Tokyo Police Club – Nature of the Experiment Lyrics

When my buddy and I went to their concert, we were surprised to see that the guy who sings "it's not the way my mother talks" behind the chorus was, in fact, a guy. Oh, well. They rock anyway. |

Metallica – Frantic Lyrics

"My lifestyle determines my deathstyle?" What kind of crappy, angsty 4th grader lyric is that? That seems like the sort of line I'd think was really clever if I wrote it when I was ten.
Seriously, I have no interest in joining this anti-Metallica flame war, because I haven't listened to them enough to judge, but what an atrocious lyric. Even you hardcore fans have to admit that much. |

of Montreal – Labyrinthian Pomp Lyrics

This song is a shot at Dan Bejar (Destroyer), and nobody can convince me otherwise. The only two words that come to my head to describe Bejar's lyrics (as Destroyer, anyway; he's good with the New Pornographers) are labyrinthian and pompous. |

Barenaked Ladies – Wind It Up Lyrics

"Throw you mobile phone"...that seems a bit risky. Remember how this band used to get macaroni hurled at them from the audience? What if people take this lyric literally? |

Dave Matthews Band – Break Free Lyrics

Musically this song's okay, and the jam at the end is fun, but come on, the lyrics suck. It's like somebody's giving this man stupid pills or something. What happened? |

Islands – Humans Lyrics

I'm with Wrapid. Unicorns were fine, but Islands are incredible. I love this song, especially the line "I'm not just their leader/I'm also one of them." Also, adding "We Built This City" to all of that apocalyptic imagery? Beautiful! |

Pavement – Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17 Lyrics

I think this song is at least partially about contemplating suicide. The heavy coat lines seem to reference the way that Virginia Woolfe drowned herself. However, the singer still might lose the coat and come back. |

50 Cent – Patiently Waiting (Feat. Eminem) Lyrics
| 18 years ago

Eminem's part rocks, but 50s flow is so terrible that I want to light myself on fire. "I split yo lip, You lookin like them Michael Jack-Son Jackets, with all them zippers"? Jeez. Why don't you just shoot me nine times right now... |

The Vanity Project – So Young, So Wrong, So Long Lyrics
| 18 years ago

I can't get enough of this song! I love the Leonard Cohen shout out with the "grocer of despair" line.
Anyway, I think it's about a washed up artist dealing with his star power fading. He's dealing with a younger artist who is stealing the spotlight from him. |

Bruce Springsteen – Youngstown Lyrics

I agree with STL Beatles Fan on the Hitler line. However, I prefer the accoustic version to the electric, though both are amazing. I think the accoustic version makes the song beautifully haunting. You can't get it out of your head. |

Bruce Springsteen – Long Time Comin' Lyrics

The last verse never really got to me until I actually read it, as opposed to just listening to it. I have goosebumps all over now. Wow. Springsteen is simply the greatest songwriter of his generation. |

Johnny Cash – Cocaine Blues Lyrics

lol at chobba111.
Anyway, I love this song. It's tone is so defiant. Even if it has a wholesome moral at the end, he's in no way apologetic.
Also, the crowd noise on Folsom Prison adds so much to the feel of the song. |

Europe – The Final Countdown Lyrics

When I was on the subway, this really corny magician started doing a show right in the car. I couldn't help myself. I had to turn my iPod right to this song. I love you GOB! |

The Vanity Project – Wilted Rose Lyrics

I think this another song about the question of Quebec breaking away from Canada, a la "You Will Be Waiting" by BnL. The "They built a wall" part could refer to the famous "Wall of shame" that they built in Quebec to keep Canadians away from the Summit of the Americas in 2001. That, along with "Can it be time to leave" lead me to think it's abour Quebec.
Is there some significance to the Rose having to do with Quebec? |

Barenaked Ladies – Hidden Sun Lyrics

This is one of my favorite BnL songs. Why don't they let Kevin sing more?
Anyway, this song represents a transition in Kevin's life. He nearly died of Lukemia, and recorded an amazingly depressing album, H-Wing, while he was very sick. This song, on the other hand, is full of hope and beauty. It is a stunning song. |

Art Brut – Bang Bang Rock & Roll Lyrics
|
I love this song, especially about the part about the Velvet Underground. When he says "I can't stand that sound the second time around, once is enough!", I think he's taking a well-needed shot at bands like The Strokes who cite the Velvet Underground as influences as use that as an excuse for making mediocre music.
I love Art Brut. Witty bastards! |
