I would say and agree that it's the song's ambiguity itself that makes it so beautiful. Although I personally read "looking for the great escape" as the contemplation of suicide, I can understand that it could just as easily be read as a song about drugs. For me, the first verse speaks of internal despair and the second verse speaks of a snap-back to hope -- and I'd say the song taps in to that universal, eternal negotation between the two. I, uh, really like this song. And the video... the video! Seriously guys, check out the video. |

First year Poli Sci taught me that "soft power" was a term coined by... someone... to describe the importance of winning over the hearts and minds of your people as a means of getting them on your side, rather than using military force to do so. Something along those lines. Soooo, perhaps the fisrt and second verses are the masters of war telling their people, "Look, this is not war -- it is pretty and magical and also none of our doing." |
