Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes this is an great song, great lyrics and the musical tone, synths and guitars are excellent.
No, I dont think this song is about homosexuality, although one of those posts was more of a 'troll' post and did make me laugh.

To me this song is about human greed, the desire for power and control, on an individual to national/worldwide level. It exists in all of us, to varying degrees. There are probably some people with no power drive, possible some type of autistic.

Whats worst about this scenario is that the people who generally do get the power(socialized psychopaths) obviously influence the whole enviroment to their ways, making your average human being even more grasping, making life more of a rat race...

heres my lyrical interpretation:

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back

-the fact that we are thrust into life, and no matter what regrets or things we wouldve liked to be different, we are stuck with what we have in the present.

Even while we sleep
We will find you acting on your best behavior

-imo, this is just that the forces of social control/conformity are so strong, that even in our dream state/subconscious
we will find our dreams influenced by social norms and values.

Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

-This is possibly idealizing mother nature, and saying the 'dog eat dog' mentality is against nature. And in some ways it is for human beings, as we have consciousness. It also a criticism of the Military Industrial Complex, corporatism and how they are literally destroying the environment in the name of greed and convienince/pleasure.

It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

-This verse is about self determination, and taking resposibility for your life. I think it also goes into ethics and morality, and mortality, and possibly the afterlife.

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

-Not sure, I thought this may relate to the afterlife and hell. Because of choosing to have some ethics in life, "we've almost made it" while others who were greedy and evil- "so sad they had to fade it" and deal with whatever consequences there may be in the afterlife.

I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world

-This is about humanity being a bunch of ambivalent lemmings, unable to take a stand, or even be honest with themselves.

Say that you'll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world

-Im guessing this has to do with sales/peer pressure, keeping up with the joneses, and the headline having to do with propaganda and media spinning.

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

This again goes to the worldly things that people become so obsessed with in life, freedom to do whatever they want, and pleasure. But "nothing lasts forever" and i believe there is a hint of a belief in a afterlife where these worldly/material things are meaningless. Not to mention they already are more meaningless than alot of people caught up in the rat race realize.

Ratt – Body Talk Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah this has that cool glam metal, almost pop sound. actually this riff sounds a bit like a van halen song, maybe 'house of pain'... but easily different enough.
pearcy has a really cool voice too.

The Cars – Bye Bye Love Lyrics 16 years ago
also wanted to add, more i think about it, it could be about "love" itself, romantic love.
for example "it's an orangey sky" is talking about stereotypical romantic sunsets

Ratt – Back For More Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah this is a great song.
i think it could be about a pimp, or 'hotshot' player type.
the first verse is from the pimps viewpoint
the second verse is about the pimp from an outsiders viewpoint.
Or it also could be referring to Satan/Devil, 'Lord of the world', materialism, and womens love of these things- "girl, you know you're mine"

Black Sabbath – Tomorrow's Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great, underrated Sabbath song. Awesome drumbeat and guitar riff.
Im guessing its about a relationship problem. It could also be talking to God, and its about suicide,or a passive wish for death, and losing faith.
Also, i thought the last verse is "this time im going to have the star part"- listen to it, maybe some Crowleyesque allusion.

Ratt – Lay It Down Lyrics 16 years ago
Awesome guitar riff on this song. Ratt had some excellent musicians and a very good singer.

But the lyrics are surprisingly deep and interesting:

I know you don't really know me
I know you don't really care to see me
I'm into total affection

"Not being scared if you never please me"

This verse contradicts itself, hes into total affection but he doesnt cared about being pleased himself. This whole song is a comment on womens loopiness, that in many ways they just want sex too, deep down, but have a million games and issues. She doesnt want to reallyknow him, she wants bs. He has to act like hes into affection, but she has no affection herself, its all about her!

Also, the verse almost has a femdom type vibe to it, although i doubt that was the intention.

Under the sheets you will find me
I know that nothin's for free

She will find the real him, under the sheets when hes screwing her. All this other crap he has to do is fake bullshit.
Nothing is free, is all the bs he has to do, spending money, romance, to get sex.

You take what's good for your pleasin'
I'll take what's good for this crazy evening

Same with this, as if his main purpose is to please her, not himself. Its a crazy evening, considering whats hes putting up with to bang her. Then theres the crap about giving her romance, so its probably about trying to screw a hot high maintenance woman, and all the bs he has to dish out to bang her.

hahah, in depth analysis of Ratt lyrics...

The Cars – Bye Bye Love Lyrics 16 years ago
It could also be said "bye, bye love" could be a reference to love itself, the idea of love.
All "love" is, is a broken lullaby- there really isnt any "love" in most relations. Its "always some other guy" , thats even true when married. People often have crushes on celebs, idealized mates etc.

The Cars – Bye Bye Love Lyrics 16 years ago
thats a good point about hearing different lyrics.
im pretty sure its "clouds inside *your head", listen to it.
Then its "*involving all my energies until you visited"
thats how ive always heard it.
"subsitution, mass confusion..."
the clouds inside her head, is a reference to the female psyche, and creating confusion can be a part of seduction.
"involving all my energies..."
its about all the energy and effort courting awoman can take, especially when its one who thinks shes "illustrious". Maybe a girl who's a bit out of his league.

great song, dont know what its about exactly. i think play_the_game has some good insights, about what lonely people can end up doing, esp at nighttime.
only the first two verses could be about masturbation, but i doubt it.

The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics 16 years ago
I think paigepeach nailed it. Its about being an outcast, an outsider. Outcasts can be dumped on, scapegoated by others. People can start looking pretty ugly and evil. "Women are wicked..." Guys that are outsiders are rarely popular with women, and we know how snotty some woman can be to those they consider unimportant.
"Streets are uneven when you're down"
I think this could be about a lack of overall stability, mentally, emotionally, even economically, when you are a depressed outcast. I think it also could be that people with mental illness(outcasts) sometimes walk in a unsteady and careful manner, due to the illness.

Josh Kelley – Home To Me Lyrics 16 years ago
also, i think with the sort of melancholy, wistful music- "treat her like a lady and she'll never get enough" may be kind of said in a cynical sort of way. We all know that women often will eat up drama, bad treatment and even abuse. Treat her well all the time, she gets bored. This is a source of angst for a man with a good heart. Theres no "happily ever after" with this reality of life.
Good writing on this song.

this is a good song, well done. I only know about this guy because of his beautiful wife katherine heigl.
Im pretty sure the chord changes are very similar to a led zepplin song that I cant place. The steel guitar solo sounds zepplinish too. This song and almost honest are the only songs ive heard by him that are good.

The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It Lyrics 17 years ago
im not a big killers fan, but ive realized this is a pretty good song, i find the video heavyhanded tho.
My take is its about a guy looking back on his past, and the regrets and losses that are an inevitable part of life. "Smile like you mean it" is actually kind of sarcastic, he is echoing what hes been told all his life, and realizing that it is 100% true, that life is about appearances("save some face"), and the loss, melancholy, nostalgia, existential pain he is feeling isnt really acceptable to express, its not something to acknowledge.

"And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in"

This is a reflection on how time goes on, things and people fade, the past is forever gone, everything changes, seems to express existential angst.

Ive found myself thinking these things before i ever heard this song, which is why i like it.
This song should strike a chord with artistic types.

I actually think this song also attacks Xtian hypocrites who live as if they dont believe in
God. Verses like:

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced

Sounds like its directed at closed minded hypocrites.

Bob Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone Lyrics 17 years ago
alot of good points here.
songfacts.com has some good info too. it does seem like it could be based off a short story he wrote about a debutantes fall from high society,as ive read. On wikipedia, its noted that Dylan most likely wrote/recorded the song before he ever met Edie Sedgwick in the fall of 65,so even with coincidences,it might not be about her. this song was released in 65 btw.
I personally think its just a story/song about a womans fall from grace, not based on any one particular person.
I think both the mystery tramp and napoleon in rags are references to a pimp.
'never see the frowns...' is a reference to being in her self absorbed position of power, not seeing others pain, everything existed for her.
obviously 'chrome horse' is a nice car. 'diplomat' is a wealthy man. But the wealthy guy used her, he took everything- priceless intangibles- her self-respect,dignity, etc. She was a prostitute for him, before becoming one on the streets.
"youre invisible now..." is definitely in regards to being invisible to polite society, not mattering anymore. Nothing much to conceal, when you are at the bottom of the barrel. In contrast to being a debutante where image is everything, and things are constantly concealed.
In the end, i dont think its a "hey youre better for it, join us" type message, like some here think. Its a reflection of the hardness of life, karma, comeuppance, with some empathy and melancholy thrown in.
I also dont think this was written with a political meaning although it could be interpreted that way.
Whoever said its about alcoholism has a point- all she did was get 'juiced'(drunk) in college. Alcohol could of been a big part in her slide down, its not rare.
Overall,an excellent song by dylan- hendrix's monterrey version is very good, the stones version is so-so,but the chorus is done badly.

The Police – De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da Lyrics 18 years ago
greetings, dadslildefect, fret no more, meaningmasta is here. ;-)
first off, i want to say this is a very cool song, i love the energy, beat, the repeating guitar riff...
My take on the meaning, is that words are often meaningless, especially in modern life. and that the actual words spoken often convey nothing true or real, they are often lies, or just pointless chit-chat.
"De Do Do Do" etc sounds like baby talk, and i think that what hes comparing most everyday conversation to.

"Dont think me unkind, Words are hard to find etc." in this verse, i think hes coming from the view of a deeper quiet person. He cant just babble meaninglessly all the time like everyone else. And because hes quiet, hes often seen as "unkind" or rude, stuckup etc.

"And when their eloquence escapes me
Their logic ties me up and rapes me"

i dont know exactly what hes getting at, but it may be that often people listen to a speaker emotionally, they are not being logical. in other words its more how you say it(eloquence) than what you actually say.
It also may have to do with deeper thinkers(logic) not always being good at comminicating. While glib, shallow people are often great at schmoozing.

"They're meaningless and all that's true"

Goes back to my earlier points. Most everyday words/conversation that people say are meaningless, and thats the only true thing about the words spoken.(often being lies)

Black Sabbath – After Forever Lyrics 18 years ago
Im not sure of the meaning. But ive always thought it was sarcastic in a way.

"Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave"

Regardless, i dont think its pro-Xtian, or against Satanism- its pro independent thinking.

Black Sabbath – Who Are You? Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree mnomm. i also think its not just whether god exists, but what is he/it? good? evil? some combination?

"i dont think youre so smart"

maybe that if there is a god, he cannot be all good and all powerful, because of what happens in this world. (he could be one or the other tho)

this song really sounds as if its written from a leveyan satanists viewpoint.

Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Lyrics 18 years ago
ive read that this is a tale of a burnt out rock star, but in my view, this song makes alot of sense from the viewpoint of a leveyan satanist.

You've seen life through distorted eyes
You know you had to learn

eyes distorted by society, groupthink"golden rule" you learn the brutal realities of life..satanic realities... such as "the
meek shall inherit" is bullshit

The execution of your mind
You really had to turn

religon is anti intellectual-it "executes" the use of the mind-you
had to turn from blind faith to thinking

The race is run the book is read
The end begins to show

the race for survival, the rat race
the book is read-learning, gaining knowledge, read the bible, read the satanic bible etc draw your own conclusions.
the end- there may be no reward for 'good deeds' there may be no life after death in any form.

The truth is out, the lies are old
But you don't want to know

religious lies-it is painful to give them up,the truth often hurts, so you dont want to know, although you do.

Nobody will ever let you know
When you ask the reasons why
They just tell you that you're on your own
Fill your head all full of lies

they teach you biblical/religuos teachings "golden rule" etc. that is
total b.s. you must figure out on your own that kindness, goodness
has very little worth in our society...you must learn on your own
about the hypocrisy which seems to be the 'optimal' state for the
human animal.

Ozzy Osbourne – Shot In The Dark Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is about spiritual warfare.
he's destroyed/defeated someone, physically or maybe just spiritually. he doesnt feel right about it tho.
he was taught by the powers, "society" elders etc, to practice the golden rule, turn the other cheek, etc. of course its all bs, and he learns how to fight.
when these hypocrites are being beaten, they will "remember" the crap they preach but dont practice. they will "surrender".
but he will not care for the ppl who hate(hypocrites)
he will show them no mercy.
underestimate him and look down on him now, but hes like a shot in the dark- still dangerous, and in the dark, because he does not follow "white light" teachings.

Ozzy Osbourne – Little Dolls Lyrics 18 years ago
Ive always thought this song is about "God" or whatever rules our world.
We are all "Little Dolls", unable to escape from the pain of living, and ultimately death.
Some of Ozzys lyrics(most of them he didnt write) in 70's to 80's have a "satanic" bent. like sabs "who are you?" in this view God is an impersonal force, that could care less about our suffering.
anyways in this song, God is a killer, that remains a mystery. "the worst is yet to come" could be a allusion to going to hell, after death.

It also could be a song about a serial killer/torturer, but im less partial to this interpretation.

You gotta *do it soon, cuz you're runnin outta time

The *baby's premature, the mother is a whore

I think i heard her *kickin, but thats a normal state
*Jam a hanger in your asshole until your water brake
Better use some caution, *giving yourself an abortion

You wonder if you want this, or should you kill the fetus

Vagina tissue's *torn, your pussy's kinda worn
*I think i oughta warn, if youre having a newborn,
Your inner one perspective, there is one *contraceptive
Your M.P.D. is positive, so you *cant let that baby live

I think I outta stab ya, *in the stomach, with a knife
Or push you down a flight of steps, until you fall and break ya neck
Did a little damage, can you manage *a miscarriage

Born and die in poverty, so tell me what's *subsistence
