Van Halen – Love Walks In Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Love comes walkin' in Some kind of alien Waits for the opening Then simply pulls a string Another world, some other time You lay your sanity on the line Sammy says the lyrics just kind of came to him. They’re so A team (even the aliens) and written just as Love was walking in for 6 Acts Vaudeville. Amusing. I had no idea until now. Bedankt. |

Sting – I Can't Stop Thinking About You Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Entertaining the interesting muse, story, idea, pathway idea, I’m just unsure about the line “I don’t care if you exist,” but perhaps it’s a bit like the 10cc line “I’m not in love, so don’t forget it. It’s just a silly phase I’m going through.” Right. A frustrated response to that obsession. So the muse, idea, story, pathway, in fantasy, might look up and say, from Coldplay’s X and Y, " Trying hard to speak and fighting with my weak hand, driven to distraction, so part of the plan.” Perhaps with luck, the muse, story, idea, pathway eventually returns, hopefully not to an empty house. Lyrics, like fiction, are fun to muse around with. |
Joni Mitchell – The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms) Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[sillybunny:17533] Don't is a casual way of saying do not. They mean the same. It's (or it is) like calling a girl Kathleen or Kathy. The name is the same but Kathy is a casual, more friendly way, of saying Kathleen. Joni uses casual language to be poetic. Her song lyrics are like poems. Molly moves to a town of short summers and long winters. There's (or there are) no men in town. They're (or they are) off fighting in World War II. A tea leaf reader, a gypsy, tells Molly she'll (or she will) be married in a month. Molly doesn't (or does not) believe the tea leaves because there's (or there are) no men. A soldier on leave shows up. They fall in love. They stay in the town. Joni likes to show how things are like each other. Molly lives in a town that does have short summers, long winters and not too much going for it. Molly keeps saying she's going to leave. But she stays. Love keeps her there. Joni is saying the war torn world is sad. We all just want to live here and be happy but we also have wars. It bothers some people so much, I'm sure they would like to leave a world that has too much war. But they stay. Love keeps them here. I think many times songs and poems are not easy to understand but because the writer wants this. This is an anti-war song but also it is maybe a song of hope. Molly's solder doesn't die in the war. Molly says she's leaving but she sticks around. She stays. And life goes on. |
Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Sail on tiara girl. Sail on by. Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way. See how they shine. If you need a friend your snake is right behind. Like a bridge over troubled waters we will ease your mind. I appreciate your humor, however misplaced at this moment, but … But, still humor to you. Well, I mean, really. Are you rolling your eyes again? Well, yes. |

Sting – I Can't Stop Thinking About You Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I read the theme of the album is migrant travelers; people sadly wrenched from all they hold familiar by war. 244 million people left their home countries according to 2015 stats. 65.3 million people are thought to be refuges on the move in 2016, many of them engaging in desperate efforts. Naturally all of this movement rips families apart. Loved ones are lost and many families and friends will not be reunited. I hung on the lyrics for this song “I don’t care if you exist,” thinking this suggests the sheer desperation of people looking for loved ones while entertaining the sinking feeling that the ones they seek may be dead. I don’t care. I just need to know. Alive or dead, please let me find you or news of you. You permeate my thoughts. War. It’s painful, debilitating, destructive and frightening. It’s hard to digest and yet perhaps it’s an integral part of nature that reshapes our world. Granted it shifts so many from their homes but the migration will no doubt color our future. It seems ironic to see some factions warring in a vain attempt to preserve a current political and religious regime, little realizing that their efforts are serving to reimagine what they thought they were protecting. Just as earthquakes, thunderstorms and volcanic eruptions restructure our world, so does war. I’m not cool with it, but I’m beginning to understand it. A little. My heart goes out to those ripped from their normal and I hope all loved ones who wish to be found, are. |

Caribbean queen Now we're sharing the same dream And our hearts they beat as one No more love on the run So why is this in my head? Oh gee. Dragonflies and daffodils? Okay. But someone needs to learn to sing the first line because that's not how it goes. I don't know how it goes anymore because all I hear is this wrong way with emphasis on the wrong syllable, wondering if this is a tomato tomato deal. Is it? Some velvet morning when I'm straight. Okay. I'll have forgotten by then. Thought so. (smile) |
The Police – Shadows In The Rain Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[sillybunny:13813] Yes, I am an idiot, as well as an attention whore (see reply below). Everywhere I go, someone is calling out, "Hey, idiot! Yo! Attention Whore! Yeah, you!" That's funny. I'm writing under an assumed name in an ocean of comments that others need to take an extensive amount of time to pore over, and yet I yearn, dream, desire, ache to be ... what? An attention whore. Reckon I'd better learn how to accomplish this. In my free time, it's idiot that I clamor for. Song Meanings. A forum where those who appreciate lyrics can express their opinions on them. Lyrics are poems. Poems and lyrics are words. Expressing an opinion on lyrics using the poetry of others might be a bit unconventional and not something that everyone gets but why ever put the breaks on expression? Every day I read words of others that I may not understand. I do not race over to castigate them for failing to enroll in the school of my personal mentality. I might think a bit about what I didn't get. I might reconsider how I express myself and how this differs from the expressions I did not understand. But I really shy away from pronouncing distaste, and engaging in name calling. This is all about lyrics. Of course poetry can be used to express opinions on other poetic works. It's all words. All of it. Words. However I do apologize for upsetting you with my new-fangled and artsy-fartsy ideas. |

Jo Harvey Allen – Cup of Tea Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This spirited duet sung by Joe Ely and Jo Harvey Allen is from Chippy. Chippy: Diaries of a West Texas Hooker is the story of a prostitute who roamed the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico and Arizona during the 1930s and '40s. She did business with more than 6,000 johns, bartering her services for everything from lodging at fine hotels to treatment for the syphilis she contracted at age 15. She was a lesbian who was married six times - once to five men simultaneously (they were away fighting World War II), and once to the same man as her mother, who was also a prostitute. She was an alcoholic who - within a week of their births - lost each of her children to syphilis, a disease she gladly passed along to her enemies. Chippy was also a compulsive diarist who left behind 30 years' worth of journals when she died in 1967 at the age of 51. "Bundles from heaven" and ''parcels from hell" is what she called them. You couldn't ask for better source material for a collaboration by old friends, Terry Allen, Jo Harvey Allen, Joe and Sharon Eli, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Jo Carol Pierce, known for their irreverent, poignant work. |

Lovely poetic lyrics ... This from Madam I Really Don’t Like Poetry? I got over that. Geez. Don’t we all say things we really don’t mean because we haven’t heard the whole story? Can you relate to these lyrics in your life? I’m giggling. What is this? Class in session? Write a three page composition on how these lyrics might relate to your life and turn it in by Tuesday? Now you have me chuckling. Humor me. Oh well, that. And? Oh well, me ... You would never inspire such lyrics? I mean, in general. I don’t feel like I would. Some women could. Maybe Pola Negri or Olive Thomas or Evelyn Nesbit. Head lost in your history project? I’m enjoying that project. Like the poetry study, it makes history interesting and you react so much better to interesting content ... and colorful pictures. Quite your cup of java. So? Some women inspire lyrics like these. Oh, I don’t know. Any woman could. She doesn’t need to be a vamp, a Ziegfeld Follies girl or a Gibson Girl. You wouldn’t be trying to pull my leg, would you? You know enough about love to spin some delicious debate on this subject. Do I? Are you being coy? Actually, no. Must have my obsessive/compulsive head stuck in history. Haven’t really heard the song yet but expect to. But that’s so you—forever putting your work first. |

Know who the Magdalene girl is? Probably a fictional girl. I wasn’t sure what the song was saying. Faint thoughts of feegles were flitting through my mind but I put that down to a touch of cosmic humor. Dancers at the End of Time flashed through but then why not? Was it Christ became man and ran off to catch the last what—sailing? Hurrah? Wanted an in when the whole shebang was ready to end and be wished up again in the “holodome”? Something like “save the last dance for me”? All guesses. How come the song “Overture. Curtain. Lights” is making a comeback? Start of the ship show? Oh, wow. Could be. Didn’t think of that until just now. hb |

Sting – Girl from the North Country Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The line "Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine" was also used in the song Scarborough Fair, arranged by British songwriter Martin Carthy, who was Bob Dylan’s friend. Scarborough Fair, made famous by Simon and Garfunkel, is a traditional English ballad, arranged in this case by Paul Simon who also heard it from Carthy. The original ballad had different lyrics so of course each time it was arranged by another songwriter, the ballad presented different perspectives. |
Marianne Faithfull – Strange Weather Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Do you remember the Christmas invitation? Not totally. Christmas celebration in the basement. (My brother Gary would be quite ah … thrilled). Christmas tree in the room at the Townsend. In retrospect I’m not sure if she would have been charmed or just quite sure I should keep my head out of the cookie jar. And who’s to say she ever ran across that missive. Perhaps she didn’t. Sounds like you still have your head in the what–what did you call it?–cookie jar? I’m smiling. Whatever. Whatever whatever whatever … I remember the little collage. A lady with a piano? Something musical. Some portent of a musical project. Years ago and now it’s a bit vague in my busy busy head. You know, Mick was jealous. Perhaps not, but you always did like to rib him for whatever reason. He was. I’m laughing. Well good. He tried to divert her share of the Sister Morphine royalties. Best not to mess with karma. Or you. Oh pshaw! Who am I? Just a “little nuthin’” Remember that? Yes. Rasputina. (chuckle). “She liked perfume … and she had a lot of it too.” Jane just cringed a bit when she heard about you using three different perfumes on Christmas Eve. That I was colorful seems a given. I can plead being provoked, cajoled and and and and And the song? Strange Weather. Makes me think of you. (smile) |
Sting – I Miss You Kate Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The concept: This is a fantasy reminiscence of the girl who is gone; the one with the circus smile running wild. She met the fictional guy in a sleep trance, a dream dance, a shared romance. And she started writing for seven days; a kind of ultimatum note and oh gee, she had this spirit hanging on her; no doubt her rocket fuel and well, the angel? demon? smart butt? was a bit intimidating as well as slightly possessive. “It seems another suit appeared to challenge me, woe is me.” The dreamscape was like walking on the moon, although a bit precarious. “I hope my legs don’t break, walking on the moon.” Suddenly she had company–lots of it. “My sisters and I, have this wish before we die. And it may sound strange, as if our minds are deranged. Please don't ask us why, beneath the sheltering sky, we have this strange obsession. You have the means in your possession. We want our tea in the Sahara with you.” What the heck. This was getting interesting. The girl had a circus of voices in her head and they were writing fiction. Pretend she’s your sister. It’s a good role. You be the sun. She’ll be the moon. We’re crazed playwrights. We are spirits in the material world. The whole deal was mesmerizing. Was he mad about her or was she, with her loaded trolley, just some mad hatter? The menagerie sported some interesting authors. She walked into the room on the arm of my best friend. I knew whatever happened our friendship would end ... A switchblade in his pocket, murder on his mind. Blessed St. Theresa the whore of Babylon, Madonna and my mother all rolled into one. You've got to understand me, I'm not a piece of wood. Francis of Assisi could never be this good. .... Relax, have a cigar, make yourself at home. Hell is full of high court judges, failed saints. We've got Cardinals, Archbishops, barristers, certified accountants, music critics, they're all here. You're not alone. You're never alone, not here, you're not. OK break's over. A consummate actor and not to be daunted by this challenge, the hero of the tale says, and if I built this fortress around your heart, encircled you in trenches and barbed wire, then let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm, and let me set the battlements on fire, because this all did seem a bit like a tug of war. The plot got a tad ugly in a balancing act. Protest is futile, nothing seems to get through What's to become of our world, who knows what to do. She was driven to tears and yelled I quit. I want the whole lot of you out of here! But she was St. Agnes and this was the burning train. She couldn’t just quit (this wasn’t in the rules) and they weren’t about to leave. They said, when the world is running down, you make the best of what’s still around. Now our hero said, this is all quite colorful and flashy but what gives? Looks like one heavy cloud but absolutely no rain. And the point is ...? He never found out. She looked back quickly and said, looks like I have to run. Maybe I’m “transform into pumpkin” material in this fairy tale. Not really sure. Kisses. No regrets. Our hero said well, this sure sucked. I've been scattered I've been shattered. I've been knocked out of the race. But I'll get better. I feel your light upon my face. Was she still around? If you there, don't leave me wondering. If you there. He thought about her from time to time. A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves, like galaxies in my head. On and on the mysteries unwind themselves; eternities still unsaid. He could have been lost inside that amusement park funhouse, without a trace, but he wasn’t. And he still has faith in her because come on, who travels around with a posse like hers that doesn’t have a trick or two up their collective sleeve. I always had a corny side .... |

Sting – You Only Cross My Mind in Winter Lyrics | 12 years ago |
[Sting] "Well, I've got some nerve taking a Bach piece and writing lyrics to it, but he really is my teacher, and I've spent a lot of time with him, studying his work; and I became obsessed with that melody. I also felt it was exactly the right mood for this record, so I just listened and listened and listened, hoping that the narrative J.S. Bach is telling me would be translated into a concrete story - a story that I could tell. ... It was the most difficult song on the record to actually do, to avoid pathos; and you know, it was a struggle, but eventually I was convinced of putting it on the record." |
Sting – I Miss You Kate Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Sting wrote this song for his second child, Fuchsia Katherine, called Fuchsia Kate and Kate. The instrumental appeared on the original CD single for “All This Time”, released in 1991. It was also performed live by Sting on Chicago Session 1991 Fuchsia is a vivid reddish or pinkish purple color named after the flower of the fuchsia plant, itself named after the German scientist Leonhart Fuchs. Fuchsia is a synonym for magenta. Fuchsia is often misspelled as Fuschia. Sting and his first wife Frances named Fuchsia after the fictional character Fuchsia Groan, the daughter of Sepulchrave, in Mervyn Peake's novels Titus Groan (1946) and Gormenghast (1950); novels favored by Sting. Fuchsia is a dreamer and a romantic, who escapes the dull pace of life in Gormenghast by reading fantasy tales. Over the course of the novels, Fuchsia falls in love with Steerpike. She is attracted by his swashbuckling persona and by the fact that he is different from anyone else she has ever met. |
The Police – Every Breath You Take Lyrics | 12 years ago |
“This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. The Police frontman Sting wrote it after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty. In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: ‘I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.’ Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: ‘I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity. I watched Andy Gibb singing it with some girl on TV a couple of weeks ago, very loving, and totally misinterpreting it. (Laughter) I could still hear the words, which aren't about love at all. I pissed myself laughing.’” “Sting wrote this at the same desk in Jamaica where Ian Fleming wrote his James Bond novels.” At times this song is linked to Sting’s divorce from Fran, asking others to perhaps conclude that he felt possessive of her and he planned to keep an eye on her every move. It seems an odd thing for a man leaving his wife to think of doing, no matter how much he was enraptured with her. He was leaving. It may have been strange for Trudie to read these suppositions because what was she to think? He’s coming away with me but he’ll also be rabidly devoted to her? Frankly, if this had been the case and I was Trudie, I would have said, sweet package, but I think I’ll pass until he gets his head together. How can I be leaving with some guy who wants to stalk another woman? [Sting]”Following my awful separation from my wife actress Frances Tomelty in the early '80s, I went to Jamaica to escape, and I stayed at Golden Eye, the old lan Fleming house in Oracabessa that Chris Blackwell of Island owns. While I was there, I sat at Fleming's old wooden desk overlooking the ocean, the one at which he wrote all his James Bond books, and I wrote 'Every Breath You Take', 'King Of Pain', 'Wrapped Around Your Finger', all these neat songs.” Instead I don’t think the song had anything to do with Fran or Trudie but instead appealed to the imaginative side of Sting back in 1982; that part of him that delighted in playing the villain and rogue. The part of him that mentioned the role of Voldemort would be plum. Perhaps the stress of having to choose between two exceptional ladies crescendo-ed into a creative spurt that resulted in the songs he wrote on that trip to Jamaica. I can’t think that too many songwriters are inspired by living a life that 50’s parents Ward and June Cleaver might have enjoyed. Perhaps his muse just woke him up and said jot this song down. It’s certain to be a hit. I’m smiling. Well, Sting did say he knew it was going to be a hit. So the song is about possession. Spirits, I would surmise, can be multi-faceted and I reckon they know a top 40 hit when they spot one. |
