David Bowie – Blackstar Lyrics 8 years ago
1. The title of the song 'Blackstar' refers to the unreleased Elvis Presley song 'Black Star' which is solely about death and has the lyrics:

Every man has a black star
A black star over his shoulder
And when a man sees his black star
He knows his time, his time has come

2. 'On the day of execution, only women kneel and smile'

Refers to the assisted suicide that will have taken place to relieve Bowie of his suffering, and which was staged purposefully 2 days after his birthday and the release of the album.

The song 'Girl Loves Me' later on the album reinforces this with the lyric 'Where the fuck did Monday go'. Bowie died on Monday morning.

Joy Division – Heart and Soul Lyrics 8 years ago
The key lines for me: you take my place in the showdown I'll observe with a pitiful eye I'l humbly ask for forgiveness a request well beyond you and I.

My view is this is Ian speaking to the rest of the band who may or may not carry on after his departure. He'll watch down from afar on them as they perform (the showdown) and can only ask for their forgiveness for potentially ruining their future as musicians.

Nick Drake – Northern Sky Lyrics 9 years ago
Seeing how he was able to imagine and describe this kind of incredible beauty, its no surprise that Nick was unable to reconcile this view with the ugliness of the world around us.

Prince – Adore Lyrics 12 years ago
One of Prince's very finest songs, it sounds so heartfelt, until the point he says 'You could burn up my clothes, smash up my ride, well maybe not the ride' - which is perfect because its with that line he shows us he's not prepared to let the song descend into schmaltz. Wonderful.

David Bowie – Always Crashing in the Same Car Lyrics 18 years ago
The extensive use of cut-up technique on both Low and 'Heroes', makes interpretation difficult.

David Bowie – Fantastic Voyage Lyrics 18 years ago
Bowie himself has written that this song was related to the threat of nuclear holocaust, which in 1797, was very real indeed. He has stated that the "depression" referred to, was that of world leaders who seemed to be imposnig their misery on the rest of society. "We'll get by I suppose" only barely raises the spirits in this otherwise very downbeat, gentle song.

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is more downbeat, perhaps even cynical than people think. Yes these people love each other - but it's them against the world, and as the deliberate quotation marks around the word heroes suggests, perhaps its a futile gesture in a relentless society.
