The meaning is pretty straight forward.

I think this is quite a clever song.
It seems to me, to be about how wayward mankind has gone, and how we (as a species) are blind to our own failings, and to how far we have fallen, from grace.
I think the biggest clue, is the title;, 'South of Heaven', while refering just as easily to the earth as it does to hell, also suggests the ever-decreasing distance between the two.
Basically, we are 'south of heaven', and still heading south... |

I feel that the meaning of this one is somewhere in between cleanestfall's and everyone else's interpretations. I think it is kind of like he knows the relationship is dead, because of his inability to be faithful to her and the thought of her devotion to him makes him feel sick, in light of what he has done.
"Your tears don’t fall they crash around me" is such a good line. There is no louder, more terrible sound than the sound of someone you love crying because
