Stevie Ray Vaughan – Little Wing Lyrics 17 years ago
here's the story about this song. Before SRV released Texas Flood, he was irritated by the fact that everyone was calling him the next Hendrix. However, being a man with a sizable ego, he said
" if you think I'm the next Hendrix, then here's a Hendrix song for you! Now you can all shut up about it" Only someone with big Texas cajones could ever pull that off and get away with it. Thanks SRV-RIP

Led Zeppelin – D'yer Mak'er Lyrics 17 years ago
In response to goLEAFSgo, your old man never saw Led Zeppelin play this song. The band never performed this live, due to the fact that John Bonham was uncomfortable playing the reggae style drum beat.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Takin' Care of Business Lyrics 17 years ago
The first post by Dragonattack is absolutely correct. Here's the story about the pizza guy.
When the band was recording T C B in Seattle, they were going all night trying to get the song right but just could'nt find it. it was getting late at night and they were all hungry so they ordered a pizza. the pizza delivery guy was a budding musician and heard the band and said he could add something to the song to really make it cook. The guys were ready to tell him to bugger off, but since they were tired and hungry they said sure. this is where he added the piano bit to the song. When the producer heard it the next morning, he loved it and asked who played the piano. The guys said the pizza guy played it. the producer said that he had to be found because he couldn't go uncredited on the song. The band then spent the next few hours trying to find out who the delivery guy was. the pizza guy apparantly went on to become Bette Midler's band leader. i don't know his name. I heard this from an Interview that Randy Bachman gave to a local radio staion

Neil Young – Powderfinger Lyrics 18 years ago
probably my favourite Neil Young song. In response to leefroy, I think its a good theory but I might raise a couple of points. The song mentions the boat making big waves. How did it do this without a motor? Also, how many Metis were named Emmy-Lou. I personally have a mental image of this song being about some southern moonshiners living in the backwoods and the feds coming in to break the whole operation up. Just my thoughts. By the way, didn't Neil write this song for Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Just a note- This song was originally done by Robert Johnson, king of the delta blues, around 1937.

Janis Joplin – Me and Bobby McGee Lyrics 18 years ago
"I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana, I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues". the harpoon refers to a harmonica or harp, as most blues singers call it, not shooting up. Kris Kristofferson wrote a lot of songs for a lot of different people, notably Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose" is one of the best lines ever written. After Janis and Aretha, no female singer even comes close

Warren Zevon wrote it. The dead did a cover. Not bad but a lot slower than the original

Grateful Dead – Truckin' Lyrics 18 years ago
the dead actually did get busted in their hotel room in New Orleans after a show. This song was written about their ordeal. It was years before they ever went back there

Big Sugar – All Hell For A Basement Lyrics 18 years ago
I heard an interview with Gordie Johnson where he said this song is about a guy leaving Newfoundland becasue he couldn' find work, and traveling to Alberta where there is more work than people. Regarding the reference to Kipling, I'm pretty sure that oil hadn't been discovered at the time he was around and Medicine Hat sits on vast natural gas reserves, not oil. I don't think Kipling mad the trek to 'the Hat' as he was in India most of the time. So there.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird Lyrics 18 years ago
A lot of passion about this song, huh. Just couple of things I know. Neil Young and Synyrd were not enemies. The mention of Neil in 'Sweet Home Alabama' was a good natured jab at him after Neil was dissing the south in his songs 'Southern Man' and'Alabama'. In fact, Neil wrote 'Powderfinger' for Lynyrd Skynyrd, but tragedy struck before they could record it. ' Freebird' was written as a tribute to Duane Allman

The Tragically Hip – Small Town Bringdown Lyrics 18 years ago
This song appeared on the first mini album they released (what us oldtimers used to call an EP). Gord Sinclair wrote this song and got in major shit from his fans in Kingston because they thought he was dissng his hometown. He must have been a smooth talker to get them to believe otherwise. thankfully Gord Downie took up most of the lyric writing duties. However, i still like this song as well as the whole EP

The Tragically Hip – Little Bones Lyrics 18 years ago
I've got to admit, I have no idea what this song means, but I do remember a couple of things from a radio interview years ago (at least 15).
1. Little Bones was the name of a cat in the book ' The Last of the Craxy People' by a famous Canadian author named Timothy Findlay.
2. His most popular book was titled ' Famous Last Words' (see verse 2,line 3 of the song)
Gordon Downie always seems to sprinkle tidbits of Canadiana in his lyrics. Maybe this means something to somebody and could expand upon this for me

The Guess Who – American Woman Lyrics 19 years ago
The real story is this- The Guess Who were playing some small gig in Toronto after touring the US. During a sound check, Randy Bachman just started playing the now famous guitar riff. Burton Cummings thought they were starting and ran from backstage and just started singing the first thing that popped into his head. Some kid in the audience had a portable tape recorder (remember, this is the early 70's, these things weren't all that popular) and played it back after the show. The band gave the kid a bullshit story about bootlegging, and seized the tape. Randy has always said if it wasn't for that kid with the tape recorder, the song never would have existed, as he would never have remembered what he played. Burton has said that it wasn't anything against american girls, just that after coming back to Canada, Canadian girls just looked fresher, cleaner and a little less worldly than American girls, if you know waht I mean

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song, great message. I remember hearing a radio interview with Ed King years ago and he mentioned that when the band was just starting to go on the road that Ronnie had mentioned how his mother sat him down and gave him this advice that's mentioned in the song. The rest of the band members all laughed because their mothers all gave similar speeches to them as they were about to embark on their own
