The song is clearly about a guy who does nasty things for pay. Not necessarily a hitman, but someone who does dirty deeds (roughing-up, adultery, murder) for cheap. AC/DC is one of the most straight-forward bands on Earth. Aside from a liberal use of double entendres, what you hear is pretty much what you get with them.
The first verse is about a girl whose high school principle (high school head) is banging her for the grades she needs to graduate. Bon's offering to take care of the situation for her (beat him up or kill him). The phone number is an Australian number (AC/DC are from Australia, duh). It's not a woman's measurements.
The second verse is about a woman whose man is cheating on her. Bon's offering to sleep with her for revenge. Essentially a gigolo or male prostitute job.
The third verse is about a guy who wants to kill his wife but does not have the guts to do it. Bon is offering to kill her for him, plain and simple. The "back door man" line always confused me, but I think it's safe to say Bon was using the wrong term and it was not some sort of offer for gay sex.
The outro is just a list of ways to kill people, with nods to other AC/DC titles (TNT, High Voltage). A "necktie" is when you slit someone's throat and pull their tongue out through the hole. |

I take it to mean that "Death or Glory" means nothing in the grand scheme of things. You can believe in something so much that you would give your life for it, but in the end, face it, you're not special.
The guy in the first verse had some grand cause at one time in his youth, now he is old and bitter. He became just another story. |

This song is great. After two songs in a row praising "Whatsername" Jimmy gets smacked in the face with the, "Nobody likes you..." chant. That will fuck you up I guess which leads into "September" and his suicide in "Homecoming: Part I". |

This song and "American Idiot" are horribly out of place in the context of the rest of the album. If the album started with "JoS" and went right into "Blvd of Broken Dreams" the consistency would be fluid.
Instead you start off with an out of place political rant, then jump into the story of JoS where in the end he leaves home. The next logical story point, his walk on the Blvd, is interrupted by another out of place political rant.
I deleted songs 1 & 3 on my iPod, now the album makes a lot more sense.

This song reminds me alot of "Tommy" as far as production goes. I could totally see it on Broadway one day. "R&R Girlfriend" reminds me of Meatloaf's bit in Rocky Horror. It sort of jumps in the middle of it all but I still think "R&R GF" kicks ass. |

I also noticed the guitar solo on Tales of a Broken Home" is a straight rip of Johnny Cash's, "Ring of Fire" by way of Social Distortion.
There are lots of little "borrowed" bits sprinkled all about the album. |

Great song from a great album. I really don't understand how everything ties together just yet (or if it even does) but it's hard to believe Green Day are still making great music like this.
I love the way "Tales of a Broken Home" comes in hitting hard, sort of like the end of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." |
