Mm, I love this song. It's so sad and beautiful, it captures the way you feel when a relationship ends, like you've stepped out of the shade and the sun's dazzling you and making everything clear. You have no idea why you got with the person in the first place really, and you're a bit upset it didn't work out, but you're still glad to be out. |

Woah ok my bad, I don't know any background to this song at all except that she was travelling around Europe at the time it was written, but I'm not even sure if that's right. About the "folks I dig" thing, it's a really American/Canadian thing to say, I'm probably wrong in thinking she's using it to take the mick, it's just that in Britain no one really says that so it stands out for me. But that probably IS just me. Again, didn't mean any offence at all, I love this song, and the rest of the album. It's confusing tho... |

It's about the past. It's about memories, about nostalgia, about everything you've missed in life and everything you know you should have done. It's about losing yourself in a romance that's so strong it fades away and leaves you with nothing but a bunch of songs.
That's what it means to me anyway :) There seem to be a lot of Beatles references here... like the start sounds like Imagine, some lines were originally John Lennon's... maybe it's just to add to the whole nostalgia thing, for me it makes me think of how it must have been way back when the words "new Beatles album" weren't impossible... wish I'd been born in those days... basically it's about having a relationship with a musician, but it means so much more. I think it does anyway. |

Hmmmm.... I'm torn here. I like the ideas in this version, like having 'The Devil' talking at the start, but in all I prefer the original. The sound is much lighter, it's more believable than this, and Jagger is just incredible.
But I'm glad someone did a cover of it, it just means it's a great song, and everyone thinks so! |

In my opinion this is GNR's best song, no question.
I love the power, it's similar to White Man by Queen in that it sees how futile everything is - wars are only helpful to the rich, who are usually the ones that start them - "It feeds the rich while it buries the poor" - I think "feed" isn't talking about food, it's fulfilling their need for violence and drama, cos their lives are so perfect that they need something bad to balance the good.
If anyone here has read 'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley, it's the equivalent of a VPS treatment, which makes the inhabitants of the utopia desperately sad, so that when they are perpetually happy, they realise it and don't get bored with it.
Ok, I'm gonna stop ranting now. But doesn't everyone just love it when Axl comes in on the line "When everybody's fighting for their promised land"? Ahhh... magic... |

Well, it's about being in love. I guess. It might not even be about the relationship kinda love, just a love for a friend. She likes this guy so much that she calls him a devil, she hates him at the same time, because he's keeping her in "This tourist town" and really she wants to go home, back to cleanliness and "fancy French Cologne".
I really love the way she sings it, especially the Mermaid Cafe verse - what an amazing voice! Also, the claps on the second and fourth beats of each bar really add to the holiday, relaxd atmosphere of the song. Can songs even have atmospheres?
Anyway, that's my rant over. Ignore it, it's a load of bull! :P |

Did Joni Mitchell actually come from California? Cos I almost think that she's making fun of the things that are typical to California, e.g.
The way they talk - "Gonna see the folks I dig"
The Musical background - "...feel good Rock and Roll band" - Beach Boys?
The added instrument in the section that begins - "Oh it gets so lonely" - some kinda keyboard?
Just some thoughts :) But in all, a beautiful song, the first time I heard it I wanted to live in California too! |

It's a vision of the future, like what could happen if we let things get too far. I love the little touches, like "I've just become alive" - can't even explain that, but it sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it, as does the chorous, cos maybe this sounds over-dramatic, but it's the way I feel about myself a lot of the time. |

The whole album is so personal to the band that it kinda makes me upset to hear it, especially the new version with "No Road Romance" - however, this is the highlight, without a doubt.
It's all about being famous - the hazards of it, and the secret life that we rarely see. It carries a message for everyone else too, about getting drunk and going too far.
I think the lost verse DOES fit with the rest of the song, depending on how you take it. It goes really well with the whole 'famous' theme.

I'm not too sure what this song is about, but it's really ironic in some ways... for example, he's an archangel and he's getting a divorce, so how are the rest of us gonna cope?! Did PS ever get divorced? Could be interesting to find out, that would put alot of his songs into context...
Another obvious example of irony is the couplet "He says well this will eat up a year of my life/And then there's all that weight to be lost" - enough said :P
I love the line "Sad as a lonely little wrinkled balloon", it just makes you want to give 'Fat Charlie' a huge hug! It kinda annoys me in a way aswell because the song is so deep, as mentioned by Dead$y, and it's a funny line that takes the seriousness out of the song without really trying... awww, why are some people such good song writers?! Reckon he'd help me with my GCSE composition? Heeheehee... |

Hasn't anyone thought about the link to the Bible? I don't mean to sound like some kind of preacher but I really think that this could be about Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. They travelled through the night ("His path was marked By the stars...", "The pale yellow moon"), he was worried about the baby ("Joseph's face was black as night "), it mentions the dream that he had about leaving Mary ("After the dream of falling and calling your name out "), and "This is the story of how we begin to remember" could be talking about the things the prophets said about Jesus coming.
Also, there is a woman singing with him on this track which could be meant to represent Mary...
Well don't worry if it's totally wrong, just ignore me, I'm only a humble Queen fan that got lost on the way to their page... :P |
