Thursday – Tomorrow I'll Be You Lyrics 5 years ago
Geoff gives the meaning of this song in an interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jZMCT9CdB4

"Tomorrow I’ll be you is sort of a part two to a song called Jet Black New Year which came out on an earlier EP that we recorded, and basically this song is about when you do things to change who you are, to cover up who you are because…maybe you’re not happy with who you are or something has happened to you that makes you want to get rid of yourself, and 'Tomorrow I’ll Be You' is sort of about seeing the old you, the way that you were, the way that you were happy, and wanting to change back into yourself, wanting to become yourself again, because you feel totally unlike yourself as a person and...

I guess...

I guess there’s a whole thing at the end that says, 'on New Year’s Day we will change back to ourselves’ and has a recurring line about being cured...

I guess in a way it’s about being free of everything that keeps you from being yourself.”

_____

This song and Jet Black New Year Year will stick with me for as long as I live. The last line of the explanation really hits home for me. Hopefully one New Year's Day...

S – Untitled Lyrics 7 years ago
The lyrics here are incorrectly attributed to a completely different band and song (Silverchair - Untitled) - Songmeanings won't let me edit them due to "copyright requirements" by Silverchair, obviously not the same as S (Jenn Ghetto) so I'll post the lyrics as a comment instead.

Transcribed by ear. Only the final verse with the overlapping vocals may not be entirely accurate. Everything else is quite audible.
------------

If you can take the past and throw it all back at me
If you can twist it up and wrap it all around me
It's hard for me to think that you hate me for who I am
It's hard for me to take that you who I am will hurt you

I miss you all the time you all the time, although you'll never know it
And all of this is yours and I just wish you'd own it
And you will never trust how much I say I love you
And you can twist this up and turn it all around you

And this is all I got
So take it if you want it
It will never be enough
You're always disappointed
And this is all I got
It's here for you to take it
You're ripping at my heart
See if you can break it

You are the only one
You look at me, you turn your back...
You're the only one...
I wish you'd let it be forever
You are the only one
I wish you'd let it be forever.

You are the only one.

Thursday – Stolen Guitar Lyrics 8 years ago
Just an FYI:
This demo is actually called "Stolen Guitars," not "Stolen Guitar" but it wouldn't let me change the title.

I also filled in the missing lyrics.

If anyone is curious as to where/when/how this originated, it was sent out in a mailing list to people who had pre-ordered the Thursday/Envy split back in October of 2008 as a consolation for the pressing getting pushed back.

Here's the e-mail, which includes a (still working) download link and an explanation about the song

"Hello,

Due to circumstances beyond our control the plant that is pressing the vinyl ran into an unforeseen problem that is causing the vinyl for our latest EP split with Envy to ship out late. We are very sorry about this and promise to get it out to you as close to release date as possible.

We want to give you something to thank you for your patience and are sending you a never before released Thursday Demo.

You can download it here: http://go.thesyn.com/audio/stolen-guitars.mp3

I've been making a lot of bedroom recordings lately. Whenever I hear about anything that really gets me thinking, I record a quick version of it so I don't forget. This one will probably never be developed beyond this. I was listening to a lot of Broken Social Scene and Cloud Cult around the time I made this and you can hear people and cars going by out my window. Thanks for supporting us.

See you soon,

Geoff"

Hope that helps :)

Old Gray – Instrumental Lyrics 10 years ago
The final track on Old Gray's 2011 EP "Do I Dare Disturb the Universe" is titled "Instrumental" and does not feature vocals or lyrics by the band but does sample the infamous quote from the classic 1976 movie "Network" throughout the song. Since it's the closing track of the album and the quote seems to be of great importance I believe that merited editing the lyrics of "Instrumental" to reflect the quote as it appears in the song.

By the way, you can watch the video clip from the movie containing the full quote here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGiX5tbLKiY

Thursday – A Hole In The World Lyrics 14 years ago
The comment by Someday on the first page back in 2002 is the most accurate of these, I believe. To me it also symbolizes the end of an abusive relationship but still loving the person after it's over. It can certainly be interpreted in different ways by different people in different situations, though.

"The exit sign offers no light to see by"
The end of the relationship offers no new perspective, no light, no hope, no positivity because of how bleak things seem without that person anymore.

"Can we cast our shadows alone in the dark?"
This could mean one of two things, I think. First, if you take "cast our shadows" literally, it means there's no light to shine on you and nothing to make you stand out when you're "alone in the dark." Second, I think if you take "cast" in this sense to mean to throw off or away (i.e. "he cast off the blanket") it doesn't mean to cast shadows in the traditional sense but rather to rid yourself of your shadows...the shadows in this case likely being the dark aspects of the ended relationship that still hang with you, and when you're by yourself in a dark place it's hard to lose those feelings, thoughts and memories when you're surrounded by them.

"I can't see without you"
This one is more or less self-explanatory. Without your partner, you can't see where you're going in life, you can't see the point, you can't see any light or hope and so on.

"Standing at the margin's edge to see where the daybreak ends
You can find compassion here, but the page turns too fast"

Writing is used as a metaphor here much like photography is used as a metaphor later in the song. Referencing forms of expression to convey your own form of expression...pretty amazing lyricism. Anyway, I believe that the first lyric refers to coming to the very "edge" of the relationship, just before it ends, and seeing that the love, the affection, the brightness and joy of the initial connection (aka "the daybreak") is all disappearing. There was compassion there, but it was fleeting and gone too fast, leaving you yearning for it again.

"Giving up on hope, living without love, and we still type black lines"
Again, I believe this uses writing as a metaphor. Basically meaning that the page has turned but you've got to keep writing new lines anyway...the chapter full of love and hope is over, but the story goes on. "When the world comes crashing down, part with it, start again" conveys the same message.

The last line (the screamed part at the end) is definitely "love is love," repeated over and over. You can hear this more clearly in the acoustic version.

I can definitely see how people interpret these lyrics as being about life in general. Personally I think that the lines "I can't see without you" and "giving up on hope, living without love" are what confirms it's about the end of a relationship and the immediate bleak aftermath, though. As someone who is both a writer and photographer AND has personally been in the situation conveyed in these lyrics and knows firsthand how devastating it can be, I definitely feel a strong connection to this song. Truly amazing music.

Glassjaw – Pink Roses Lyrics 14 years ago
Man, I've been listening to this song for 8 years and I always thought the lyric was:

"I want to drink you,
stab you,
fuck you and film you all night"

Half the lyric sites have different lyrics for this song though so who knows. I really don't think the scream after "stab you/scare you" is saying "boo" though. I think it's just a scream. If it sounds like anything, to me it sounds like "been a while" but that makes no sense.

Anyway, such a good song. That chorus never gets old.

I have a video of them playing this song in Troy, New York on November 3rd (here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyYJs6HMQAw) and this is what Geoff said during its introduction:

"We're going to play a new one...it's about false culture. Don't believe people when they tell you what you're supposed to like, 'cause all the shit that's out there that's mass-produced and pushed down your throats is usually garbage. Speak for yourself. This one's called Dead Songs."

Thursday – Ladies And Gentlemen: My Brother, The Failure (with Tim Kasher) Lyrics 16 years ago
I kind of agree with deception on this, although Thursday are NOT over, and certainly not because of one song.
It is a little too literal, though...one thing about Geoff's lyrics is that they're always poetic and metaphorical, so that people can interpret and relate to them in their own way. But with this song, it's basically "My brother is a freeloading douchebag and I hate him."
Whether Geoff actually has a brother like this or is just using a metaphorical brother to represent a friend with these issues, it's still far too specific.
Lyrics like "passed out on pills in a stranger's room," "I need fifty bucks to pay off some old debts," "His girlfriend, she loves him too," and "flies down the stairs past that guy from that band" are all such literal and un-Thursday-esque lyrics, it's just really strange to hear. I'm hoping this will be a one time thing, though, and that this will remain their only song like this.

Daïtro – Des Visages Et Des Muscles (Faces and Muscles) Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is from the "This Is Your Life" 2004 comp put out by Apemustnotkillape, which is where I got these lyrics from. The last line of this song is in english in the song itself, but in French it's "Nous allons nulle part et personne ne s'en plaint."
The first line is re-used in the song "Se Noyer, S'oublier, Regarder Partir" and this song seems to be along similar lines as that one, in term of meaning.
I believe "to accept to be taken" is a metaphor for accepting death, and the next two lines seem to be about death/aging and then rebirth and resurrection. I could be wrong, though.

Genghis Tron – Arms Lyrics 16 years ago
One thing I've always wondered about Genghis Tron lyrics, especially on the Cloak of Love album...do they actually mean anything, or are they just random words and sentences that sound good with the song? Because I'm really not getting a lot of meaning from lyrics like "arms like these flail when our songs hit a desert bride." Maybe I'm just missing a subtle message, though.
Either way, this band makes some incredible music.

On The Might Of Princes – For Meg Lyrics 16 years ago
Such a great song. I can't really follow along with these lyrics, though.
At the beginning (after the sample and before the 'i'll scream it...' part) it sounds like he's singing:

"hold this for you, hold you close, keep you alive"

and not "this is for you, to hold you close, to keep you close to my heart."
Then after the "i'll scream it..." chant:

"split you open, to keep you warm inside your arms"

and from there (3:00) to about 3:25 I can't really hear any of the lyrics written here being screamed/sung until at 3:25:

"someone becomes everyone, someone becomes everywhere...to help you sleep (to help me sleep), keep me alive (keep you alive), find hope in a smile...against all demons, someone becomes everyone, someone becomes everywhere.

Where are you, where you want to be
Where are you, where you want to be."

Anyway, the lyrics are great, even if some of them don't seem to be in the song.
Does anyone know the words between 3:00 and 3:25, though? They're screamed so passionately, it makes me really want to know what they are :/

I'm pretty sure this song is about the feelings of someone whose lover left them. He may be alive and breathing, but he feels dead inside, drained of all hope and strength from losing the one he loved. He doesn't want to accept the fact that it's over, and he can't just forget about it, but he still realizes, painfully, that it's over, that he can't change that, and that he has to live with that fact.

Underoath – The Best Of Me Lyrics 16 years ago
"I never stopped believing in you and me
Your leaving never changed things
I've been here for too long to just walk away."

It seems pretty clear to me what this song is about...two people are together, in love, and then one of them leaves the other one. Whether "leaving" means ending the relationship and moving on or dying or something else, it's still leaving the other person alone. And the other person won't, or can't, move on from it. They can't "just walk away," and they can't stop believing in that relationship, in that love, no matter how long the other person has been gone for.
I've personally been going through this for what seems like forever now, and I can definitely relate...it doesn't get easier with time. Love is love, and when you've lost it, you're never really whole again until the one you loved comes back.

Incredible song. They definitely didn't take a media-friendly route with this new album, unlike what 99% of the other bands out there are doing with their new material these days. Instead of turning into another band with 3 minute verse-chorus-verse-chorus songs made for MTV and MySpace, they've really done the exact opposite by having each song be completely unadulterated, wild brilliance. When you add all the song lengths on Colors up and average them, the average song length is still over 8 minutes long. So definite props to them for creating yet another masterpiece of an album.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You – If These Bullets Could Talk Lyrics 16 years ago
This is the only song on the album that I can't really relate to the whole "Albert Fish concept" that many people believe the whole album is about.

And the talking...the first part is definitely:
"As they plan on burying your lifeless body
I'll be sure to shatter the tombstone set in place.
There's nothing more I'd rather see than you chasing bullets as you fall into a tub."

It's definitely "tub," not tunnel, because he says it in one syllable and there's a BUH sound at the end.

After that I hear
something something "chemicals" something something "torn up/off" something something something "cause you're gone...you're gone...you're gone."

I don't hear "heart goes comatose" in there anywhere...I definitely hear "chemicals" though.
And it's "you're gone...you're gone" at the end, not "a gun...a gun." You can clearly hear the "you're" and the "awn" part of "gone."

The Number Twelve Looks Like You – Blue Dress Lyrics 16 years ago
I said this in the comments for the Civeta Dei lyrics, and I'll say it again here...it's believed that this album (Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses) is a concept album about the serial killer/cannibal Albert Fish, particularly about the little girl he killed and ate.
This song might be about the funeral for that little girl...the girl's mother is mentioned and "to get back at your bastards lust" could well be about Albert Fish and how he lusted after the little girl that he killed.

...Or these song lyrics could just be a fancy way of writing about an ordinary funeral.

submissions
The Number Twelve Looks Like You – Civeta Dei Lyrics 16 years ago
It's been said that the whole album is a concept album about the serial killer/cannibal Albert Fish. Whether that's true for this song, I'm not sure.

I think this song is about self-mutilation and blood, personally.

-"pick up this doll and watch the girl dream.
cups spill what holds, what holds, what holds tommorrow."
-----
--The song seems to be about a little girl and the obvious troubles she's going through. The "cups spill what holds tomorrow" lyric makes me think of blood; blood definitely holds tomorrow, the future, because it's what's keeping us all alive to make it to tomorrow.

-"clenching the fist, raising the brow.
as glass enters the vein."
-----
--Glass entering the vein, spilling blood.

-"justice shines in her dark eyes.
as an amber sky drips a tear upon a sunset."
-----
--some people cut themselves as self-punishment, because they feel they have done something wrong and deserve retribution for it...so "justice shines in her dark eyes" could be about the justice she thinks she's bringing to herself as she cuts. The "amber sky drops a tear upon a sunset" line could just be a random cool-sounding line to throw in there, or it could be talking about spilling blood once again (the dripping tear being blood).

-"this is seraplis dream. ten crowns drop.
parchment paper crumbles, when the curtain falls."
-----
--"seraplis" is a typo. Yes, even in the album booklet. The real lyric is "This is Seraph's dream." As it has already been said, Seraph is an angel often represented as a child...bringing us back to "pick up this doll and watch the girl dream."

-"shade this tribulation in pastels
silk feelings hurt
the river holds the color you describe as love."
-----
--"Shade this tribulation in pastels" is basically saying the album title in a different way; "Put on your rosy red glasses." A tribulation is an instance or event of grief and trouble, and "shading it in pastels" would be ignoring it or making it seem less grievous than it really is...i.e. the phrase, "wearing rosy colored glasses." And again, the color red (blood) is brought up.
"Silk feelings hurt" also seems to be about the same thing...even when you're trying to wear rosy-red glasses and keep a view of optimism, those "silk feelings" still hurt.
"The river holds the color you describe as love." The color of love is red. I believe that "the red river" they're talking about here is the stream of blood pouring out of the young girl, once again.

So overall, blood and the color red (although neither are directly referenced) seem to be what this song is about. Particularly a young girl's blood.
This could either be about the young girl's self-mutilation/suicide or once again it could be talking about the young girl that Albert Fish killed and ate. An example to support the second theory would be that "cups" are what's spilling blood...i.e. Albert Fish filled cups with her blood to drink, since he was a cannibal. But either way, self-mutilation or murder, blood would certainly be shed in either case.
One thing I think this song is NOT, however, is meaningless and random, as With_Teeth suggested.

And xcalifornicationx; "But I mean, if you're just screaming as hard and loud as possible do the lyrics really matter?"
Yes, they do matter. The entire point of screaming rather than singing is to convey an entirely different level of emotion about something, and if the screams are just random words that have no meaning, the music is essentially pointless. And while there are plenty of bands that scream about nothing particular/important/meaningful, I'm positive that #12 is not one of them.

I always thought this song was using the analogy of a play to talk about non-conformity and rebelling against the standard way of life...
People are generally expected to live a certain way of life (standard verse and chorus / your script / the stage is set / memorize the soundtrack to your racket / everything written down is an act) and this song is talking about breaking that pattern of living a customary, orthodox life and living a different way...i.e. "deviating from the script" (young hearts don't always beat to standard verse & chorus / we'll deviate from your script / we've plotted our escape / we refuse to memorize).

I don't know, maybe I'm way off with that interpretation, but that's always what this song/these lyrics have meant to me.
