Mason Jennings – Be Here Now Lyrics | 15 years ago |
You've gotta be fucking kidding me . . . How did I not know he has a song by this name? And today and all . . . |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Bleeding Powers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
. . . even though "The Long and Winding Road" is really more Paul's song, isn't it? Well, there goes that theory. But it still sounds like he's talking to someone who fought for peace in his/her life. |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Bleeding Powers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is quite a stretch, but it reminds me of the Beatles song "The Long and Winding Road," because of the chorus, obviously. It seems like the song is being sung to someone who is no longer alive, but when s/he was spoke out for peace. John Lennon? |
The Chicks – Not Ready To Make Nice Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The average comment on songmeanings makes me despair for the human race, because these people so often sound like such bigots and idiots, but this debate is wonderful. It's thoughtful and for the most part respectful. I particularly appreciate the comments by the Bush supporters who also remember the Constitutionally-guaranteed right of every American citizen to speak his or her mind. I have a serious question for you, though: how can you support both free speech and Bush? If you genuinely are interested in preserving free speech in the US, please, please, read up on the policies of this administration. Bush has been subtley stifilng free speech since he entered office. The reason so many people dislike him, and are ashamed to call him our president, or, in the case of the Dixie Chicks, to share a homestate with him, is because, while claiming to be patriotic and to love freedom, he and his administration are undermining the rights and freedoms that make this country great. If you want somewhere to start, look up his "free-speech zones." Something that everyone is fogetting to mention in this whole debate is that it was not a grassroots movement to boycott the Dixie Chicks. As people in this thread have mentioned, it was absolutely the right of those who did so to do so. However, Clear Channel, which is a communications behemoth that owns LOTS of radio stations across the country, made the decision to order all of its radio stations - its DJs - to stop playing the Dixie Chicks. This is, at best, a signal that Clear Channel cares very little about freedom of speech, and, at worst, a very blatant violation of the First Amendment. |
Prince – I Would Die 4 U Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Prince is so unbearably talented it would be most shocking if he weren't in close contact with God. |
Prince – Darling Nikki Lyrics | 17 years ago |
She's not a hooker. There's absolutely nothing in the song to suggest that she's a hooker, unless yall are assuming that women who have kinky sex must all be hookers. Which is a falsehood. |
Joni Mitchell – This Flight Tonight Lyrics | 17 years ago |
So is she leaving him or going to him? My guess is she's leaving him, but I could see it the other way, too, that she's going to see him but that the relationship isn't good. |
Bob Dylan – I'll Be Your Baby Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's a great song. It's absolutely about a one-night stand, or at least a temporary sexual relationship. It sounds to me like they're friends and out of mutual attraction and youthful desire they're going to kick it up a notch for one night. Though this song is infinitely better, it's basically the same set up as Dave Matthews Band's Say Goodbye. |
Scissor Sisters – Tits On The Radio Lyrics | 18 years ago |
God, it's just so true, though, isn't it? There ain't NO tits on the radio! Not anywhere. |
Tom Waits – 9th & Hennepin Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm a big ol' poser, so I don't know Tom Waits the way I should. Is this song about 9th and Hennepin in Minneapolis? |
Pixies – Cactus Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Is it fucked up for a girl to put on the sweatshirt of someone she misses? No? Then why is it "pervy" or "fucked up" for a dude to put on a dress of someone he loves when he misses her? It's about that primal comfort that words and ideas just can't provide. |
The Beach Boys – Don't Worry Baby Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I disagree so strongly with your (misogynistic?) reading of this song, Bad Teeth, that I can't even begin to express it. |
Pinback – Penelope Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh god. This song has the sexiest bassline ever. I have been fantasizing about having slow sex to this song for months. . . . It's about a goddamned goldfish. |
Stars – One More Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Just because it's rough sex doesn't mean the woman is being raped. Just because it's not I'll Make Love to You doesn't mean it's rape. If anyone is being victimized in this song, it's the man. "Please, my love, please. I'll kill who you hate, take off that dress you won't freeze." - That is absolutely the opposite of rape. There is such desperation in this song. They are about to fall into states of absolute misery and are clinging to each other in the hope that it can keep them from it. This song is killer. It is amazing and it will kill you if you're going through a break-up. |
Stars – Sleep Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is gorgeous. It perfectly captures that feeling of incredible lovemaking that lasts all night, when the whole world outside the bed falls away. The one you really don't want to listen to when you're going through a break-up is One More Night (Your Ex-Lover Remains Dead), though. That song will kill you 9000 times a second. Right in the heart. |
The Lovin' Spoonful – Daydream Lyrics | 18 years ago |
No way. Masturbation. |
Imogen Heap – Come Here Boy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is unbearably sexy. |
Beck – Lost Cause Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Baby YOU'RE a lost cause. You are. |
Rent – Seasons Of Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's sentimental, sappy tripe. That might be why you hate it. I'm a huge musical theatre geek, and proud of it. I'm also a closeted Rent hater. It's for my own safety. |
Foo Fighters – Monkey Wrench Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think it means when the people who do you the most harm are also the people you're closest to (which fits in well with being harmed by the person he's romantically involved with). Almost anyone who's been through middle school has experienced the phenomenon of enemies and friends being indistinguishable. |
The New Pornographers – Letter from an Occupant Lyrics | 19 years ago |
But it's CATCHY! So catchy! |
Janet Jackson – Just A Little While Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I don't know if you have other things to do No no no So maybe I'll just lay around Play by myself While touching on my favorite fruit Ooh ooh ooh ooh" Her strategy is amazing. I need to remember that next time my boyfriend has "too much homework" to have sex with me. "Ok, well, I guess, if you're busy, maybe I'll just, ya know, masturbate instead . . ." HAHA! He can't possibly resist. Brilliant. I win. Thanks, Janet. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Song Against Sex Lyrics | 19 years ago |
My first kiss with my boyfriend occurred while this song was playing. We laughed about it at the time, of course, but looking at the lyrics now I find it really interesting. I didn't know the song well then (still don't, really) and had never listened to/read the lyrics, but it crossed my mind that maybe it was some sort of sign that this kissing him thing was a bad idea. At the time I wasn't sure how I felt about him, and it was ostensibly just sexual, or mainly sexual at any rate, but I'm crazy in love with him now. He was a lot more interested in me than I was in him at the time, and he knew the song much better, so maybe he took it as a good sign and just didn't tell me. It's so true that meaningless sex is so bad, and ultimately really not worth it. I'm not making any sense . . . |
Ben Folds Five – Amelia Bright Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Hey now! They truly aren't said the same way. At least, if you're saying my name right it's not said "Amelia." |
Ben Folds Five – Alice Childress Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song was written well before he moved to Australia, I'm almost positive. I think he moved there when he married Fraley Hines (still don't know her name), because she's Australian. |
Semisonic – Secret Smile Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Isn't it "remove this world and its sadness"? The booklet for this CD is about a thousand miles away right now, so I can't look up the lyrics; I'd always thought that's what it was, though. |
Bob Dylan – I Want You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Doubtful. They don't seem to have anything in common beyond a title (and sentiment) and being born in the same decade by artists whose name begins with B . . . HEY now . . . maybe if you play Abbey Road backwards you get the words "Blonde on Blonde" or something . . . |
Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song hurts. |
The Everly Brothers – All I Have To Do Is Dream Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I swear to god this song is about a 16 year old kid masturbating about 10 times a day to the girl he likes, who's probably way out of his league and who he's probably never talked to. Well, even if it's not, it could be, and should be, and now, forevermore, in all your minds, will be . . . bwahahahahaha! |
Semisonic – Completely Pleased Lyrics | 19 years ago |
He says at concerts that this song is about oral sex. |
Atari Teenage Riot – Sick To Death Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It sounds a lot like The Spice Girls' 2 Become 1. I'm serious. |
Ben Folds – Adelaide Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I heard him on Air America a couple weeks ago. He was saying he's just - relatively recently - moved to Nashville from Adelaide because it was too remote and too hard to get stuff done from Adelaide. So you're ALL right. I think these lyrics are some of his most unimpressive, (they're ok, but I've come to expect more from him, lyrically) but I love the song. The bridge is beautiful. |
Motion City Soundtrack – The Future Freaks Me Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
THIS IS THE CATCHIEST SONG IN THE WORLD AND I LOVE IT MORE THAN I LOVE MANY THINGS.I love it even more than creme brulee. |
The Beatles – The Night Before Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Wait, were you correcting her spelling or her understanding of the song? Because I don't get how it's about masturbation if that's what you're saying. |
The Beach Boys – The Warmth Of The Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Quite arguable. I love this song, but I think I have to stick with Don't Worry Baby. |
Her Space Holiday – Something To Do With My Hands Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The South is often referred to as sleepy. It's slow. They speak slowly and in some ways move slowly. It's just a slower culture. |
Texas – Inner Smile Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Are we entirely sure it's not "come on and make your MOVE" rather than "rule"? I could be wrong, I only got the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack today (I'm obsessed with that movie) but it sounds like move to me. Either way, I think I'm going to be obsessed with this song all summer. |
Anti-Flag – Equality Song Lyrics | 21 years ago |
There are some countries, a very few (Canada, for example) that have more genuine racial equality, and most Western countries have more economic equality than the US. My guess would be that there is more gender equality in other Western countries as well. The biggest crime is that much of the inequality in this country is de facto and/or caused by other people exerting their "right" to get rich off the suffering of others, and we pretend if people are unequal it's their own fault. |
The Casualties – For The Punx Lyrics | 21 years ago |
How can a fashion be a way of life? Also, didn't the punk movement start out political? I mean, I know nothing about it, I'm sitting here in Gap jeans, but I'm really curious. |
Bachman-Turner Overdrive – You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet Lyrics | 21 years ago |
so catchy! I love it! |
Ben Folds Five – Where's Summer B.? Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Summer B was Darren Jesse's girlfriend. (Darren was the drummer for BF5.) She's who Song for the Dumped is about. This song is so good! |
Ben Folds Five – Underground Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I've been totally rocking out to this song anytime I've been in my car in the past couple weeks. It didn't hit me until recently how completely excellent it is. As a friend of mine understated, "this song has such a good groove!" |
Ben Folds Five – Song for the Dumped Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This song is about Summer B (yes, as in Where's Summer B?) who was Darren Jesse's girlfriend. (Darren was the drummer for BF5). He never got his black t-shirt back. Or so I hear. |
Ben Folds Five – For Those Of Ya'll Who Wear Fannie Packs Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Basically, Ben Folds is completely hysterical. If you can, try and get your hands on Short Bus Benny. It's only ever been done live, I think, but it's another rap. It's SO unPC and SO the funniest thing you've ever heard. |
Ben Folds Five – Brick Lyrics | 21 years ago |
It could be that she was physically not fine as well. Even with safe, legal abortions performed by actual doctors who know what they're doing (as this one obviously was) there are complications, and sometimes women become sterile because of them, particularly if the abortion was had because of medical reasons in the first place, like a fallopian tube pregnancy or whatever. |
Ben Folds Five – Alice Childress Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I have no basis for thinking this other than the lyrics "no it didn't work out the way we thought it would" and "an arranged marriage is not so good" but is it possible this is about one of his divorces? (Hasn't he been through two? I know Fraley or whatever her name is is his 3rd wife). Plus maybe is it possible that he's in LA and she's still in North Carolina? Cuz in Don't Change Your Plans he talks about LA and in this song he talks about his friends not living in that town, and he also says "it's getting late where you are" and there's a 4 hour time difference between coasts . . . Mostly I just made all this stuff up through obscure links in my own head, but couldn't those be right? |
Bob Dylan – Girl from the North Country Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I've got the booklet. He doesn't say too much about it, but Garrison Keillor played it a few months back and he told the story of Echo. Scarborough Fair is a really old folk song from way before Simon and Garfunkel did their version. |
Bob Dylan – Don't Think Twice, It's All Right Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Oh wow, yeah, that's a great way of looking at it. Obviously the words suggest that it's about a lost love, but I think definitely it can be looked at as talking to oneself too. Very cool. |
Dave Matthews Band – One Sweet World Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I love this song. His lyrics when he gets all philosophical like this are great. (See "Pig," too). Isn't it "If green should slip to grey/WOULD our hearts still bloody beat" though? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I've always heard, and it would make the verse parallel, since later on he asks "would it stop the stepping feet?" |
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Satisfy My Soul Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I LOVE this song! I would be so happy if someone wrote a song like this for me. "You make me feel like a sweepstakes winner" is one of the sweetest lines in the history of music. |
