i'm so glad someone finally added these lyrics! i really love this song. it's not exactly deep, so i don't think talking about the meaning is really necessary, but it's so much fun and i think it's a great first single for allison. i can't wait to hear the rest of her album! |

I've skipped this song most times that I've listened to the album, not because I have anything against this song, but because I love "Head Full of Doubt" so much and I get impatient. But I listened to this today and was really struck by how gorgeous the lyrics are, especially: "I hope that I don't sound to insane when I say There is darkness all around us I don't feel weak but I do need sometimes for her to protect me And reconnect me to the beauty that I'm missin'" I don't think the meaning is too hard to decipher. They are in love, she has brought him out of a dark place, and they are getting married in January. Like the first lines say, they keep it simple ;) And I think this song is really beautiful in its simplicity. |

"Who would you rather be The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?" my first reaction to this line was that she is asking "would you rather burn out or fade away?" i mean, the beatles were certainly not a blip or anything, but they were active for a much shorter time than the rolling stones. a common reaction to the current activity of the rolling stones is that they were great in their prime but are now dinosaurs and should probably give it a rest, whereas people regret that the beatles were around for such a short time and consider their oeuvre to be pretty sacrosanct. the rest of the lyrics fit into this mold, too. "We're so close to something better left unknown" -- should they just quit while they're in their prime, or should they keep going to see if they reach something better? "Get hot, Get too close to the flame" -- how can you judge when you've hit your apex? is it possible to get just close enough to the flame without burning? in the end, i'm not sure which she chooses. "Stay with all the unknown" sounds like they decide to keep moving until they fade out, but the fact that she says "stay" instead of "go" makes me unsure. "Gimme sympathy" is clearly a rolling stones reference, but the fact that the chorus ends with "Play me 'Here Comes the Sun'" makes me think she wants to go the beatles burning-out route. i don't know what the "they" i keep referring to is, haha. possibly the band, possibly a relationship, maybe just a person's life in general. also, i've only listened to this song once so my interpretation might change, but this idea really struck me so i thought i'd share it here :] |

ah, i'm so happy someone posted this! i've been trying to transcribe the lyrics for a while now but never really felt like i had it right. this is pretty close to what i have, except you forgot the last part of the last verse, which i think goes something like this... | i love this song a lot and it makes me sad that no one's commented on it in over a year :[ anyway, i can see where the above comments are coming from but i believe it's about someone with anxiety disorder or an avoidant personality; i can especially see this because that's how i am and i can see where they're coming from. the second verse especially--he's saying even though everyone supposedly cares for him, he still can't bring himself to tell them how he really feels inside. he doesn't trust that they'll be there waiting for him, so he just avoids the whole ordeal. he thinks things would be better off if he just kept to himself and said "goodbye to everyone i know." but in any case, this is a fantastic song and it's permanently stuck in my head :] | |

| i read somewhere that adam said this song is about a girl imagining committing suicide, but in the end choosing to live. she's imagining everyone she knows gathering around and reading the note she wrote, but in the end she's "fast asleep next to me." and also, having a dream about him scraping his hands until they bleed? like maybe she's feeling this way because of him? but whatever this song means, it's absolutely beautiful and has gotten me through some hard times. | |
