CocoRosie – By Your Side Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is certainly meant in a sarcastic satirical sense. the line, "i try not to cries" is especially telling of this satire. it implies that she will give up even happiness, and will supress her dissatisfaction with her life for this person. however, i think, as with any song or book or text, there is more to be taken from this than simply a straightforward ironic message about suburban living. i think, as a lot of people have been saying, that the song gets at a real desire people have to settle their lives with eachother in a kind of obsessive beautiful sense (the line, "even when you're down and out" has a sweet quality to it). i think there's one level on which the song is critical of domestic married life and another level on which it displays a darker side of love.
