Flobots – Same Thing Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'm pretty sure "Hampton" is a reference to Fred Hampton, actually. |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I take that back. After listening a few more times, I think it is patens. It fits the rhyme scheme (that word in the other two verses doesn't rhyme with the part right before it; "ten years on rewind" or "vices and wheels") and it sounds correct. Plus, I think it sounds better than screaming about slices, haha. Not sure about funeral games, but that sounds plausible. Funeral gates doesn't mean anything, that I know of. Good job, dude. Sorry I doubted you before. I think I'll go back and listen with some more of your interpretations in mind. |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think the second verse may be "Oh great creator, it's dark in the manger." That's what it sounds like on a lot of the live vids, anyway. I found one where Jesse sort of moaned the first line rather than screaming, and it really, really sounded like that. |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I definitely don't hear "patens" at all, lol. Whatever it is rhymes with vices, so it's most likely slices. Same meaning (communion bread,) different word. |
Brand New – Sink Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Some of this actually looks pretty good. My issue is that whatever the first screamed part is, when he sings it live, it sounds like it has far fewer syllables. A guy I know suggested that, at least live, he says "you're the bait and I'm the shark," and I listened to like a billion different videos on YouTube and that really does sound like what he's saying, live. But it sounds like "sailor" on the record, despite it not rhyming whatsoever when it does rhyme throughout the rest of the song. I haven't heard "truth might lay out on this track," I hear "and heal my leg out on this track" but your line is definitely a lot cooler, haha. As for the chorus, I actually doubt he screams "water." I also think it's "at dawn the fire snuck into your bedroom" or "I've drawn their fire and snuck into your bedroom." I like the first line more, though. |
Brand New – Daisy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
As much as I hate talking about lyrics more than meaning, I think the background lyrics are at least close to: You've done a lot to be saved (or "I don't know what to say") But you don't want to miss out (or "But you don't make a sound") We don't know our rights from our wrongs* To increase the flood Don't say you won't get scared, then leave Don't mention all the good there would be Don't say he's alone To increase the flow The starred one is the hardest to make out. I can't really even tell how many syllables there are, it fades into the music very heavily. I think it may be something about "rungs" and I think I hear "hearts" or something. "To increase the flood" down sounds very spot-on, to me, though the first line after it is a bit sketchy. The last line of each stanza doesn't seem to make too much sense, but that's really what it sounds like. It makese sense in context of the rain as used elsewhere in the song, but where it is in context of itself seems a bit strange. I don't know. I love this song, though. |
Brand New – Daisy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Increase the flood is what I've been saying. I'll post my thoughts in a separate comment. |
Manchester Orchestra – When We Were Trees Lyrics | 14 years ago |
You fell too fast Like a cannon ball But the fishnet stocking hands caught me again And your head explodes like nothing's wrong My God, we laid there silent, for an hour And the birds they watched like a funeral And they sang us all their pretty funeral songs Yaweh, Yaweh Hallelujah What a mess that you have made again this time Tempt us, tempest, Hallelujah And the birds they cry and watch us as we squall And as we fall And we must have laid alone for hours I could feel your cold blood creeping up my arm And I asked you if you were all right But the bubbles from your mouth gave out alarm And our mothers ran towards your ghost While our fathers tried to fix your eggshelled head And they're singing humpty dumpty Hallelujah The king Himself could not fix you again Now I sing because I miss you And I meant to tell you that but I was scared I was scared The second verse sounds like a seizure or something. |
Brand New – Daisy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think you're matrixing the cymbals and the bass. I don't think he says that live, either. |
Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"I stole bricks from the dam almost every day Now I'm drowning in the flood I made Explain myself to me on the other side I will want some answers when I die." This is why I hate it when people who never come to the site post new lyrics to feel special. Then we're left with pages that don't ever get updated. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Actually, eating your young is a reference to destroying things you've created. I don't believe there was ever a prominent period of time where animals ate their offspring in large scales. If that was the case, how did they propegate their species? And if that was the case, why weren't said animals eaten by their parents? Sorry, you made that up. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Well, if you're telling the truth, it sure does sound like Jesse says "sitting duck." Not to mention it rhymes. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
No offense taken. The guy at Ap.net who allegedly talked to Jesse has a good track record. Everything else he said about the show was later verified by YouTube videos, such as the setlist and Jesse's mic going out due to blown fuse, so I don't see why he'd start making things up after that. As for why Jason Tate is so special? He works with brand new's management. He's met the band members several times. Open up your copy of Deja Entendu and read the special thanks, and he's listed in there. He had Daisy long before Daisy was even called and one head can never die. But I don't see why it's so difficult to believe anyway; the official website says a new sit is coming soon, and they posted the DaG lyrics on the website before, so I'm pretty confident that when the new site goes up, the lyrics will be on there somewhere. Tate doesn't have a physical booklet, he just has a pdf document with the lyrics in it. Hope this clarifies some things. |
Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, but the lyric book actually says "baby cum angels." Even spelled that way. Weird. And doesn't make much sense. Hey, lyric booklets have been wrong before. |
Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Some clarifications, probably already mentioned: Many of these lines are probably bible references. Three and not jsut two, that's the Adam and Eve story. "A 3rd had just been made and we were swimming in the water," he's not talking about a baby, he's talking about the planet. They're swimming in the primordial ooze. But, like the other lines, it's quite possible that they mean more than one thing, so he could be talking about a baby as well. The Universe IS shaped like the earth - at least that's one of the theories. We aren't sure... I see a ton of people arguing this, have any of you ever studied astronomy? Going off of memory, the Universe is speculated to either be all but flat, or round - but round like a balloon, with all of the stars and planets and bodies being the latex, and what's inside, nobody knows, possibly nothing at all. But under this theory, it's indeed true that if you went straight for long enough, you'd end up at the same point you started at. Isaac Brock is an atheist, but he has a great knowledge of biblical stories, and puts them to great use. And anyway, he seems to be pretty romantic, for an atheist; he's willing to question and wonder, so having biblical references in his songs isn't beyond question. |
Iron & Wine – Judgement Lyrics | 14 years ago |
A few corrections: Day walks out and there's no sound There's a candle burning by me now Light enough for to see the things beyond me Door is wide as her eyes on me So the night comes in and starts to breathe The only name that I really know Tell me dear, do you think of me At a drop of rain, or when you see The wind, it rakes as it moves across the water Judgement comes when I'm all alone Like a spyglass on the furthest coast Favored now that it's left behind When you talk to me You could swallow me Nighttime brings me a place I fear Where I hear your words and feel you near Fingers only to find a frozen memory Sometimes clothes chosen long ago A direction down a gravel road Make you wish you could take them back Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh Days walk on and when there's no sound I go straight to you and find you down Kneeling next to the water where I left you Knee-deep now in the creek I made From the landscape lost I want to save Save it now or be punished more When you talk to me You could swallow me Nighttime brings me a place I fear Where I hear your words and feel you near Fingers never to find a warmer memory Sometimes friends we knew long ago Or affections we set free to go Find you right where you ran to hide Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm almost positive it does not. |
Brand New – You Stole Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah... no. |
Brand New – You Stole Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Actually, several people have said it. And again, it's probably more of a reference to Jesus Christ. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The lyrics sheet does exist; it belongs to Jason Tate, and he is sworn to secrecy. As for who Jesse said it to; it's one of my friends from absolutepunk.net, and while there's no video to back it up, there is video to confirm everything else he said happened, and I have no reason not to believe him. I think it sounds like "hell" when slowed down; but I think that's just because of matrixing. |
Brand New – You Stole Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Actually, it's probably more of a nod to Jesus Christ: I know you'll come for me in the night like a thief But I've had some time to hone my lying technique |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It doesn't really matter that Vin wrote it, because Jesse said it. Vin may have written it down differently, but Jesse said it, so he would probably know what he said. |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't think it's "between these vices." I think maybe, just at the beginning of the song, he says "We need vices, do we need vices." But not like a question, like an affirmation. |
Brand New – Daisy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think the last background line sounds like "to increase the flow," but sometimes the last word sounds like "flood." I think I'll go over it with some of the stuff you guys have written down. |
Brand New – Daisy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This site is a place for people to talka bout the songs and their meanings, and share ideas. Why does doing that make us idiots? Nobody is saying their opinion is the truth, we're all just bouncing ideas off of each other, trying to get the most out of each song. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Exactly. Several songs on DaG are credited as being written by various members, but all lyrics except handcuffs are by JL. We don't have that info for this. I'd say it's safe to assume the lone songs are entirely by that author, but the boths we have no way of knowing. It could be that one wrote the words and the other wrote the lyrics. As far as At the Bottom goes, in an interview Jesse said Vinnie started the song with a concept and wrote a few lines, then Jesse wrote the rest. But I haven't heard anything about You Stole or In a Jar. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"This guy" is me, haha. I've revised this on a personal many times, that was my first draft. |
Brand New – In a Jar Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't think it's too far-fetched at all. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's a little outdated, but: http://www.absolutepunk.net/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=25712#e220252 |
Brand New – Be Gone Lyrics | 14 years ago |
With it getting hard to stay up, I think I can hear God calling my name You'll probably make my heart break But I was told you're coming to know Coming home And you stole the car but I'm scared that I would keep it for my own And all the rain covering the summer Coming home They're coming home You're coming home Yeah, you're coming home Coming home |
Brand New – Sink Lyrics | 14 years ago |
No, it doesn't. "Dead" is not a noun. You don't turn into a dead when you die. It's an adjective. And ate would be entirely the wrong tense, if it was. You might as well say "I'm going to ate my dinner tonight." That's horrible grammar... brand new have stretched grammar before, but that's just plain stupid, it requires them to use an adjective as a noun and then also use said non-noun in the wrong tense. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
No, Vin didn't write every song on the album. Jesse wrote several, including this one and Vices. They wrote a few together, according to... iTunes, I think it was. I'm going off of memory, but I think it was something like: Vin - Gasoline, Be Gone, Daisy, Noro Jesse - Vices, Bed, Sink, Bought a Bride Both - At the Bottom, You Stole, In a Jar I could be off, though. |
Brand New – Be Gone Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's getting hard to stay up I think I can hear God calling my name You'll probably make my heart break But I was told you'd call me tonight [or "come to know"] Calling home And you stole the car but I'm scared I would keep it for my own -- Calling home I think it might be "coming home." I don't know... this is what I got, it's probably wrong. |
Brand New – Coca-Cola Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's "bless your beautiful hide," according to the official site. It also is "torn paws," I'm pretty sure I put that, someone might've un-corrected it... or I'm just crazy, lol. The bubble boy story is interesting. They made a movie out of that, not sure if it mentions the coca-cola thing, but there are a lot of movie references in bn's music. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I wasn't meaning to be condescending, I actually thought it was kind of humorous. But like you said, you've only given it a brief listen... I would reccomend going further into it. Didn't really mean to tread all over your interpretation... I just am pretty sure I know most of the lyrics; I've been listening to the album for over a month (heard it completely almost 75 times) and I've listened to the alternate recordings (which are in-studio acoustic performances, the words are far easier to make out.) And anyway, it's probably not a good idea to assume you know what's going on in the band members' personal lives, even if the songs are about that, which I really don't take them to be. |
Brand New – In a Jar Lyrics | 14 years ago |
After listening to a live version of In A Jar, I think this might be the chorus: No one save me, someone Take control of you Someone take my life Well there's nowhere they'll be safe tonight I might be off on the second line, but the other three sound accurate. |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
After hearing a live version of the song, I'm about 90% sure he says "We need vices and fifteen slices of bread." Which I thought was very dumb, until someone on absolutepunk brought up how he's talking about communion bread, and now I think the line is awesome, haha. |
Brand New – Sink Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Haha. There is nothing there to even slightly suggest he's referring to Obama. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Then don't say things like "You can't argue with me." If you're going to assert that you're indeniably correct, then you'd better be pretty damn correct. The last line of At the Bottom has been confirmed since the band has performed the song acoustically many times, and the line is clear as day. YouTube it. It's nice that you're concerned, but again, nearly everything you said was based on a line that you were way off on... best not to jump to conclusions in that kind of situation. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think you might be right, but if you are I think it's "Little cities' names woven along the maps." But this sounds like it might actually be it, I'll give it a listen. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Elf... you actually don't know what you're talking about. You failed even at the cover, it isn't a dog, it's a freaking fox... and the line during At the Bottom is "I will want some answers when I die." Bed goes "Later on the bed." Drowning in a kelp bed, well, as I understand it, Kelp is at the bottom of the sea, it's basically saying he sank. You got almost all of the lyrics wrong. Daisy isn't meant to symbolize pot, I'm pretty sure. You have no idea what Jesse is doing in his personal life, especially since your assessment is based on things you so far have been 100% incorrect about... |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Just found the alternate version... I'm thinking it might be "little cities' names on very lonely maps." |
Brand New – Sink Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I agree. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
If Archers didn't go "the God I believe in never worked on a campaign trail," I might agree with you. Who knows. The feeling I get from a lot of the lyrics (and remember, Vinnie wrote a lot of Daisy, and we don't know who wrote Noro) isn't so much that he lost faith in God, but in organized religion. Like the forest, I kind of see as a metaphor for what other people tell us we should believe, and he wants to see the light beyond that. Someone posted on the Bought a Bride page that an alternate recording of that song has the line "folded up my prayer book, I couldn't see the light," which also makes me think this. Like he isn't finding God in the words of human beings, you know? |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I suggested "little cities' names hover along the maps" before and I think you're the first person to also hear that... it still sounds a little bit off, though. This line will be the end of me, haha. Over and all around doesn't rhyme with train tracks... weird that they would do that. I'd help, but I can't find that version anywhere... |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't know. That's horrible grammar, and it sounds like there's a V sound, on the record. |
Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Where can I hear this? I can't find it online, and I didn't see it at their myspace... I know they recorded one and I think it was a bonus track if you bought the album from some specific place, but is it online somewhere so I can verify? Thanks! |
Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I thought so, too. I thought it sounded sort of like "we need vices and wheels to the funeral gate," but I'm not sure. |
Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Thought I'd let you guys know, a fan posted on absolutepunk that he asked Jesse what the line was at the signing, and Jesse reportedly said the line on the record is "I'm on my way out," but that he thinks "I'm on my way to hell" is a really cool line. |
Brand New – Sink Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, and the song is called 'Sink,' so that's probably what he's saying... |
