To Leif Erikson.

Sorry, but Kessler writes the songs. Not Banks. Banks is the vocalist.

I'm really angry at the introduction to this song because it's so lackluster and then the rest of the song is so rockin'. Oh well, the chorus is so great in this song.

"See, I'm stuck in a city
But I belong in a field"

One of my favorite lyrics. It reminds me of a quote by Brad Pitt in Fightclub where he says:

"In the world I see -- you're stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You will wear leather clothes that last you the rest of your life. You will climb the wrist-thick vines that wrap the Sears Tower. You will see tiny figures pounding corn and laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of the ruins of a superhighway."

I love songs, like The Outsiders by Franz Ferdinand and this one, in which the song begins, then the drum comes in at a completely different time and changes what you thought the beat of the song was.

The Strokes – Evening Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
This is probably the most musically advanced song I've heard Julian write. It's not necessarily my favorite...but the instrumental is just great, especially the interlude "Go your separate way now...Tell me what'd you do? Nothing? Me to." The bass, and the percussion really stand out to me.

The Strokes – Ask Me Anything Lyrics 18 years ago
Hostile Indians:
We named a summer camp for you.

Possibly the greatest lyric I've ever heard, because there's so many summer camps around here like "Tecumpseh" or "Straight Arrow" that are Native American-inspired so it's like "Hey, we'll make up for stealing your land by naming these summer camps after you."

Pixies – Silver Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Lactosefreeman, the album is moving so fast and then it hits this barrier that is Silver...I always skip it. It's a bore, even the lyrics are predictable and boring: "lady" - "shady" "strangers" - "dangers"

I like the instrumental though, but this just seems like a B-side to me.

Pixies – Nimrod's Son Lyrics 18 years ago
Jjoe, just because Frank Black wasn't the product of incestuous union doesn't mean the song's a joke.

It's like listening to "Motorway to Roswell" and thinking "oh Frank Black is an alien."

He is most likely writing from another person's perspective...such as Nimrod's son...Anyways, Nimrod was the founder of Babylon, and a great hunter.

Random fact of the day!

The whole reason "Nimrod" got it's negative connotation is because Elmer Fudd was called Nimrod (since he's a hunter) and since he's such an idiot people associated it with idiocy.

Every morning and every day
I'll bossanova with ya

It sounds so harsh.

Anyways, what does Bossanova mean. Am I a sheltered idiot and should this be completely obvious?

Pixies – I'm Amazed Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics are very clear in both the Purple Tape and in Surfer Rosa that it's

The day before that I was wed
She went upstairs, and shot her head away

Well when I was a little boy
A ball of string was my favorite toy

And the spoken prelude isn't even on the Purple Tape, so it's deffinitely not part of the song.

I wish I knew what this song meant...

Pixies – La La Love You Lyrics 18 years ago
I deffinitely think it's sarcastic. I always skip over this song, but just from all of the people saying "I love you" over and over again it's like the more they say it the less it means to them.

I never even knew about the first base, second base, third base, home run thing, but now it makes even more sense.

And seriously Edbanky, how can referring to sex with the person you love as a "home run" ever be sweet?

I mean seriously, you go and tell all your buddies about this hot chick you scored a home run with and that's sweet? Christ.

Pixies – Here Comes Your Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Everyone needs to stop saying this song is about WWII. I know, it'd actually be cooler if it was, but in an NME interview Jack Black said:

"This is a pre-Pixies song that I wrote when I was about 15. It's about winos and hobos travelling on the trains, who die in the California Earthquake. Before earthquakes, everything gets very calm—animals stop talking and birds stop chirping and there's no wind. It's very ominous."

Now the lyrics:

"big shake on the box car moving
big shake to the land that's falling down
is a wind makes a palm stop blowing
a big, big stone fall and break my crown
there is a wait so long
you'll never wait so long"

Make sense. A "big shake" to the "box car" the box car being the train cars.

And the "wait" is the wait right before the earthquake when everything's quiet.

Christ, I absolutely loathe this song, I've listened to it a lot over the three or so months I've had this cd, and it hasn't grown on me. It's generic guitar lines and slow vocals...

The only good line is: "My feelings are more important than yours. Oh, drop dead, I don't care." It's just so harsh and blatant.

The Strokes – You Only Live Once Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all, why do people post lyrics when they don't know what they are. If you can READ then you could just look at the correct lyrics in the cover pamphlet that comes with the cd and post them up here. Anyways, I kept avoiding this song at first, going for more heavy handed songs like Electricityscape and Heart in a Cage, but after listening to this a couple times, it's easily my second favorite.

"A man don't notice what they got
Uh, women think of that a lot
One thousand ways to please your man, oh
And every one requires a plan, I know
And countless tired religions too
It doesn't matter which you choose (oh no)
One stubborn way to turn your back, oh
I guess I've tried and I refuse, oh"

It's actually, "Not even one requires a plan" implying that to please a man, all you need to do is sexually please him, which doesn't require a lot of thought.

And the lines "A stubborn way to turn your back" I'm sure would anger a lot of people, but early religions that's really what religion was a bout, a way to turn your back and explain the unknown.

Oh and this song rocks to unfathomable excess live.

I remember, this girl was into the pixies and I asked her what her favorite album was, she told me Bossanova because her name was Allison and there was a song on Bossanova called Allison.

I kicked her in the face.

What a horrible way to base your like for a band on, a song with your name in it.

Arcade Fire – No Cars Go Lyrics 18 years ago
I like On's interpretation of the song, but I think IHaveDreams is actually right.

From the click of the light to the start of a dream. From when you turn off the lights, til you go to sleep, you're kind of left alone with your thoughts, this impenetrable place of thought, so that's where no cars, or spaceships, or submarines, can go.

Hey there is a guy named XxgodlygamerxX and he's a complete asshat who thinks we should solve everything through violence, and who probably doesn't know the definition of the word "diplomatic" so here it is:

"Using or marked by tact and sensitivity in dealing with others. "

You say TACT and DIPLOMACY have never saved a persons' life?

You say someone has a gun to your head and tact won't save your life. Let me ask you this, If you tried to attack whoever had a gun to your head, would they shoot? Of course they would. So if we attack Iran (our next target) will they shoot? Yeah they will. And will people die? Yeah they will. Will Americans die? Yeah, no doubt. So don't tell me VIOLENCE will get LESS people killed, you're a complete idiot. If someone hits you, and you hit back, they'll hit even harder.

So learn about human behavior before you start making comments.

The Strokes – Electricityscape Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, so since Julian Casablancas used to be an alcoholic, and the band almost broke up after Reptilia because of it, I think that's what this song is about:

"Oh with strangers to impress so near
Old friends don't realize I'm here
I wish two drinks were always in me
I'd pretend I had the perfect ear"

He's so stressed out that he would always drink, hence "I wish two drinks were always in me." I think "I'd pretend I had the perfect ear" refers to how controlling he was when writing and recording songs because everything had to be perfect, so he'd insist that he had a perfect ear for music.

"Take me to the water
Make me understand
That I was wrong"

Pretty much apologizing to the band for what he's done.

"For me tomorrow is my first day
So please don't tempt me in the wrong way"

The first day that he's sober is his first day that he's alive. So don't "tempt him in the wrong way" by giving him more alcohol.

"Change your mind tonight
You belong to the city now
And you're closer now
I know
"You belong on the radio..."

I think he's contemplating quitting the band, but he "belongs to the city now" and "on the radio" so he writing and performing music is his calling.

"I swear I'll give it back tomorrow
But for now I think that I'll just borrow
All the words from that song
And all the chords from that other song
I heard yesterday"

I don't understand this lyric. Maybe it has to do with how Last Nite was criticized since the instrumental sounded just like another song (don't remember).

Also, I think the album title "First Impressions of the Earth" is an allusion to this song, since it's Julian Casablancas' first day being sober, and therefore he has a whole new outlook on life, and a new impression of the earth.

Pixies – The Navajo Know Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, I never really read the lyrics before, but I guess it is about high-rise construction and all that jazz.

I just remember seeing this thing on the history channel in which there were these huge deserts in which native americans (I believe) had etched very large patterns into the sand. They had constructed air balloons and royalty would fly up into the sky and look at the artwork etched into the sand. (I watched this a very long time ago, correct me since I'm probably very wrong)

So:

"the navajo know
a way of walking
quite high above the ground
fearless of looking down"

Made me think of that. Although the first line "Upon construction" and "skywalk" kind of gives it away that it's about high-rise construction.

Ok, I saw this song (along with many others) life at Lollapalooza in the summer of '05 and I must say it was absolutely terrible.

Kim Deal's voice was really off key sometimes and just not of quality, and she just couldn't play bass and sing at the same time, as the bass was off beat a LOT. I felt kind of bad for her, she obviously hadn't practiced in a long time.

Anyways, I really like it on Surfer Rosa. And yeah, it's gotta be about a white woman falling in love with a black man, interracial relationships:

"He's dark, but I want him."
"What a big, black mess."

Pixies – Dig For Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, pretty much both verses are the same, so I'll just quote the second verse.

"there is this old man
who spent so much of his life sleeping
that he is able to keep awake for the rest of his years"

So the old man wasted a good portion of his life not taking action and doing the things he wanted to do. So now he's making up for it.

"and i often ask him
"are you looking for the mother lode?"
huh?
no.
no my child, this is not my desire
and then he said

i'm digging for fire [4x]"

So the young man asks him if he's digging for money and gold and riches. And the old man tells him that he's looking for passion in his life that he's never had.

Pixies – Alec Eiffel Lyrics 18 years ago
"I dont think it means that. I think they are talking about a kid and his penis... because they mention phallic. look that word up. it could be about the eiffle tower though? "

To the person who said this, "phallic" means resembling a phallus (penis) SO when he says "He thought big and they called it a phallic" all Francis is saying is that people mocked the Eiffel Tower because it looked phallic.
