, when either side becomes a slave to it"
This sums up so perfectly and succinctly how most relationships go to shit. In this case they are both slaves to it, fixated on the romanticized western notion that "you complete me". Basically, Eyedea is saying how utterly bullshit this notion is, because if one relies on their significant other to make them whole, they become dependent and eventually start acting like the man and woman in this song do.

"Im dying without you, but its teaching me to live
Heaven aint something someone else can give its all inside of me"
Eyedea is saying the way to fix this is to learn to be your own person, become independent so you won't fall into dependence every time you are in a relationship and repeat the same cycle. Don't rely on another to complete you, if you are both whole, if you are both secure, stable, able to deal with your own problems, the relationship will succeed and your love will create something greater than it's parts. You will be free, not just parasites feeding that keep the other from living their life to sustain themselves.

Really beautiful song, Eyedea is a genius, this is the most honest song about love I've ever heard.

Dan Deacon – Snookered Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's, "Still got my shake, but not for long". Since he is talking about milk in the previous line, it's a play on "milkshake". As in, the milk part is almost gone, but he still has the shake part, but that will go away soon too. shake could be a metaphor for his youthfulness, and milk could represent childhood since little kids are given milk a lot. so he is saying the "taste" or memory of childhood is almost gone, he is still youthful but knows that will end soon too. i think that the song is about getting older and becoming more mature, letting go of the past and embracing the future, etc. it seems to be a major theme in Bromst, especially since the last song is actually called "Get Older".

Metric – Raw Sugar Lyrics 15 years ago
"Raw Sugar" is a metaphor for life, and the realization that the narrator of this song comes too. She wants to get away from society completely after realizing how empty, unfair and uncaring it is. But the thought in her head that she's been fighting all along is that even if she did find a way to live completely removed from society and was able to have fun playing music and doing drugs around a fire all day, she still wouldn't be happy. If you try to eat raw sugar, you quickly find that it is too sweet, to the point that eating more of it stops being pleasurable. The narrator realizes that so too is life. If you try to live a life of pure recreation and happiness, it will soon stop being satisfying, because we as humans determine what is pleasurable by comparing it to what is painful. If you have both pain and pleasure in your life, you can appreciate the pleasure. But if you have only pleasure, every thing you do becomes the same. If nothing you do gives you more pleasure than anything else you do, why do anything? Summer can only come by following winter, without winter neither exist. Life becomes pointless, and soon you are yearning to return to the hectic life full of ups and downs once again.

Metric – Front Row Lyrics 15 years ago
I am pretty sure the correct lyric is:
Burned out stars they shine so bright

Which makes much more sense in the context of the song. The song is from the perspective of an obsessive fan of artist who is a "burned out star".

He's not perfect he's a victim
Of his occupation
Social insulation
Secret intervention
Charging him with possession
I just wanna watch him
Make a break and beat them

His lifestyle as a musician is the cause of his downward spiral, he's another victim of the rock and roll lifestyle like countless others have been. He's become an alcoholic, been arrested for possession of drugs.

But the fan doesn't care about these things and thinks no less of him, she is still a loyal fan.

He's not perfect he's my hero
Smashing the piano
Spitting on the front row
Chronic confrontation
Psychic conversation
Radical compassion
Louder than the action
Of all of us

She knows he's not perfect, but it doesn't change the way she feels about him. Anyone who has ever felt a connection to their favorite artists can relate. Music evokes emotion, powerful songs can illicit the same emotions in the listener that the artist felt. It's no surprise we feel this connection.

And if your favorite artist goes in a downward spiral of alcoholism and drug addiction, the fan can regard them with a sentiment close to that with which they would regard a family member who went in the same downward spiral. They are forgiving of their actions because of their emotional connection with the artist. Her compassion for the artist is "radical", because they have had "psychic conversation" through his music. She feels she knows him on a deeper level by understanding his music and relating to his songs. The more we love someone the more forgiving we are of them. We want to be supportive and on their side, and we don't want to jeopardize our relationship with them.

He can smash his piano, he can even spit on her in the front row, but she is still forgiving. She still says he's just a victim, none of it is his fault. No matter what he does, she will still be there in the front row.

What makes this song so good, I think, is how the fan-artist relationship described in the song can be applied to many other relationships. Many, many people have had relationships like this with family members, friends, boy/girlfriends, etc. . It's a very common part of the human experience, and Emily Haines illustrates it so beautifully.

The Decemberists – The Soldiering Life Lyrics 15 years ago
"They culled you from a cartoon" is my favorite line in this song. Culled is such a perfect word to use because it has two definitions:
1. To pick out from others; select.
2. To remove rejected members or parts from (a herd, for example).
So, it can be read as simply the government selecting him from a "cartoon", ie his life as a bowery tough, which was so stereotypical it was like he was a cartoon thug. But it can also be read as him being the rejected animal from the herd of society, and the government deliberately targeted him and other "toughs" so he could be removed and killed (in war), which is a very subversive notion, one which continues to be an issue today as military recruiters often target the poor.

The ambiguity is deliberate. Colin uses the technique of using words which have multiple meanings to give the line multiple meanings often. It's all over in this song. The ambiguity of the innuendo is also intentional to show that the two soldier's connection was so deep that it bordered on romantic. I have a suspicion that he wanted listeners to hear the song and at first think it was about gay soldiers, but then after closer listening to be unsure of this, because the way outsiders would view the bond between soldiers to be homosexual. But it's not a like the bond between lovers, friends, family members, or anything else, it's a distinct bond that runs deeper than most, to the point that it transcends what is socially acceptable. For example, they share a bed and fall asleep gazing into each other's eyes. Society deems this homoerotic, but they don't. They are completely comfortable with it because they have such a strong connection. The narrator would rather save the life of his fellow soldier than save his own ("I'd rather I'd lose my limbs/Than let you come to harm").

And so the lyrics and sound of the song both hint at homoeroticism in the same way that the bond between soldiers hints at it. Simply beautiful, Colin is a brilliant songwriter.

Rilo Kiley – Pictures of Success Lyrics 16 years ago
the man in this song is most definitely NOT dead. the line is "when" you're dead, as in, sometime in the future, and she addresses him throughout the song. Unless you think she's talking to the dead, the man is alive.

It's much simpler than that. It's a young couple, out of college, and they move to California and are going to try to "make it". They are both trying to find jobs, which obviously scares the narrator, and it implied the man hasn't found work either because "the bills keep changing colors". When you don't pay your bills, new bills arrive in different colors showing that it is urgent that you pay them. The guy wants to go to Mexico and in general doesn't seem to be taking things very seriously. The "when you're dead" lines are the narrator trying to convince herself that she doesn't need him to be successful, she can still "learn world trade or try to map the ocean/when you're dead", which is a very funny line. She's trying to convince herself she's ready to go enter the real world even with a deadbeat boyfriend, but she's not.

Arcade Fire – (Antichrist Television Blues) Lyrics 16 years ago
while the song may indeed be about joe simpson or the brazilian preacer girl, I think they use those cases as archetypes representing corrupt, amoral, hypocritical "holy men". There seem to be countless examples of this in today's world, the preachers who speak out most vehemently against homosexuality end up being homosexual, fundamentalist Christian politicians preaching "ethics" and "family values" inevitably end up being morally bankrupt, etc. This song also has some of the best lines in the whole album,

"Lord, would you send me a sign,
'cause I just gotta know if I'm wastin' my time!"
The preacher has no faith, he's never experienced god and he's starting to feel as if his whole life has been a waste of time, because there might not even be a god, or it might not be the god he envisions. This is also supported by the verse,
"My lips are near
But my heart is far away
Tell me what to say
I'll be your mouthpiece"
He speaks as if he knows god, but in his heart he does not. This thought can strike a chord with just about everyone.

"And show the men it's not about the money."
Again, another symbol for all religion. Many religions have been accused about only being in it for the money since they don't have to pay taxes, namely the Catholic Church, televangelists, megachurchesl, etc.

"Oh! my little bird in a cage!"
A bird being released from a cage symbolizes transcendence, or a spiritual awakening. Arcade Fire may be suggesting here that organized religion keeps your spirituality in a cage, and that it is not the way to find god, through a middleman or a set religion. This theory is further supported in My Body is a Cage, depending on your interpretation.

Arcade Fire – Neon Bible Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, I agree with a lot of the posts hear. I thought it was about religion in the modern, western world and how it's been caught up in consumerism and commercialism, hence "neon bible". You go to the store every week to get milk, you go to church every week to get your dose of god, then instantly move on. The spirituality is gone, it's just another process. Pastors and Priests are always trying to tie in the stories in the Bible to modern life, some people want creationism taught in public schools, religion is ingrained in politics (at least in the US), televangelism that's just in it for the money, megachurches as big as stadiums that have the priests image on a giant screen with his voice magnified around the sanctuary, it's all so convoluted that it's lost its meaning. Religion isn't personal anymore, it's everywhere and in-your-face like a giant neon sign. Even if you close your eyes you can still see it's glow. There's no escaping it.

I also thought this was about Christian fundamentalism, eg. televangelism, megachurches, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell et al preaching that the end is always near, the rapture is coming, that 99% of the world is going to hell, that we should fear god, and there's not much chance for survival if what their saying is true.

I feel the song is coming from just an ordinary man's point of view, maybe Win. He looks out and sees all this, this giant Neon Bible everywhere, and all he can do is laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all. I love Arcade Fire's take on religion, they've had similar themes like in Neon Bible in other songs, such as Neighborhood #4:

And it's not heaven I'm pining for
But there's some spirit I used to know
That's been drowned out by the radio!

Basically sums up this song, spirituality drowned out by the modern commercial world.

Rilo Kiley – The Moneymaker Lyrics 16 years ago
People saying it's not about the sound, of course it's about the sound. Deep lyrics wouldn't mean shit if the music and vocals were average. And bands change their sound, especially indie bands, and their so-called fans unfailingly whine about it because hating a bands new stuff somehow makes them better fans. People complained More Adventurous was too poppy, The Crane Wife was too different, Plans was too mainstream. Come on, you're not going to get another Execution of All Things or another Take-offs and Landings. Bands change and evolve and experiment, if they just did the same thing over and over it would be fucking boring.

And yeah, it's more simple than their normal stuff, but there still is deeper meaning to it. Ostensibly it's about the porn industry, but on a deeper level it's about the power of money; the universal power of money that propels people to completely humiliate and degrade themselves.

Also, are those actual porn stars in the video? I thought they were just actors. If RK managed to trick them into doing those interviews and the music video without them ever realizing they were being completely mocked...

Also also, the song goes well with the album name, since a blacklight shows semen stains... exposing the porn industry... maybe I'm looking too much into this.

Interesting, I thought it was about Jenny Lewis turning 30 and becoming pat of that statistic, or age group.

The song seems to be about Jenny, during some time when they were separated and Johnathan was lonely. "Well, it’s summer time in California"
"And we were drinking champagne in the Mulholland hills"
Jenny is from LA, Mulholland hills are in LA.

"But you still got a hold on me

Jenny is 31 while Johnathan is 24.

Also, it's "You have taken up with thieves" not "thee"

Do you need to celebrate Christmas in order to be happy? Hell no. Do you need snow?? Florida doesn't fucking have snow during Christmas, should we write a benefit song for them too? This song is a western-centric ego trip, nothing more. They act like Africans are a bunch of drooling, retarded, poor babies. "Aww, look at the widdle poor Africans. How sad. Someone should really do something about it. Well I'm going to drive home in my ferrari, then get into a hot bath of diamonds, and maybe have a light snack of money salad."

Africa needs massive economical and political reform, not free food and money thrown at them. It's like the saying everyone's heard, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat forever."

If you want to help Africa buy buying a song, buy "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?" It is a far better song sung by far better artists and all benefits go to UNICEF (which is much better than just giving them free food)

And before anyone calls me another Christianity-hating Athiest, I am a Christian, a Christian who hates it when other Christians try to convert other people and ruin countries cultures.

Rilo Kiley – Jenny, You're Barely Alive Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is not about you you egotistical prick. i hate when people say that. you can relate to a song but saying it is about you is just about the most narcissistic thing i can think of.

Jenny Lewis – You Are What You Love Lyrics 18 years ago
"I'm fraudulent, a thief at best
A coward who paints a bullshit canvas"

One of my favorite lines in this album. It's has a simple meaning but it is said so beautifally. I love how she says bullSHIT.

Jenny Lewis – Run Devil Run Lyrics 18 years ago
Are you kidding? The Watson twins are fantastic. They fill out Jenny's voice quite nicely. It is supposed to sound 'gospelly' because it is all about questioning faith and God. This is a perfect build to The Big Guns and the rest of the album.
