Bananarama – I Heard A Rumour Lyrics 6 months ago
I really hope you're still here, @[Ultimate:48661] Panopticon. It would be amazing after 17 years. But as for your comment, I agree with you. The song is pretty self-explanatory.
Except for one element: what does the singer mean by a "broken heart"? Why does she say that her lover has his heart broken? Why does she sing "I heard a rumour / They say you got a broken heart". Did he cheat and because of being dumped does he consider himself the victim?
So many years, so many doubts.

The Carpenters – Top Of The World Lyrics 8 months ago
I. JUST. CAN'T. BELIEVE. IT.

This website has been up for more than 20 years. This song is more than 50 years old... It's one of Carpenters' signature songs... and it has only one comment!

ONE!

It's innocent, it's cheesy and is another song that screams love to the wind. But it's perfect. And while their lyrics convey no secret and no hidden meaning at all, I have never came across a more perfect description of the feeling of being in love. Passing through a plethora of heavenly metaphors and references to nature it captures with universal grasp, as Elton John put it, how wonderful life is once you and your loved one share the world.

Bruce Springsteen – State Trooper Lyrics 10 months ago
@[mirrorsreflection:47192] I just listened to this song for the first time. It caught my attention so bad that I had to read the lyrics (Engish is not my native language) and I believe you're dead right.
I think Bruce is trying to let the story unfold itself by the driver's rumination. Only on the second verse we're told that he worries not that much for himself as for the result of a checkpoint stop.
The "I got a clear conscience 'bout the things that I done" line tells us that the driver's past actions are at odds with standard morals, or at least with the law, so it's to be expected that they will be reviewed if he got into trouble somehow. And if he's got no registration papers, it must be for some reason, right? Some reason different than not having had time to get them from the drawer...

Pearl Jam – I'm Open Lyrics 1 year ago
@[platus:46370] Depressing?? I think it's exactly the opposite!!
It's a description about how, as you age, you build an understanding of the universe which allows you to stand in it. It's an invitation not to reinvent yourself, but to be. Be in the universe.

Is it my idea or this is a cover of Ministry's "Jesus Built my Hotrod"?
After all, Gibby sang on that one and the lack of clarity over the implications of his involvement for copyright issues could explain the title of the song.

Now, 15 years after I wrote this comment, my son is two years old. He's happy and heatlhy and I couldn't be more grateful to the universe (and to whoever is responsible for it) because of that. Both these lyrics and my comment take on a much more real meaning.

Kim Carnes – I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is Lyrics 2 years ago
This is such a beautifully sad song... She sings to an on-and-off lover she\'s in love with, but not only he doesn\'t know; he\'s in no position to acknowledge that. "You never seem to change" she sings bemoaning his playership. And all the while she, as much as him, take other partners. But, even in bed with anyone, she cannot forget him and that\'s why she says "And when I need to see you again, all I have to do is close my eyes. Oh the picture\'s coming in my friend."\nIt is really, really aching.

Broken Social Scene – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) Lyrics 2 years ago
I can\'t believe there are no comments to this version. Maybe it\'s because it is not their song, but I don\'t see harm in that.\nIn fact, even though they are the same lyrics, the mood this cover conveys is far different from the original deliver. It\'s much more somber.\nWhile Joy Division\'s song talks about the realization of the divide, Broken Social Scene\'s one traces the moment they\'re definitively not together anymore.

Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait Lyrics 2 years ago
When I was a boy, TV transmissions ended at 01:00 a.m. at most. I had pen pals from other countries; it was the only way to chat with someone from afar. I exchanged written pieces of paper with my friends at class in school to talk about the teacher. I visited friends at their homes: if we were from among the lucky ones who had computers, it was an Atari with a cassette loader so we had to wait 10 or more minutes for a game to load. Later in life I exchanged music with them, and if the disc lasted 50 minutes, you had to wait for 50 minutes for the copy to be ready... and sometimes you had to repeat the process. If you wanted to watch a movie that was already out of theaters, you had to wait one or two weeks for it to be shown on TV after it was announced.
I have a two-year-old son. He will grow up in an world so much different than the one I grew up in. In fact, my childhood was much more alike my parents' than the one he will know.

@[JohnDiFool2:33213] While it's correct that Alan Shepard was the first Unitedstatian in space, his capsule was nicknamed "Freedom 7". "Liberty Bell" was the name given to another cpasule piloted by the astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom.
Liberty Bell's spaceflight lasted 15 minutes and I believe this song is about that mission. The only verse that confuses me is the first one where it says "No brainwaves".

The Darkness – Friday Night Lyrics 5 years ago
I think the singer is saying all this not to a present person, but to his memory of a classmate who he was in love with. They had the same extracurricular activities. All of that is true, except for dance. No school has dance as a complementary activity, much less at night. That part was what he fantasized about. At the end of the school week he would come home and dance to music with her as a dance partner in his imagination.

Madonna – Oh Father Lyrics 5 years ago
For me this song depicts a psychological process. At the beginning of a song, the singer holds a grudge towards her father because of his violent upbringing style. She looks at it from the simplistic point of view of a child, believing that violence comes from the absence of love. She severes ties with him and so states that he cannot hurt her anymore.
But as the song progresses she grows old and begins to understand why people behave the way they do, and so comes to realize that people traumatized by violence enact violently on others.
She ends up saying the same: her father cannot hurt her anymore, but not because he is absent, but because she has forgiven him

Jawbox – Chicago Piano Lyrics 6 years ago
It could be, as DeMinor put it, a metaphor about turning tables in society. But since I am reading "Psychic Confusion: The Sonic Youth Story" by Stevie Chick, I have been learning a lot about the transition many "indie" bands made to mainstream labels on the 88-94 era and how in many cases these bands were shocked by the inhumanity of these big conglomerates. The lyrics to "Cooling Card" fit that atmosphere of ambivalence towards a step that could be the walk of a promised idillic way of making music or a corporate trap which makes you become a numb dollar-making machine. This is specially true for the lines that mention guarantees and the attack to the "stern old men" who "make the bed" as in the preparations they did in order to assure a new band or artist signed a contract for them.

Pixies – Bird Dream Of The Olympus Mons Lyrics 6 years ago
@[kshe95:26286] Maybe they're the same character; maybe not. "Trompe le Monde" is an album inspired by space and travel themes. Many of the songs are about trips and processes that went awry (as in "Planet of Sound", "Motorway to Roswell", and "Distance Equals Rate Times Time"); therefore, it is not odd to think that two stories have similarities or that two stories share their main character.

Ministry – Let's Go Lyrics 6 years ago
You know? You might think this lyrics are so simple that they become bland, but I love that directness. These are lyrics that fit with the tone of the song: fast and straight. They conceal nothing. They are confrontational and establish a straightforward critique of an obviously greedy administration.
They are a satire of those extractive politics which will, in the end, drive the world insane.

Revolting Cocks – Attack Ships on Fire Lyrics 6 years ago
The title comes from a quote in "Blade Runner" (1982). Roy, the replicant (artificial human) says "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.".

Ministry – Lockbox Lyrics 6 years ago
Considering that Al Jourgensen had a huge debt with the IRS at the time and that he felt he was being harassed by them the lyrics seem to embody the pressure he and Ministry were subjected to. On the other hand, 2002 was the year when all the talks to start the invasion to Iraq began to gain attention and, therefore, public opinion focused on the war to come.
I believe Ministry combined both inspirations in these misanthropic lyrics.
