Harry Chapin – Cats In The Cradle Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song but it makes me so sad. Reminds me of my dad. The dad in the song isn't a bad father, he is just too focused on "grown up stuff" like working and making money to pay the bills. Once he gets home he is too tired to do anything with his son. Finally when he's old and retired he has the time but now the son is the one who no longer has the time.

Whenever I hear this I resolve to not be the son when he grows up. To always have time for my dad now that he's old even though he didn't always have time for me when I was a kid.

She & Him – Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? Lyrics 13 years ago
after seeing the video she appears to be dressed as several forms of dolls or children's toys: baby doll, cow girl, etc and they are all getting murdered lol

I think the song is being sung from the perspective of a child's toy that is no longer used and pleading with the child to come and play and give them life.

Son House – Death Letter Lyrics 16 years ago
I certainly think he killed her because she cheated on him.

"Well, I walked up right close, looked down in her face
Said, the good ol' gal got to lay here 'til the Judgment Day"

To me that sounds almost like he's saying it with malice. She's dead and will now have to be judged for her sins (cheating on him). If she was not a sinner then she would be going to heaven.

"Lord, have mercy on my wicked soul
I wouldn't mistreat you baby, for my weight in gold"

Now we get a hint that maybe he had something to do with her death. Why is he asking for mercy? Why is he wicked? Unless he killed her...

"Well, I folded up my arms and I slowly walked away
I said, "Farewell honey, I'll see you on Judgment Day"

He'll see her on Judgement day because he will be judged for her murder lol...

"You know I didn't feel so bad, 'til the good ol' sun went down
I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around
I didn't feel so bad, 'til the good ol' sun went down
You know, I didn't have nobody to throw my arms around"

He starts feeling regret over his actions.

"I loved you baby, better than I did myself
I said now if you don't have me, I didn't want you to have nobody else"

This one almost comes out and says it that he killed her. Either for adultery...or maybe she just broke up with him and he killed her for that.

"Ah, hush, thought I heard her call my name
If it wasn't so loud and so nice and plain
Ah, yeah
Mmmmmm

Well, listen, whatever you do
This is one thing, honey, I tried to get along with you
Yes, no tellin' what you do
I done everything I could, just to try and get along with you"

This is my favorite part of the whole song and it comes out very well in some versions. He gets spooked and think he hears her voice from the dead come back to haunt him. He then goes to explain to the voice/ghost/his imagination that love makes you do strange things and that's why he killed her.

I think the son saying "I'm gonna be like him" is the child idolizing the father and wanting to be like the father as sort of hero worship. As an adult though that line takes on another meaning because the son does become like the father only it means having the same faults as him (i.e. not spending time with his family putting other things ahead of them)

The song is about a father who never spends time with his son as child. Now the father is an old man and wants to spend time with the son but it is too late, the son turned out just like him and doesn't have time for the old man. Very sad song...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Lyrics 17 years ago
Voodoo Chile and Voodoo Child (slight return) seem to be two parts of the same story, some dude with supernatural powers. Where Voodoo Chile tells the story of the birth/creation and how he got those powers and Voodoo Child (slight return) picks up saying what he can do with those powers. Basically saying "i'm one bad mofo" :D

where did you get the lyrics for this? (yes i realize it is 2 yrs later..) some of the verses seem similar to the final song that he wrote before he died (i.e. the story of life).

Humorous little song that is often overlooked in Jimi's catalog. Kind of reminds me of a Dylanesque song where the characters are doing something absurd.

This is sort of like Ironic by Alanis Morrisette, except all the events in this song are actually ironic unlike in her song....which if you think about it...is ironic lol.

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 19 years ago
Interesting post, but Dylan converted in 1977 and this song was written several years before. I don't know when Dylan wrote the song, but Hendrix covered it in 1968 so it's at least 9-10 years earlier. :)

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it is about the establishment, the man, Mr Jones if you will, not being in touch with the masses (who are all the freaks).

The Mr Jones with the pencil in his hand could be the media. The well read Mr Jones could be intellectuals, etc etc.

Also this part:

And you ask, "Is this where it is?"
And somebody points to you and says
"It's his"
And you say, "What's mine?"
And somebody else says, "Where what is?"
And you say, "Oh my God
Am I here all alone?"

Reminds me of a tom & jerry cartoon when jerry enters a dark alley in the city and eyes start poping out from all the dark places and he realizes that he is in trouble ;)

I love this song for the sole reason that it helped me discover Son House.

This is a great song, but there are plenty of other versions which are great too. I found a website once that traced the history of this song to Ireland...I think. Anyway I love they way they perform it and I also dig the Louis Armstrong version too.
