Death Cab for Cutie – For What Reason Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
"I will hold a candle up to you to singe your skin"
He's playing on the phrase about holding a candle up to someone which means something like having a great admiration for someone. But instead of this, he carries on with 'to singe your skin' so he's not complimenting her like you might first think, as he actually wants to hurt her.
I relate to this song so much right now! grrr. stupid boys. |

^Yeah it's the typical 'laddish' behaviour that is supposed to come with being all 'rude boy'. Love their music though. |

yeah i like the volume changes and theres also a bit where the guitar goes off key. Sounds good to me anyways. Doesn't DJ stand for something drug related too?!cant remember what. payback i take it refers to paying back a drug dealer for all the drugs they've got from them. |

Fugazi – Give Me the Cure Lyrics

^yeah thats true theres always some magic pill people want you to take to cure you of some 'disease'. The way that it says 'licked' 'feeling' and 'sucked' dying is really uneasy. Kind of disgusting but really powerful imagery. |

Fugazi – Provisional Lyrics

Yeah this song definitely sounds like its about trying to hide the atrocities that happened in the Nazi death camps or some kind of public denial about what happened to make it easier to deal with. I love this song. |

I love how the title to this song sounds so childlike and teenagery (?) but then its something that people always want to ask. I totally understand the frustration in this song. |

Fugazi – Suggestion Lyrics
|
I really like the lyrics to this song. I like the fact that Fugazi are suggesting that we should break the gender stereotype when he sings about men's 'interpretation of what it is to be a man' and 'we play the roles that they assigned us'. The fact that they're also singing the lyrics through a female perspective also breaks the gender stereotype. I love fugazi for making me think that maybe not all men are idiots after all! |

Sublime – Boss DJ Lyrics

^Yeah I have to agree with you guys saying its about his love for music thats why he wants to 'hear the same song twice'. It's sometimes about the heroin but not always. I think people just like to romanticise his heroin addiction which is a bit sad. |

I thought the words that burn like fire in his mouth were "Come on down reggae style,
wind up your body like a bass line wild,
drink and dance and we can turn it out." but he couldn't because he didnt want to freak her out or rush her |

José González – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
yeah i know that but surely if this is a website for commenting on the lyrical content rather than the sound of the song then shouldn't it be only in the joy division area so that a proper discussion in the context of the band that wrote it can take place...maybe i'm being really anal...i am aren't I...oh well..........
anyways, amazing lyrics, yeah.... |

José González – Hints Lyrics
|
this might be wrong but i've always thought of it as needing a 'hint' from God to know that 'we're on the right track' and that he really exists 'before we get tired' i.e. lose faith and give up?
I think the first stanza might be referring to all the people who have lost faith and turn to other things 'which allow them to sleep well' and the 'wrong path' is all the wrong places we look for hope or some way to get by...? I'm not an ardent Christian or anything but it's just what the lyrics suggest |

Julie Ruin – The Punk Singer Lyrics
|
This song came out after NOFX released 'Kill Rock Stars' on 'So long and thanks for all the shoes' so i think this song is partly a response to that and myabe all the other typical punk bands around, not just NOFX.
As someone mentioned above, Kathleen is pointing out the differences between their objectives maybe. Hence the title 'The punk singer' as she is subtley pointing out how typical Fat Mike is of a punk singer in a band.
If you read the lyrics to 'Kill Rock Stars' by NOFX it makes sense. Also, you can see a difference in their style of writing lyrics as Kathleen is a lot more subtle in her response to the song whereas Fat Mike resorts to cheap insults. |

Le Tigre – Sweetie Lyrics
|
I thought this song was about how she just wants to play music with her friends and deliver her messages about feminism etc but people keep putting her down hence the 'stake through our hearts' thing. Also the 'Why is it so wrong to be sure' part is about how she doesn't understand why people have a problem with her sticking by her beliefs. |

NOFX – Kill Rock Stars Lyrics
|
I think a lot of the songs written by Kathleen, not just Deceptacon, are to do with how she is misunderstood by people e.g. in 'sweetie' by le tigre. Fat Mike is one of those people who maybe doesn't get it which isnt his fault but this song, in my opinion is a really cheap shot at Kathleen and shows his lack of subtlety and skill at writing good lyrics. |
