has anyone else noticed that the Songmeanings Top 5 is always dominated by angsty relationship songs, aimed at early teens and musically described as 'emo' despite being about as 'emo' as my ass? i think that says a lot about the people commenting on this site. and yes, i see the irony of me bitching about people posting in a post in a message i've just posted, but i just want to see if anyone else is starting to get bored/weary of hormone-fuelled teens thinking that this EmoByNumbers they hear on the radio is the best thing ever and that their favourite songs are 'so all about me and my ex/girlfriend/friend who i love but haven't told. does anyone feel the same as me on this topic? or am i alone? Mx. |

ok, replying to Chronomaitsu, I believe my opinion is valid because of the rising threat of a new breed of music that is starting to spread across the world. It's EBN (or emo by numbers). just in the same way that metal spawned rapmetal and then nu-metal, emo has spawned EBN, which unfortunately everybody, this song most definately is. The are a number of easy steps to figure out if a song is EBN- 1. it's a story of love gone wrong 2. it contains, either in the title or in the lyrics, a reference to something that will give the band some extra credit and make them seem 'just like you' 3. no cursewords or anything even slightly contraversial 4. the song is basically a continual reworking of one simple melody now, i'm not saying that these are bad things but put the four together and you have something that you will be assured american teens across the country will love, cherish and refer to as 'our song' at some point during their first real relationship. remember the points and apply them to some of the so-called emo hits at the moment (or any songs in the songmeanings top 5 list, pretty much) and realise how accurate the points are. now, just to reitterate for the people i'm sure i've annoyed with my opinion, if you think i'm wrong just explain to me what i'm missing. i've posted before on this song and the replies i get usually hang around 'i don't agree with you because you're wrong and i'm right', which is a poor way of backing up a song that obviously means a lot to you. people should realise that EBN is killing emo. and just for the record, 'emo' stands for emotional, and there are more emotions than just missing your girlfriend or being annoyed at being dumped. keep on truckin' so-called-emo kids. i'm sure Jesus loves you all. i don't like it when people bad mouth songs on this site without any good reasons, but I actually have some good reasons. And as it says what does this song mean to you, I have as much rite as anyone else to voice my opinion on this 'epic' love song. so my reasons are thus.. Firstly, I find this song much too personal for people to say they relate to it so much. the lyrics are very specific, which is a good thing, but people then message in and say "oh it reminds me of my ex...". really? they wanted to be a rock star but you were too young? or you thought a jimmy eat world song reminded you of them? Fair enough, pick out bits you like and stuff but I find it slightly niave that people can relate to a song that is about a love affair which is slightly out of the ordinary. Secondly, try seperating this song from any cheese-ballads made in the 80s. you won't be able too. why? because it's cheesy! simple as that! now I'm not saying this is bad either, but I can guarantee that in a few years time, you will deny liking this song as it considered so over the top. Emo has become incredibly trendy and any song where the singer tells a woeful story of a love gone bad etc. etc. gets about a million posts from hormonal teens wishing they too could live lifes like those lived on teen drama serials. anyone could write a song like this - "i loved a girl, then left her, i still love her, she doesn't love me"- but the gift is to ascend past this point of tedium to a stage where your story moves. good lyrics, like "There was hope in me that I could take you there" are few and far between the "you keep me up in bed"'s and the "maybe baby"s. Thirdly the jimmy eat world link is an interesting touch. the reference - "the first star i see may not be a star" is from the song 'For Me This Is Heaven', which is about a relationship. ok? now why reference this? two possible reasons - a) because it is based on fact and therefore is legitimate, b) because it makes the song look better if it mentions an appreciation to a better song. unfortunately though, the problem with this song is just that. it is nine minutes of relatively boring moaning about a far from exciting relationship. you want a real song about loss in a relationship with a pretty tune, listen to J.E.W's 'Roller Queen' or Ben Folds Five's 'Smoke'. now i know that by posting this, i will have upset a number of people who will probably post back by saying how wrong i am and try to contradict everything i've said. but read the banner. what does this song mean to YOU. and i have told you nothing but my opinion, and all you can tell me is yours. please, if you like this song, enjoy and love it. just explain to me why you do, because when i hear this all i hear is nine odd minutes of bland whinging. remember, i'm not right, but neither are you. sweet dreams. this is SO about pinkerton! i mean, look at it... The first bit "sit down...stop the show" is rivers taking control of the situation and making sure everyone is listening, because he's going to keep going whether they are or not. "Yeah If you want me, you can't have me. 'Cause I've heard it, "Please accept me" he's turning down the fans either wanting him as an idol or just generally wanting him, as he's had enough of that sort of thing (also see 'tired of sex') "Back off...take it from me" is the gigolo role that Rivers put himself in, in that being with other people will just drag him down and stop him doing what he wants to do, which ultimately is making music. "If you hate this, I can't blame you because I'm hurting so I'll flame you" - these are the lyrics in the booklet but they mean pretty much the same as above. it is refering to pinkerton. at the time Rivers got a lot of flack from the fans, as it was nothing like the first album so people didn't buy it. he's saying that this album contains the same raw emotion that pinkerton did, without the light sugarcoating like on the green album, so he is expecting people to hate this too. "I've seen this game before my love walks straight to your door there ain't no hope for me anymore" in buying pinkerton people were buying his feelings and emotions (kind of...) so he's saying that he's seen it before. when people buy this album they'll be taking home what he feels, and they'll hate it. so if people hate what he feels, there isn't hope for him. Basically this song is a paranoid attack to everyone that didn't buy or like pinkerton at the time, and now praise it, like xpankfrisst says above. but i mean, how better to start the new album? maladroit is amazing. weezer rock and always have. "Submission for a ladder rung. You decide what you're used for" - his friend is disguising who they are to gain popularity and get further in life. He is saying that it is their choice to give up who they are for a popular cause. "I know what you are, what you are. I see clearly what you are" - it is the friend's choice on how they deal with their image, but he will be their friend whatever because he can see past the visual and actually see who they are. He wants whatever his friend wants to make them happy, but pleads with them to return and not forget about him. "Vacation, you'd take them if you wanted you'd ask them. Vacation, you'd take them if you wanted" - it isn't a case of just wanting to be away, because if they wanted just to go away they'd take a vacation. They wants to be away for a long time, leaving this place behind. "Alone I'm outside, red sky, I wait there, snowfall above me, so new...yet fading" - He obviously hasn't known the person for as long as he'd like to, as he waits for them knowing that this will be one of their last times together. "I didn't know what to say" - never able to think of the right thing to say, he kept the girl waiting, knowing that she would be waiting for a conclusion from him. "Merry Christmas, baby" - trying to make the best out of the situation, he wishes her the best, basically saying that he won't be there again to wish her luck over the coming holiday. 'Hear you me' was a catchphrase of M&C's and he praises their devotion, driving touring bands overnight so they would be where they needed to be on time. Our lives, our coal" - you can either try and change what bothers you (picket) or just sit back and learn to enjoy it (parade), because at the end of the day you have to deal with your life.
