One must keep in mind that tom Sawyer is not just a rebel, but Twain's philosophical voice. He is the embodiment of a view point, one that twain used to criticize society. "The New Tom Sawyer" is no different, he is a man who knows the uncertainy of a random, quantum universe and still seeks purpose. While you "trade energy" at work, he "gets right on to the friction of the day". Which is to say he does not allow this petty rat race distract him from the nature of the days friction i.e. the truth. A man who is not beholden to a false god for pupose nor to the fleeting tyranny of material wealth, he lives to find a reason for purposelessness.

When you inject heroin you first draw blood out of your vein and let the drug mix with your blood. you then push it into your body. Addicts refer to an empty vein as one that has been used so much that you can no longer draw blood. So certainly in one sense this is about drug addiction but ultimately its bigger than that. The nature is true addiction is that one starts out with the goal of killing pain, ending pain, relieving pain. Quickly the drugs become necessary for the body's function and cause greater and greater pain. its a methaphor for life, often that which we think will bring us peace will bring us greater misfortune.

for me it seems he is setting the life of a nerdy kid who play video games instead of socializing. What makes it meaningful to me is the line "im waiting for the sun to go out" because i remember being lonely and playing video games in the dark.

I think its a bit more than just the battle of tripoli. I think its about a soldier during the battle wondering how he survived. I think the "he" mentioned in the song is Death or perhaps the devil. Not that it is religious in nature just symbolic of the thoughts one might have about dying. I think the line about being tied up and set on someones lawn could easily be a reference to a drafted soldier being forced overseas into battle. But ultimately i think the battle is a metaphor for humanities struggle with death. basically i think the narrator of the song know hes going to die, tells death to get ready and is shocked to find death didnt show thus the line "Did I forget that I said to you that I'd be there" which is interesting because he assumes that he himself forgot about his impending death which could symbolize the fact that we all control out own destiny.

I think this has been interpreted a bit literally and some assholes refuse to interpret it at all in which case why even bother posting on this song if you dont have anything near an original thought. It seems the death or sickness within his goldfish indeed causes him a lot of pain. But more important and i think what is intended by the lyrics is his reaction to it. He wants to save his fish, change the world so that this fragile being can live. This is not about fish, this is a Holden Caufield complex. Hes asking how does he end the suffering in the ones he loves? He leaves it to us to think about that but if you keeping arguing rather its about a fucking fish or not then I dont think penelope is going to make it.

This song is the perfect description of depression and its roots. In fact its a description of whats lacking in modern society and it has nothing to do with some hedonistic ideal of happiness. The drive to settle and seek the path of least resistance prevades the contemporary world like ebola. In the name of progress we choose the second best love, second best job and teach our children if they dont choose a career by middle school the same will happen to them. "I remember being inside something more than you" sums it up, we experience bliss in small doses and seek only to return to it yet we never can because we have no patience and after a while we believe that we were never meant to feel such contentment in the first place.
