Pain of Salvation – Icon Lyrics 1 year ago
I feel that this song is about being afraid to grow older. Not old necessarily, just older. Always seeing new faces become old friends become forgotten contacts, always seeing the things you love eventually end, to be replaced by new things in some level of continuity until the inevitable final time. This song also makes me feel that he fears some certain aspect of growing up (Genius.com commenter mentions a consensus that people believe he is afraid to become a father; Gildenlow has three children in real life so this song might be about a younger time in his life)

maudlin of the Well – Monstrously Low Tide Lyrics 6 years ago
The narrator finds an old key on a beach, assumedly when the tide was much lower than usual, thus allowing this treasure to be seen and found. Because of this fascinating find, the narrator conjures all sorts of imagination about what the key may be to, where it came from, and what mysteries it could unlock. The seashore suddenly becomes more interesting to him as he now sees it as a place of wonderment. Thus begins the narrator's love and adoration for the ocean.

Peter Silberman – Maya Lyrics 6 years ago
Maya, ( Sanskrit: “magic” or “illusion”) a fundamental concept in Hindu philosophy, notably in the Advaita (Nondualist) school of Vedanta. Maya originally denoted the magic power with which a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion.

Definitely helps contextualize this song, especially a line like "Depreciating vehicles stuck under snow / Shoveled out without illusion."

Mazzy Star – All Your Sisters Lyrics 6 years ago
The line about wine is the most telling in this song. Consider two parts of it:

A. "catch me drinking of your wine", I think the phrase 'your wine' is important because it implies there's something unique about the intoxication she feels in relation to the person. Drinking someone's wine might be like you're convinced by and adoring of their insanity / sense of overt enchantment. I feel like someone who is infatuated with another could be said to have 'drunk from their spirits'.

B. the fact that they're not supposed to be drinking the wine at all, hence why they were 'caught', implies that they shouldn't be together at all, especially not with how much of an influence he has on her.

I do not know who the sisters are or why they want to fly around her golden sky, but the part about surprising the devil makes me feel like she's planning to do something so insidious, not even the Godfather of Evil could have seen it coming.

listening in 2017, this passage feels like he was predicting 2016 back in 2011.

To Whom It May Concern:
Fuck you and your front lawn
I'd rather die with my hands tied than holding a gun
There's no place like home for collecting burdens
and conjuring ghosts that don't know they're dead
Soon there's going to be a fight
and we'll all have to choose sides
Like kids on the playground
But everyone's hungry

@[oldmanstauf:6271] reef in a sail = the ship is sunken. the reef at the ocean bottom has taken the ship and grown around it. "Reef in a sail at the edge of the world," our ships try to make it there, but we hit the boundary of the edge of the universe and shipwreck ourselves onto that precipice.

Sonata Arctica – Paid in Full Lyrics 9 years ago
Well that's what I mean, balancing out the blame by having a heavy period of "It's your fault," then coming through that as a natural way of leveling it out to see that they were both at fault. It's both and none. etc. most fiction deals with this theme and it's cool to see Kakko have a sense of story arc like that :) five years since I wrote the OP btw.

The Flaming Lips – Guy Who Got a Headache and Accidentally Saves the World Lyrics 9 years ago
Bingo. You just articulated the meaning and secret behind why sacrifice exists. If you do what you love, you replace that love equally. If you do something you hate FOR something you love, you must incur pain but it makes just as prominent a change of love for those around you. Karma is split between two: others, and you. This is someone who basically had to take the pain of bad karma in order to fix the world, and then only then could he achieve himself.

Anathema – Ariel Lyrics 9 years ago
I might as well just say it from a base perspective that this song is about love. But what about love? The fact that the recurring and beginning line of the song is "I found in the dark / I found you in the dark", like a mantra of disbelief as she goes onto plead "Don't leave me / Here". The separation of the word 'here' seems to imply that she's now in the dark, the one that she loves isn't any longer, and the worst part of all is that he's moving past her while she still loves him. She built him up and nurtured him and loved him and now he's grown past her, and she absolutely hasn't grown past him. She even loves him through this decision.

Pure Bathing Culture – Scotty Lyrics 10 years ago
i will always wonder what it's about. the question I ask myself most is, "Is Scotty a good guy?" It almost sounds like she's in an abusive relationship, and Scotty lives with her and it's all the people telling her that he's a deadbeat and that she'll be happier without him, but she justifies it somehow nonetheless. "Scotty's got to stay / Scotty's got his way."

Interesting interpretation. At the Dads show last night, he said that this is a song about how people ruin good chances by not talking out their problems, and how two people can end up heartbroken and alone if just one of the two isn't willing to make the effort for the other. Sounds like you hit it hard.

The Beach Boys – God Only Knows Lyrics 11 years ago
I would like to offer a different take... I am NOT saying that this was the songwriters intent, because I'm sure it was not, but... this is the cruelest song I've ever heard.

I don't hear him saying, "God only knows what I'd be without you," in a sense that he thinks he would be worse off. I think it's a throw off, in the same way "I may not always love you" seems to make you think this will be dreary. In truth, that opening sentiment IS the tone of the song. This isn't love. It masques itself in love, showing his heartfelt feelings as he felt them ("What good would living do me?", etc).

But he means the opposite. This girl was a terror. This girl was a nightmare. This girl took and took and left him broken. And in a meditative moment, maybe even under the stars like the first verse implies, he says it, "God only knows what I'd be without you." He could have been so much better, but instead he's broken. God only knows what life would have been for him if he hadn't crossed her path.

Anathema – Untouchable Part 1 Lyrics 11 years ago
I like that this song remains vague, because when push comes to shove, it is merely the best representation of the pain of letting somebody go. Somebody, a lover likely, who you know your time has ended with. Maybe she betrayed, maybe things just weren't working out, or maybe he knows he has to move on for whatever reason, but... god, he loved her. He still loves her. But he has to let her go. And this song is the best attempt I've ever heard at converting that pain into sound.

The Antlers – Sylvia Lyrics 11 years ago
This album being about the pains of an emotionally abusive relationship, this is the part where he is able to see all the wrongs and issues he and her have, but when he tries to work it out and talk things over, she just resists and throws everything back at him with a volatile attitude. He only wants to take care of her and love her, but she just won't let him.

submissions
The Antlers – Kettering Lyrics 11 years ago
I just got out of an emotionally abusive relationship, and... god, even though the story at face value is being in love with a cancer patient, it's about so much more than that. It's what it feels like to be in a relationship where you know it isn't good for you, where you want to just love them and care for them because you're crazy about the person.

Even though "Prologue" is the technical prologue, this is the best introduction to the situation that there is: he's with a girl he knows he ought to not be with, the signs that they are going to end up not together are all there, but he stays with her. His friends plead with him, tell him that it's futile, but as he says in the last bit:

"You made me sleep all uneven
And I didn't believe them
When they told me that there
Was no saving you"

Giles Corey – Empty Churches Lyrics 11 years ago
Voices of unknown origin appearing on radio frequencies were first noticed by Scandanavia by the military in the thirties. They were put down at the time to secret Nazi transmitters, but the voices spoke in unknown and mixed tongues. And after the war, no record of secret Nazi transmissions ever came to light. The voices didn't stop after war, but their rapidity and their transient nature precluded static. That is, before the tape recorder came into common usage in the fifties. A group of radio hams in Chicago studied the strange transmissions. Male and female voices, speaking in colored melodies and lyrical tones.

But it was not until 1959 that a Russian born Swedish citizen, radio and TV producer and filmmaker, Friedrich Juergenson, noticed intrusions on tape, and commenced his own systematic study. A disturbing fact soon emerged. The voices zeroed in on the Swede, addressing him by name, revealing a knowledge of his thoughts and actions, and claiming to be the the voices of deceased friends and acquaintances. The news spread rapidly, and soon experimenters and scientists all over the world were attempting to duplicate Juergonson's work.

The effect on parapsychologists was dramatic. Accustomed to investigating the blind forces of artifacts through endless and somewhat boring amount of dice guessing experiments, they were confronted with living voices, which answered back. Taken by surprise, the British parapsychologists, without conducting experiments, rejected the objectivity of the voices, explaining them as breakthroughs from police messages, or simply mechanical noises from the tape recorder. But their European counterparts were more cautious, and possibly, with greater technical resources, they soon found out that they were indeed confronted with voices of unknown origin on tape.

Alcest - Travels of the Soul

Tonight probably my soul
Enslaved, worn down by grief,
Feel the need to escape the prison of flesh.
Very far from us, in our time,
She joined work in the stars.

They speak to him of his own existence
In words pure and silent
And show him a path
Leading to unknown harbors
Between heaven and earth.

These regions lontaines,
Where the tall grass in the fields ruddy
Ever waltz with light;
Where can freely roam
All the memories of our lives on Earth
That the time has wanted to erase avenger.

Alcest - Where the Colors Are Born New

I've always lived here yet
As a stranger wandering
On this earth, lonely,
Constantly Detachment,
I intend to call myself from another universe
Sounding bitterly.

All eyes to the sky,
Carrying the burden of my body,
I see my house
Lost in the clouds.
Too much weight here obstinately arm
Holding the minds travelers
About to escape.

By low I see my house
Eternal meadows
Lost in the clouds.
Arise where the new colors
Where my heart and soul remained.

The Black Keys – Gold on the Ceiling Lyrics 12 years ago
In Ohio, 'gold' is in the dialect as being slang for semen, particularly the sperm. If a guy says that he sprayed gold, it means he liked it so much that he (metaphorically) ejaculated. Considering this, the 'they' in the chorus, or, the people who want to get his gold on the ceiling, are the girls that he meets that want to jump his bones. Probably because he's famous and makes money as a rockstar.
