I agree that this is a very beautiful song, her voice is awesome and these lyrics are so sad. I think that you could be right, Gracefire, from the lines "an empty heart, torn apart, left on an icy grave," that her love died, but it could even just be that their love is dead, that he left her. Maybe she's forgiven him for going, but still "the craving never fades."

I think the song is about a love that is over, a guy who was left by his girl when she got famous. I think he helped her get to the top, and then she fell in with a different crowd and left him behind. He is sitting around, laying around, standing around, whatever else thinking about her...when someone that you love has left you, it's all you can think about. I've personally had the experience of thinking about a lost love and touching myself, maybe it's comforting, and the thought of that person can still be very erotic, even if they are gone to you. I don't think that it has to be about love or masturbation, as if the two are worlds apart. Love can inspire masturbation. And masturbation is great. Lucky Luke, your interpretation is very interesting. I never saw it that way, but I could. Is that your very own personal interpretation?

I have to agree with the many before me that this song is the most beautiful song of despair...what beautiful lines, and such a haunting tone of loneliness in his voice. I love "true love waits in haunted attics" and "I'm not livin', I'm just killin' time" the most. I don't think there is anything more painful than unrequited love.

I really thought that he was saying "darling it hurts me," but after I saw these postings I listened to it again and he is saying "use me, darling use me." I took it that she came from a poor country, and is likely still on the bottom. I think that the vanilla milkshake is a great way the get the color white in there again, but it's also talking about her going out with white boys who probably buy her things and make her feel good about herself. She in turn gives them what they want.

I love this song because of its playful approach to death...the song is bouncy, upbeat, her voice on those, "Ooo's" is excellent. I love to sing this song, and the feel is not one of sadness or darkness really, just a light little song about death.

When I first heard this song I found that I related to it powerfully. When something like a miscarriage happens, you have to concede that life is way beyond your control, though you may have thought you were very strong. And of course it brings home the reality of the unfairness of life, and that brings a lot of people to doubt of God. She probably thought about whether or not she wanted to be alive. The video takes it a bit further, you have a woman who is in danger of being murdered, and has to find that spark inside, and that will to get herself out alive. Because whether or not she's thought about ending it, she didn't really mean it. She wants to live. Has anybody seen the video who has a comment about the blond twin girls who didn't help her at the end? Were they just too scared, or did it mean something more?

I had the same experience of listening to this song and finding myself in tears. She had an excellent story to work with in this poem, I am so moved by a woman who would kill herself to give her love a chance, and I felt wrenched when they shot him on the highway, "down like a dog on the highway." He was everything to her, worth her life, and yet to the king's men he was hardly even human. Just someone to be disposed of. Story is tragic, but I can't help but feel a little longing for that kind of devotion, what a powerful love.

I love this song, it is so dark and beautiful. A young woman is drowned by her older sister, pushed into the water where she is weighted down by her heavy gown. Younger asks older to help, but older says she'll only do it if she can have the youngers true love. The girl dies, and becomes a swan, a common symbol of death in those times. The swan/girl is then made into a harp, which is taken into her father's hall, where it sings alone to tell her family how she died. I love the sound of the guitars in this, it just adds a little extra intensity somehow.

I think that this song is about disbelief in love...she starts out talking about how it seems hard to love her family, which I can really relate to sometimes. "compared to some I've been around/but I really tried so hard" I think means she was looking for real love, and met a lot of men who weren't right, but she hasn't yet found it, and now realizes that it was a lie to think that she could find love if she holds on..."it's the devil I love/ and that's as funny as real love/ and that's as real as true love" I think she's got the right idea. Love. Funny.

But now she is jaded (my heart is green) about love, she doesn't seem to feel it the same way anymore. The friend says that she doesn't care if she ever finds someone to spend forever with, that she is okay with having a lot of relationships that are hot and consuming...that teenage feeling. This comforts the speaker, but she still wonders if maybe there aren't too many skeletons in the closet to ever find lasting love...
