My comment may have missed the mark with this song, although I do still see threads of dismissing origination theories - Matt tends to do albums that link up to a larger theme though, and your thoughts and a re-read caused me to reevaluate. Perhaps it's Matt's own existential realization about the so-called meaning of life. It's interesting the way he contrasts the indoors (as an anxiety-inducing prison "hard to breathe") with the outdoors (enjoyment/liberation, through symbolic sunshine). He's brooding in his apartment, distracted by sounds coming from the ceiling until they actually become a floor (a ground, so to speak, that enables his epiphany). Still, it seems even in the light or when drowning the sand in the tide, the memory seems to wash in again. Then Matt is plagued with new questions -- thoughts about origins. In forgetting his past he is still confronted with his existence and what it means. To me, the end seems exasperation at not knowing (but it could be a bit more shallow in that he's sitting in his apartment constantly wondering what another person is thinking... someone he misses and cares about... and he realizes that even though he can't actually drown that memory he has to start looking at it differently). All that said, we are our past and our future [we just don't always know what that means depending on what point in time we evaluate]. The song is a bit, as you said, throwing the past away; again, the thought of burying the sand and drowning it in the tide does suggest two things: i.) cyclical nature (does the sand really ever go away or does it become part of something else?), and ii.) origins - what could be more primitive than grains of earth/sand? To me, this song is about someone who is forced into the spotlight (maybe even a has-been) and how their relationships will never be the same. The fame and constant scrutiny will always interfere with meaningful relationships. You could also read it is as a damaged relationship, where one person cares more about the other and knows they will never be said s.o.'s only one. |

| I like your interpretation. Two things I'd change though, the "fall" refers to falling in love, and the walls coming down. Second, you only get scars AFTER wounds heal. The scars are temporary because time heals wounds, and he forgets about them as the love develops and past mistakes are forgiven. Love and life are like that sometimes -- back and forth, never really sure which way you're going or what's happening until you stop and reflect. What I like about this song is that it really captures those FIRST hopeful feelings at the start of something with this really wistful mood. I think FEBRUARY is also significant, though I'm not entirely sure about that theory. | |

First stanza, he's approaching someone he cares about perhaps in a way that others would perceive as ugly, lowly, or revolting ("bug beauty"). I think the "And your afternoon, and I've been puking," is actually reflecting how much this person moves him, and maybe she didn't always realize it. He's puking because he's so emotional/nervous. The next stanza, I see it as a person who lacks self-confidence ("I move so slow, a steady crushing hand") but actually realizes his own strength ("there's a company in my back", as in a military "company"). Next stanza - perhaps he hurt her without realizing it, but even in her sorrow she's beautiful to him ("your sorrow is sunshine"). Then he goes on to say that under all the words, it may be that they don't need to speak at all and get caught up in misunderstandings when they could acknowledge the simple truth in his eyes -- he cares for her ("just listen to my eyes"). I love the next line ("hissing radiator tunes") because to me it's complete sexual tension (hot, hissing radiator about to explode), with perhaps a little bit of anger or resentment towards the girl who may not receive his advances at first. Passionate, steamy sex is made of these things, especially if there's the I-love-you-so-much-I-could-die kind of tension. Again, he keeps doubting himself, but is trying so hard to find that "company" in his back and muster up the strength to get to her. Meanwhile, his "old radiant beauty" is slow to catch on to all of this and just how hard it is for him as he's trying to reach her. As a result, he curves his flight and maybe turns around, again caught up in the should I or shouldn't I. So, he realizes that this woman can crush him if she wants to, and he will die inside. However, there's a lingering hope of her remembering him because she may finally catch on and realize; all hope's not lost. Those last few lines he still goes back and forth with himself, but by the end he knows he will be strong and things will work out ("there's a company in my back"). The situation is classic unrequited love, but in this case it may work out in the end. |

| And, secondarily, I think he's saying, Why fight about faith and try to figure out what others believe and think when it comes to those sorts of issues? There can be unity, and enjoyment of natural things - the sun, the sand, the ocean... but religious people tend to be so aggressive in defending their faith or trying to convert others that they often miss the little things and how simple life can be. I also like that line "throwing out salt to watch it land" (paraphrasing). To me, it's a reference to the snow, but also to superstition (throwing salt over your shoulder, maybe?? or throwing salt on old wounds... hmm). Either way, I like that so much because he's suggesting (at least to me) that if you get so caught up in these superstitions that may or may not be real, you will likely miss the natural beauty that's right in front of your face (like the snow outside your window). Does anyone else see a layer of this song that dismisses traditional faith? I could go line by line with this, but it's late so for now I'm just going to throw it out there - disassociation with god and religious superstitions as a means of "finding out how we can stand." And that last line, "When it's over, why can't it be gone...?" (basically, he's saying when we die, why can't that be all there is?) But, underneath that message (dark for some), Matt's really saying we should just enjoy the sun, and the world around us, without trying so hard to figure out/guess when it comes to metaphysics/theology/lack thereof (i.e., life is short, maybe there's nothing after, so why waste our entire lives guessing about it when we could just live and enjoy). It's probably a little deeper in that, but that's basically all I've got right now. |

To me, this song is somewhat sarcastic towards religion. He says "in this age of grand illusion" to represent his true feelings, I think. The song appears to be a tribute to God, but as another person pointed out in the comments, David is not exactly humble in the song as one would be if they were really giving themselves to God. It also seems like he is trying to say all the things one is supposed to say and do all the things one is supposed to do to have faith, but it's all really tongue in cheek. I see the last part as a challenge, "Do I fit into your scheme of things?" If not, too bad, because I still care for myself. And the part about "Just because I believe doesn't mean I don't think," is an obvious contradiction and mockery of the blind faith position; if you believe in an illusion, are you really thinking? I also always thought he said at the beginning, "I don't need another chain," referring more to a lover than to a God. And he says, "you walked into my life," which to me suggests a human being, since God wouldn't "walk." The "sweet name" is a lover, and maybe they've had a quarrel about faith at some point. However, the religion he's really converted to is love, not Christianity or another organized religion. So yeah, although that's a jumbled up (and possibly wrong) interpretation, when I heard the song I always thought it was about thinking you needed faith and finding love instead. Oh yeah, and how has everyone missed, "It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself." Again, that's a loaded line. He's saying faith is safer than being on earth alone (which is the strange land), but at the same time he cares for himself too much to just recklessly throw his faith and belief into an illusion. And this is his "prayer," which intentionally challenges God's scheme of things. David has his own. The prayer and the word on a wing, while they would initially suggest some hopes floating up to heaven in a fragile way, to me always represented the feeling of love and commitment. All you can give are these fragile words, on a wing, because you feel like you are flying so high above everything when you're in love. And getting down on one knee, to me that's a marriage more than an actual prayer. I could just be seeing what I want to see; that happens from time to time. |

| Verbosity, I think you're half right. The speaker wishes she weren't getting married to this other person, but he knows that it's the right thing for her to do (maybe it's because he can't be with her fully due to his own circumstances). The last line really speaks to me, "she will be left lonely, but she will be right." It's getting married for the sake of it because it's "biologically time" and you've been with a person forever so it seems like the right thing to do. The speaker knows that her husband doesn't know how to make her happy when there's a crowd, and he can sense that she's lying when she says that she's so happy. I think that ties in with the song's title, "Happiness' Border"... she and this outside man were so close to happiness, but they can never truly cross the border and reach it. So the woman settles, and she's kind of like a trophy wife. Her new husband wants to parade her around, but she's so uneasy about all of it. It's not the life she wanted, but she drinks her wine and accepts it. I think also it may be a larger critique of marriage, and basically saying that people don't seem to do it for the right reasons. | |

I agree with Bryceing, although I would say that the song focuses a lot on the conflict between what we are told to be and what we would like to be. Uniqueness is often played up when we are young because our parents have aspirations that we will do wonderful and amazing things in a non-traditional sense. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. And sometimes we do great things, even though they may seem simple, boring and traditional. Regardless, I think sometimes it's easy to feel like the speaker in the song, where you just want to be a cog in the machine because it's simpler. You want to be like the man on the screen because that's what everyone else seems to like, or because you want to revert back to an old purity that seems to be lost today. But, I think this song focuses on the conflict between those two viewpoints, hence "I don't know who to believe." Then the song shifts, and the narrator decides it is better to take charge rather than sing the "helplessness blues." His choice seems to be in favor of conformity, or at least a preference for a simple life of hard-work and a monogamous, one true love type lifestyle. Ironically, in this day and age, the so-called conformist choice is actually harder to come by (IMO). When the speaker refers to the man on the screen, I envision that he's striving to be like the ideal often portrayed by men in old black-and-white films. There's also a nice undertone of the conflict between mechanized labor and good old-fashioned sweat and earth. The narrator and his love seem to strike a balance between these two, and a balance between conformity and uniqueness. Just some thoughts. I could develop them even more, but this isn't a thesis paper; besides, I've already written far too much. :-) |

So, to all those who claim this is a rip-off of "Heart-Shaped Box," do you not see the irony in that? The whole song is about writer's block/inadequacy/relationship woes, so how fitting that it would begin with a song that sounds a lot like a song that infiltrated the radio waves. And even more fitting that the song is "Heart-Shaped Box" given the lyrics. Perhaps this is Blake struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy in comparison to grunge artists like Nirvana, et. al who became huge despite all of their flaws. At the same time, I think it's a coming to terms for Blake that he's not cut out to be exactly like a stupid rip-off version of some grunge band that everyone else thinks is cool. Blake realizes that he's better than that in some way. The line, "they're playing love songs on the/your radio" is likely a reference to the mediocrity of mainstream radio, but also a clever reference to a girl. The "you keep fucking up my life" part is probably a broad reference to the knowledge of others' successes, his own feelings of inadequacy, and some chick who's making him feel even worse about himself. The other irony is that Cobain committed suicide, after living a drug-fueled life of depression. Blake often uses a suicide/depression theme in his songs, so maybe this is just another common thread between himself and Cobain, which makes it even harder to see the difference as to how one became "commercially" successful and the other (Blake) didn't necessarily. The girl referenced towards the end, like the rest of the world, is fickle and can't appreciate Blake and his talents for what they are. Frankly, I'm just throwing out some thoughts to fuck with you guys who are trying to make the Nirvana "connection" this negative thing. I really hope Blake wouldn't actually think that he's lesser than Nirvana. Lyrically, he dominates everything Nirvana ever wrote. |

Why can't this be about a teacher/student relationship that is also abusive? There's definitely a teacher thread in here, otherwise words like "he says your thoughts need form", "late night sessions", "lessons", "he makes corrections" wouldn't be necessary. It could be simply a reference to a master (who would be a teacher-like figure in this dominant/submissive relationship). However, I think it implicates an actual teacher because of the title. "Tenure" is what a teacher receives after so many years of teaching at particular place, whereby that teacher is given additional rights and protections against being fired (for more info, see: http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Tenure). I think this all ties in to the overall thread of the song. The girl has been in this relationship so long that she has a hard time breaking away from it, finding a reason to "fire" her lover (the teacher). The lessons are sex, and after each session the girl is twisting to his will even though she knows she should get away. Additionally, I think the line "every night he comes and goes again" means that he gets off and then leaves (possibly because they can't be together due to other issues - so they can only enjoy the sex together). This could be why she wants to get away, because she knows it can never be more. At the same time, he keeps pulling her back into his world. The line "if it isn't right, it isn't him" means that any other attempt at being with someone has left her longing for him. This could also be about a male/male teacher/student dom/sub relationship depending on the persuasion of the lyricist. |

| Every good artist knows that even if something HAS meaning, you don't tell people what it is because it ruins the universal quality of the music. Like all art forms, the beauty of GOOD music is that people can make personal connections with it. Dylan also did the "my song means nothing" bit on a few occasions, but more often than not he was being facetious/cryptic/ironic or deliberately trying to avoid telling his audience what to think. That said, I think it is wise to keep in mind that most songs have meaning - it's just a question of whether it's the artist's meaning or our own personal meaning. And, secondarily, Lennon may have subconsciously meant something when he wrote it that he's not even consciously aware of. In other words, I hear what Lennon's /saying/, and perhaps some songs really are nonsense strings of words meaning nothing, but I think with most of them (and with this song) there's some meaning, even if it's only personal to the listener. You can find several meanings in this particular song, but the overall meaning seems to be that there's no right or wrong meaning, because it's personal to you/subjective. | Although not every song is about drugs, Minus the Bear really likes to associate white w/ cocaine, probably because they like cocaine. So, the lyric is definitely "with a white lie we're both alive," but the white lie = a white line (i.e. cocaine). He's saying essentially that via cocaine they come alive. It's a white lie because it's not really them, it's the drug. Also the "alive" part is probably a reference to sexual attraction, the desire in them comes alive. The guy throughout the song is questioning whether the hook-up is real (possibly because the girl's so hot, and also because he's high). The "when we escape it's with a white lie" is not only about the escapism of cocaine (a fixation w/ MTB), but also about escaping from the party by lying about where they're going to their friends/others at the party. What I like about the song though is we never really know whether the chick he's with/seeing IS an illusion of the drug or if she's real and the speaker's just in disbelief/awe of his great luck in hooking up w/ her. The "her" could also be his relationship w/ cocaine, hence the lying/escaping to come alive. Great song. | |

It's like the person who's passed on has taken you to the "other side" with them. Either that or it's overtly about coming down off of drugs - you're high and hanging brightly as you hit the other side (that ephemeral high), but as you come down it cuts you like a knife when you have to face reality. To me, though, I think suicide seems to fit better. Perhaps it was a literal hanging (or maybe that's just a metaphor and it was actually a drug overdose that killed her friend/lover). The "game" is either drugs (you win the game by scoring again) or life (you win by getting out of it), and the "victory" is so very bittersweet. | |

It is possible that he's making the statement that he saw bright lights (which some people would view as God), but in reality it was just the shrooms, and human beings found him. So, I guess what I'm saying is I agree with all of you about the subject matter, just not in the way that some of you said. Aliens... maybe - that might fit in with the wreckage, although it seems kinda like he's just totally lost in the chaos of his mind and maybe that NONE of the things he's seeing are real. This would also fit if he saw God or something God-like in the trip because by mentioning the chemicals he's acknowledging that it is not real, it's just a delusion. | Maybe someone's already pointed this out, but The Who had a song called "La-la-la Lies," and I believe this song is an extension of that. Perhaps the title is a hidden message to whoever the song was written about. If you read the lyrics of The Who song, and listen to the melody, I'm positive there's a connection. | |
