I guess it's most likely about recovering from drug addiction like you all say, but I think some of the lyrics could also apply to someone sent to fight in a war...and then coming back home and arguing with people who don't support the war or don't care about the soldiers. The wasteland could refer to the battlefield...living in fear being in war...and so on. "Should I could I" could be talking about taking the lives of other humans as you fight. Starts out fresh and amazing, you're in love, but eventually the passion just fades away and you get bored of her/she gets bored of you, and then you can't stand each other anymore. First I want to point out that the lyrics above are wrong. I was going to post this in the corrected lyrics section but everyone seems to be posting their comments here so I guess I will too. Anyway...this song can apply to so many situations but I'll only get into one of them. I'm going to take the son/daughter to his/her father and/or mother perspective because the song kind of reminded me of the lyrical content in "For You" from their Break the Cycle album. Anyway...one interpretation of this song I see is that it's a son/daugther response to a domineering parent that can never be satisfied. For example...son trying to impress/gain acceptance from their father, but nothing is ever good enough to please his old man. I came up with this from the following lyrics: "Chances are you're oblivious to how I feel, sitting on your throne. And I'm sure that I'm not alone" ... "Who the fuck did you want me to be? I don't know where you guys get this prostitute stuff from but I'm not going to argue with anyone ones beliefs. Personally I think the song for the most part is about nice guys always finishing last. To be more specific for this song...this is a guy who is shy and nice that is trying to become more outgoing but can't seem to get the girls he wants because they prefer jerks instead (as usual). No matter what he does he's going to struggle with the fact that girls make jerks their lovers...they make nice guys friends. I come to this conclusion from lines like: "It's just the price I pay" ... Jealousy, turning saints into the sea" ... "cause I'm Mr. Brightside" and "I just can't look it's killing me". He's a nice guy but the girls he is attracted to just consider him a friend, nothing more. He's attracted to them and this explodes over a simple kiss, but as others have stated here it grows into something more than just a kiss for him, but for the girls it's only a kiss, no big deal. Also when he says "because I want it all" ... he wants the full relationship. Also the last lyrics of the song that are repeated, "I never..." I interpret that as either him never getting laid... or never getting into a real relationship with these girls, only being friends (also maybe never succeeding). I could be wrong about all of this, but for me, this is the message of the song. Songs are never meant to have one meaning. They are for people to make meanings themselves. |
