So simple yet so elegant and true. The "evening of the day" is not literal.......this person telling the story is on in years of their life. "Smiling faces I can can see, but not for me" represents the attitude toward the aged and so forth. But the real clincher is "doing things I used to do, they think are new". this line says it all so simply. Chilhood innocence, once you havelost it you can never get it back. |

Joni is actually from Canada which is why so many people can relate to this song. California represented freedon to many people who moved here. It's Joni's vision of being in strange places with strange faces. For many of us the move to the west coast represents warmth, freedom and new opportunities. When visiting my family I always start to listen to this song about 3/4 of the way through my trip......because "california...i'm coming home" |
