The Velvet Underground – Head Held High Lyrics 10 years ago
Do the Dog...is that the one where you bend your elbows so your forearms are straight out and then let your wrists flop so your hands dangle and then wiggle your bum?
Anyway my meaning for this song is that you should feel good about yourself whoever you are and whatever you do :)

Everything Everything – Kemosabe Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song, not sure about the video, I think they could have done more with it. Song sounds like it's about the Lone Ranger, maybe it's about a guy that feels like he's the Lone Ranger because he's always on his own?

Semisonic – Act Naturally Lyrics 15 years ago
What a beautiful song. It could be a combination of the two - they're having an affair and she's become pregnant.

Yeah initially I thought it was about a couple having problems but the lyrics are too warm towards her for that to fit! :)

The Magnetic Fields – Grand Canyon Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the simplicity of this song. He's saying, 'I haven't changed, so obviously you still can love me like this since you did before'. You're right about it sounding cranky - it does sound that way. In a way he's right to be pissed off, however I guess people change. Maybe he has too, without realising it.
Stephin Merritt's lyrics are amazing. He must work really hard at them - they're all so evocative. I love the tunes too, especially the ones with electronica-pop on them. I'm so happy I've found the MFs!

The Feeling – Never Be Lonely Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is trying to get across what you're like when you're falling in love. It's basically like going totally insane. You do all the things you shouldn't do and behave completely irrationally, but hey, at least you're not lonely. I think it might also mean that just the feeling of being in love stops you from being lonely. It keeps you company.

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy Lyrics 18 years ago
I actually heard an interview with one of the guys that wrote this on the radio. He said the two of them were in the studio chatting, and had recorded this sample and had it playing on a loop in the background, but didn't have any words for it. Then they started talking about whether you had to be a little bit crazy to be artistic, and the guy that sings just wrote all the words and recorded it that night (I think the guy said it was in one take , and maybe even made the words up on the spot but I couldn't be sure about that). When you read the words through with that story in mind, all the words fit into that idea, of whether you have to be a little bit crazy if you're going to be creative.

Stevie Wonder – Stay Gold Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a beautiful song but doesn't appear on any of the really famous Stevie Wonder albums. I think it must be a later one. I found it on a Stevie Wonder Love Songs album anyway.

I knew the song from the soundtrack of a film called the Outsiders, which starred many members of the original 80s Brat Pack (Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and a bloke called C. Thomas Howell who I haven't seen in anything since). It's a great film, and the song really expresses the final sentiments well.

Apparently Ice Hockey Hair is a slang term for a mullet.

Super Furry Animals – The Man Don't Give A Fuck Lyrics 18 years ago
I've heard that this song contains the most amount of swearwords in a pop song. And apparently it samples Steely Dan.
I think it might have originally been about a specific man in particular, but has evolved to be more about governments in general - I saw them last night and they had a montage of pictures of Bush and Blair and a quote ('All governments are liars and murderers') up before the song started. SFA are great live, by the way :)

What on earth is this song all about? Sounds like something to do with capitalism, might just be a bit of fun.

Yo La Tengo – You Can Have It All Lyrics 19 years ago
I get shivers every time I hear this song. If you listen to it on headphones you can hear that there are actually two guys sharing the ba ba ba ba ba bits, alternating between them, because the bas come through the left then the right earpiece :)

The Beatles – Old Brown Shoe Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the line 'If I grow I'll be a singer, and wear rings on every finger' was some sort of comment about Ringo. Ironically.
One of my favourite Beatles songs, although when I say that I always find out it's a George song afterwards :)

Trademark – Need Some Time Lyrics 19 years ago
The version I've got also has Piney Gir singing. It's excellent, very heartfelt and emotive. Sounds like a classic 'Painful Love/Break-up' kind of song to me.

Elvis Costello – Good Year For The Roses Lyrics 19 years ago
The lyrics for this are pretty self-explanatory, basically about the break-up of a marriage. I think the title comes from the irony that it's been a good year for the roses but a bad year for the couple in the song.

Her Space Holiday – Japanese Gum Lyrics 19 years ago
What a great song. I think the lyrics are pretty much self-explanatory but I love the way they tell a story and the delivery is fantastic. I love the description of how someone gets stuck in a bad relationship too - I'm not sure I've ever heard it put that succinctly before...'It's not like I am weak or that I don't know how to leave, it's just that every time you cheat you bring me closer to defeat'.

Joe Jackson – It's Different For Girls Lyrics 20 years ago
What a great song. I think it's reversing the normal roles in sex - in this song the bloke is the one that wants to take it slow and get to know each other and the girl just wants to do it. I'm not sure who is saying the line 'Don't you know that it's different for girls?' though. It could be the bloke, being shocked that this girl sees things that way, and telling her what his mum told him, which is that it's different for girls.

The Beatles – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Lyrics 21 years ago
I think maybe the 'Julian's Picture' story is true but that doesn't mean the song isn't about LSD, it just means that's where he got the name from. The lyrics are so trippy, it's got to be drugs-related in meaning.

The Beatles – I Will Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't think that can be it, because of the second verse,
For if I ever saw you
I didn’t catch your name.
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the same.
That says that he hasn't met her yet. And the last verse too,
And when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it so loud I can hear you
I think it might be about looking for love, and imagining the person that you're going to find and fall in love with.

Pixies – Here Comes Your Man Lyrics 21 years ago
This song makes me so happy. Although after I've listened to it that riff stays in my head for days.
