Tex Perkins And The Dark Horses – Lucid Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
No shit, this is one of the all time classic Australian songs. It's just a shame hardly no-one has heard it!
The whole album 'Sweet Nothing' is pure gold. I strongly suggest anyone who hasn't heard it, and has an ear for a bit of alternative Oz music, to go to your closest record store, pick it up, and give it a spin. You won't be disappointed.. especially with Lucid! |

PJ Harvey – Kamikaze Lyrics
|
Well, Polly Jean, you are amazing. This song, this album, simply incredible. Arguably the most underrated song on 'Stories from..' (hence no-one yet commenting), the power, passion and that voice would make a very worthy addition to Ms PJ Harvey's 'Best Of' in years to come..
A point of interest: the word kamikaze actually wasn't used by the Japanese in WWII, shinpu was. Rumour has it the Americans adopted it after wrongly translating the Japanese characters although the literal transaction is the same for both: 'Divine wind'. |

Beth Orton – Stolen Car Lyrics
|
Ok.. Firstly, Beth is an amazing songwriter. Amazing. Completely underated. But about this song, well there's been little analysis...
I think that it is basically Beth coming to an understanding that this is the wrong relationship for her. I think the basis for it is that this guy 'stood for everything' and 'every line speaks of love' and therefore, she doesn't get the attention or lavished as well as she'd like. As she writes, 'it's little things like this that matter to me.'
She comes to the realisation that she is 'hitching a ride'. That is, she really isn't there for the long haul and everything vanishes instantly: 'i see a face drive like a stolen car'. It's gone...
And the last line 'i wish i knew better by now, when i'm old enough of not to' is a plea to understand what is love! Something i share with Ms Beth Orton...
P.S. For the Beth fans, check out Ryan Adam's break up song, 'English Girls Approximately' which is about Beth Orton. It's brilliant songwriting! |

Augie March – One Crowded Hour Lyrics
|
Well krispychick69... it is undoubtably up there with the best of Augie March. It'll be interesting to compare the album to Sunset Studies, which, i believe, is up there with the best of the best Aussie albums of all time.
Anyway, i was just looking at the lyrics while listening to the song, and i think you're on the right path... but (and people i'm sure will disagree with this, i'm not sure myself) but i have an incling it could be about a teenage fling that went wrong, and perhaps he (not necessarily Glenn, who quite often rights from afar...e.g. Owen's Lament) didn't realise how wrong it went.
I'm thinking that he had a child on a one night stand for few reasons and the girl gave it up (i.e. adoption) without ever telling him.
1. 'Should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen in somebody you'd known since you were sixteen': a child that you didn't know about
2. 'Far from these nonsense bars and their nowhere music it's making me sick. And I know it's making you sick': this could refer to the fact that they may have met in a bar, which led them to sleeping to gether which 'i know it's making you sick' and the fact that she is pregnant makes him feel sick... perhaps... it would have to link to point 4 below too..
3. 'That night, the silence gave birth to a baby
They took it away to her silent dismay And they raised it to be lady Now she can't keep her mouth shut': the most literal evidence i guess that there was this child who is now a lady and wants to find her parents.
4. You said, "What is this six-stringed instrument but an adolescent doom?"
And one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin: i think this links everything together. The music, the band (perhaps she was a muso; 'green-eyed harpy of the songland'?) leads to the act which would create the baby... one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin.
As i said, i'm not too sure about this interpretation, but i thought i would explore it anyway... maybe? If it wasn't for that one verse about the baby it would all seem quite simple.. Simply, as krispychic said, 'the guy thought he found love and it wasn't there' and they both tried to keep convincing themselves of the fact that it was indeed real: She says, "Boy I know you're lying Oh but then, so am I," And to that I said "Oh well."
Regardless, it's a fantastic song and i can't wait to see these guys in action again soon! |

Ben Lee – Into The Dark Lyrics
|
I think breathing tornados simply refers to his transition as a person from the time of the release of the record titled, 'Breathing Tornados' where he was quite pessimistic and as Bernard Fanning from Powderfinger around the time infamously labelled him, 'a precocious little cunt', to now where his lyrics are filled with love and happiness which has allowed him to see and enter 'the eye of the storm'; the important parts of life which he couldn't when he previously had this problematic outlook and an arrogant demenour.
In fact, i think that that's the theme of the whole album, 'Awake is the New Sleep'... It's all said in the title |

Ryan Adams – English Girls Approximately Lyrics

What can u say? Ryan Adams is simply an amazing singer/songwriter (especially when he sticks with this sort of genre), and this song is captivating... i just love how he gives abackground to the whole relationship and it's complexities, and has all these descriptive little lines, yet manages to sum it up so perfectly and simply at the end; "just three words my love; you meant everything". Brilliant! |

Missy Higgins – All For Believing Lyrics
|
Yeah, i remember hearing this when i would've been about 14 odd, and just being amazed that someone a year older than i could write and make such a brilliant song! Innocent_eyes01, no doubt that there are many a teenager of that age who thinks about things as deep and has feelings as strong, but to say that writing something like this song, both lyrically and musically, when you're 15 is not hard, is up there with the most ridiculous things i've heard in a while... |

Missy Higgins – The Special Two Lyrics

I don't think i've actually met anyone who doesn't appreciate Missy Higgins! Great to see Aussie acts finally getting some mainstream recognition; but sarah_tyger, i don't think there is a lack of australian talent at all. You just have to look and search a bit deeper beyond commercial road b/c there really are some fantastic acts going around who don't get much, if any kudos! |

\'ZeroGenerator\' and \'Traffic Generator\', i think ur both pretty close, and both issues are probably quite interrelated in many respects anyway, in that the failure of a marriage would make you question the reasons for ur existence and the like.
But you, \'Chocolate\', how u relate this song to using technology is beyond me?! Hopefully you\'re taking the piss... |

Sure, this isn't another 'Wonderwall' or 'Live Forever', but regardless, and even though it did take time to grow on me, it is a top song! Highly recommend listening to it turned up loud! Necessary to fully appreciate it i think... |

Powderfinger – Private Man Lyrics
|
Nice analysis 'freak'. I never really could work it out properly, but you're spot on. If you are correct, then the line 'now he falls so far' makes perfect metaphorical sense. They aren't talking about a physical fall here but a mental and psychological collapse where 'he falls so far'. A perfect line in the context really |

Lucky 7 – Tiffany Lyrics

i think this song perfectly sums up guys who are too proud to be honest with themselves about their relationships, and who are too proud to be honest with their girl. 'I cling to words i cannot say' and 'i've played these games one too many times"... it just sums up me, and i'm sure plenty of guys perfectly! |

Oasis – Live Forever Lyrics
|
In the documentary Live Forever, Noel discussed that the song was about growing up in a lower class and about resisting, as debaser2002 mentioned, the 'i want to kill myself attitude'. It has a similar, although much more subtly said meaning as the Pulp's 'Common People' where these people are focussed on day to day living, and don't care 'how your garden grows'
Read this lyrics, and it is pretty evident... i think:
Maybe I don't really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly
Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks it to the bone
Maybe I just want to fly
I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breath
Maybe I just don't believe |

Oasis – Stop Crying Your Heart Out Lyrics

Noel, although i love the man, speaks shit in many respects. in an interview with Australian radio station, Triple J, Noel said that he 'wrote this song for a friend, and he jsut fucking disappeared off the face of the earth, just like that. I don't even know if he's heard the fuckign thing'. Anyway, it's irrelevant i guess. Awesome tune, and can't wait 'til the next album! |

Cat Power – He War Lyrics
|
Yeah, this was the first Cat Power song i had heard too. I think the song is about a girl dumping this guy, and the guy just can't get over it; "i never meant to be the needle that broke your back", "he will kill for you"... and the girl is trying to convince him that she isn't actually worth it, or at least make him think she's not; "don't look back", "i'm not that hot new chick".... maybe :p |

Jeff Buckley – Vancouver Lyrics

umm, in response to your question, i don't think so. The only reason i say this is because he played it live for ages, just as an instrumental, and then wrote the lyrics later. Strangely enough, i reckon the instrumental on the Live at Chicago DVD is even better than the Sketches' lyric version. So much power! |

This song was important in the life of Jeff Buckley as he played it at his father Tim's funeral, and blew the gathering away with the feeling and ability of his performance. Jeff Buckley – Nightmares By The Sea Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
i love this song too. probably my fav off sketches. but i think the song has to be about people using each other for sex basically, or getting into relationships purely on physical attraction, and the effect it has on future relationships and the like. i'm not overly sure on this, and i'd be interested to hear other opinions but it just sounds from the lyrics such as;
"i've loved so many times and I've drowned them all.
from their coral graves, they rise up when darkness falls.
with their bones they'll scratch the window, I hear them call,
"don't know what you asked for"
stay with me under these waves, tonight
be free for once in your life tonight
so new to your bedroom floor,
you know damn well where you'll go.
beware the bottled thoughts of angry young men.
secret compartments hide all of the skeletons |
