Beck – Loser Lyrics 15 years ago
Really, I just think Beck is saying, in his own twisted way, that he's a social outcast and that if it annoys people so much, then why don't they get rid of him, naming the most extreme manner possible as an injection of some dark humor.

Beck wrote this in 1992 when he was homeless and working a mimimum wage job. Supposedly, when he was rapping over the guitar loop, he was trying to emulate Chuck D of Public Enemy, and after listening to the results, was incredibly embarrassed. He didn't even want to release it until Bong Load, the indie label he was on, convinced him to do so. And from there, the Beck Hansen we all know and love emerged.

Funny enough, I knew the first line in the chorus was Spanish, but I heard the last word as "permedo", and when I asked my dad (who knows Spanish well enough) what it meant, he had no idea until I played the song for him, to which he responded, "The word is actually 'perdedor', which is Spanish for 'loser'. He's just saying the second line of the chorus in Spanish."

GWAR – Slaughterama Lyrics 15 years ago
Just a little nitpick:

Good thing I was such an expert shot with the National Guard back in Penn State.

It's actually Kent State, not Penn State. They're referring to an incident that happened when the US was fighting the Vietnam War when National Guard soldiers opened fire on student protesters and ended up killing four students.

Very wrong. And yet I laughed my ass off at that line.

Peter Gabriel – Red Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
The liner notes of the remastered edition of So mention that the "red rain" referred to in this song is acid rain, which is caused by chemical pollution. And acid rain is theorized to be one of the results of widespread nuclear fallout.

The Police – Invisible Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
For those who disagree about this song being about Northern Ireland, I present this:

"I don't want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an Armalite"

For those not familiar: an Armalite is an assault rifle which gained prominence because of the IRA's extensive use of it.

The idea of the invisible sun being God actually sounds plausible to me, since the conflict in Northern Ireland had religious reasons (Catholics vs. Protestants). To me, it's like the person from whose perspective Sting is singing from is saying in the chorus "I don't buy that God hates Catholics or Protestants. God is all-loving and doesn't care how you worship him."

Just my two cents.

Reggie and the Full Effect – G Lyrics 15 years ago
"This is how to build a better enemy
We work together and we get it done
I'm not exactly who I used to be
So shut your mouth or else you're fucking gone"

This right here is the goddamn utter truth for relationships that end with mutual hatred between both parties involved. You work on each other's nerves until you reach the point where you become "good friends, better enemies".

Queensrÿche – Revolution Calling Lyrics 16 years ago
The song actually fits into the story told in the Operation: Mindcrime album. BodomsChild is not far off though, since this song also doubles as social commentary. Even though it's been 20 years (I think) since the album has been released, the song is still incredibly relevant. Hell, just change the word "Communist" to "Islamist" and it's completely relevant to today's world.

Rollins Band – Up For It Lyrics 16 years ago
Sad that no one has commented on this song. It's a great multi-genre blend and was what got me into Rollins Band.

Anyways, the way I see it, Rollins is telling you to go out and do something to change your life for the better. Just staying static won't get you anywhere, and you need at times to take a chance and hope it brings you a rewarding experience. Though he's also saying that you shouldn't take a random risk and that the risks you take to make yourself better should be thought about long and hard. And honestly, it's the truth. Eventually you'll have to risk something to get somewhere, but if you think about it and get all the information you need, you'll end up making good choices to get ahead.

Iron Maiden – For the Greater Good of God Lyrics 17 years ago
Honestly I think it's a bit of both. Yes, religion has caused wars and endless suffering. The leaders of various religions have all declared their way the one true way, and that all other ways are evil and must be supressed at all costs. I don't exactly think that religion per se has a lot to answer for, but that the leaders of the religions are the ones that have explaining to do. Most of what we know about religion comes from secondary sources, who have in the past twisted and bastardized teachings to the point that what is taught is in direct conflict with what was originally said. The last lines of the song:

He gave his life for us
He fell upon the cross
To die for all of those
who never mourn his loss
It wasn’t meant for us
to feel the pain again
Tell me why, tell me why

Are the most telling sign that this song doesn't condemn religion. It condemns those who twist it so that the common person does what the leaders want. Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure that when Jesus Christ was on Earth, he wasn't intending for Crusades to be fought in his name.

Type O Negative – I Like Goils Lyrics 17 years ago
Type O Negative likes to make fun of their local dialect (they're from the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn). As was previously stated, "goils" is the Bensonhurst pronunciation of "girls." Another time they poke fun is on their earlier albums, when they credit the harmonies to the "Bensonhoist Lesbian Women's Choir." Bensonhoist, obviously, is how the locals there pronounce "Bensonhurst".

Dead Kennedys – Short Songs Lyrics 18 years ago
Punk rockers and punk fans are often critical of progressive rock. Punks feel that prog is overblown and pompous. People into prog rock on the other hand feel that punk is music for idiots because the basis of punk rock is admittedly simplistic. When punk rose to the forefront of music in the 70s, they bashed the hell out of prog. Some (like Roger Waters of Pink Floyd) changed around their sound to gain credibility with punks (hence why The Wall has more guitar parts than most Floyd albums). Others just bashed punk back. This song is a pretty direct diss of prog, with Jello's reference to Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman and his stated preference of short songs (since some prog songs can go over 20 minutes).

Metallica – Orion Lyrics 18 years ago
Here's my take.

Basically, the entire Master of Puppets album is about the things that control humanity, such as anger (Battery), addiction (Master of Puppets), religion (Leper Messiah), etc. This was named Orion because in mythology, Orion became a puppet of the gods after he chose to follow Artemis. Apollo was jealous of Artemis' new follower, and eventually, Artemis ended up killing Orion because of Apollo's trickery. Thus, Orion never had control of his destiny, and his fate was entirely in the hands of the gods. Because the album is about those things which control humanity, Orion was a perfectly appropriate title for this instrumental. Perhaps the explanation of the spaced out nature of one of the parts played a factor as well. But that's my take on it.

Bruce Springsteen – Jungleland Lyrics 18 years ago
I just need to ask you guys something. What exactly happens at the end? I know what this song is about, but I have no clue as to what happens to the Magic Rat in the end. Does he crash in the tunnels? Does he get caught by the cops? I honestly have no clue, because the ending is so unclear.

The Stooges – I Wanna Be Your Dog Lyrics 18 years ago
In my mind, this song is one of the dumbest and smartest songs ever written. Here's why I say that.

The dumb part is that on the face of it, it seems like the guy singing the song is basically saying that he'll be a girl's obedient sex toy and that he'll do whatever he's asked to do. Much like a loyal dog. However, Iggy is actually being ironic with this. The Stooges always sang about the dark side of things like drugs and sex. He's basically showing how sex can be demeaning to men because in a lot of cases, men will simply throw away their dignity and submit themselves to the whims and desires of the woman they like, who most likely is interested only in screwing. So on its face, this is a dumb song, but when you realize that Iggy is being ironic, it becomes a very clever tune. Thus, this song is both dumb and smart at the same time. So he's saying, "Yeah, I'll obey you like a dog" to a woman and "Don't lose your dignity over sex" to you at the same time.
