U2 – Please Lyrics 18 years ago
I think you have it backwards, 2861U2...

The song is easily about the violence between the IRA and Britain. The "Devil" in this case, is the deeds being perpetuated on both sides, by people who act in the name of God (they're on their knees). "Get up off your knees" is a plea for people to reach out beyond their religion, to recognize the human bonds that exist beyond religion.

This line sums it up perfectly:

"love is hard and love is tough
but love is not what you're thinking of"

All those who fight this struggle believe they are doing it for God, making a tough battle that is needs to be fought. But regardless of what they think, this is not a fight for the Love of God.

Coldplay – Spies Lyrics 21 years ago
He talks about the communism thing in one of his concerts, but that's not what this song was wriiten about. Chris Martin was joking about how the Chinese government misinterpretted the lyrics as being anticommunist. I think the meaning falls somewhat in line with what blue dissent was saying. Spies are just an analogy for for whatever worries you or gets you down. You can't live like a fugitive to your worries, cuz there will always be more worries lurking around every corner. Just live your life and remind yourself to not let your worries get the best of you.

Doves – The Man Who Told Everything Lyrics 21 years ago
A beautiful song, but I think the meaning goes a little deeper than just as a theme song for the Real World.

To me, "I'm gonna tell it all" is basically him admitting to himself and everyone else that it's over. Once you tell the press, there is no going back.

The lyrics seem to convey a sense of hope with his new situation, but it doesn't sound very upbeat or hopeful at all. His comments on singing with "blue skies ahead" seem to be laced with depressed sarcasm. What he's basically saying is, "I'll be ok, I just need to get away from here." There doesn't seem to be much hope in that, just someone searching for answers, maybe escaping from his problems, hoping that they don't follow him. Anyways, just my own, very personal take on it.

Coldplay – We Never Change Lyrics 21 years ago
One quick addendum...almost 2 months later...

The message in "Everything's Not Lost" would be somewhat of a bittersweet happy ending, where maybe not everyone is happy, but at least content. A more realistic conclusion would "The Man Who Told Everything" by the Doves.

Coldplay – Careful Where You Stand Lyrics 21 years ago
This might sound strange but I agree with both AgathaKavka and Jplay. I think this song is about someone who is desperately in love with someone and although she really cares for him, she doesn't share the same feelings. She feels bad that there is nothing that she can do to help him: she can't make herself love him in return and he realizes this. He doesn't want to see her racked with guilt so "he'll feel better if she wants him to." But even if he can't BE with her, it still helps just to be with her. All he asks is that she be careful with how she treats him because she has the ability to make him feel really good or really depressed.

I always thought the "quiet time" line had one of two meanings. Either sometimes he needs to get away because having her around can sometimes be a painful reminder of what he doesn't have. Or maybe it's his way of saying I need to move on and leave you because the pain of being this close to you without the same feelings in return is just too much.

But either way, the two really do care for eachother, even if the feelings aren't the same, and they will always be looking out for one another.

I just love the last minute or so of this song. His wordless singing captures the pain and heartache of the song better than any words could. He sounds so hollow and empty; as if he were too hurt to even form the words to express himself and all he can get out is an agonizing howl.

Coldplay – Trouble Lyrics 21 years ago
I always interpreted the lyrics in this song in relation to the lyrics from the other songs such as shiver and parachutes. Both of those songs are about being in love with someone who doesn't know and either can't or won't have those same feelings back. "Trouble" is about what happens when those feelings finally come out and how it changes the friendship for the worse. He never meant to damage their relationship. He feels so guilty about it that he wishes he go back and never have developed those feelings for her in the first place. But you can't choose who you fall in love with. It's as if his emotions spun this web that he's caught in.

Coldplay – We Never Change Lyrics 21 years ago
If you take a look a the entire album, you can see how the songs progress through different stages of emotions over a particular person.

To me, Shiver and Parachutes are both about liking someone who likes you only as a friend, but letting them know that you'll always be waiting for them if their feelings ever change ("I'll be waiting in line just to see if you care").

Yellow is a song of complete devotion for this one person (i go more in depth on that one in another post).

Sparks and Trouble are both about how things aren't the same once these emotions are out in the open. It's tough for friends to be the same when one has these emotions for the other, and both of these songs are about realizing that a little too late and just wanting to back to the way it was. ("if I ever caused you trouble,
I never meant to do you harm").

This song is about accepting the fact that it doesn't always work out. I want to be with you, and I also want to fly. But we never change so what's the point of hoping for something that is not going to happen. The uplifting aspect of the song is that despite all the things we want but can't have, there are still some good things out there that we can still have, like having friends and living where the sun comes out. Basically it's about not letting the unattainable things in life bring you down. Which leads perfectly into the last track on the album...

Everything's Not Lost is about realizing that you can be happy without getting everything you want. Sure you might have some heartbreaks but there is always a silver lining, and if you don't see it you're just not looking at the big picture.

Sorry to comment on the whole album in this post, I wanted to get it out there in one connected, coherent thought, so I figured I might as well post it under this song, since it's my favorite off the album. Also, this is simply my viewpoint of the album because I went through almost the exact same thing. Someone else might have gone through something completely different and could still connect really well with the album. And that's why Coldplay quickly became one of my favorite bands, because their lyrics seem to speak so well to so many different people.

Radiohead – Exit Music (For a Film) Lyrics 22 years ago
Has anybody ever heard anything to the rumor that the background noise towards the end of the song is a sound clip from a black box on a plane that crashed. Just something a friend passed along to me. I doubt there's any truth to it as that would be kind of tasteless and insensitive, but it would fit the tone of the song. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics 22 years ago
Since the first time I heard this song I always interpreted it the same way, but I didn't realize how different my interpretation was until I read some of these comments.

To me, this is a song of complete and total devotion. I do everything for you, whatever the reasons behind it. "I wrote a song for you" and that's what's important, not the title. If you really need a title..I don't how about ummm... Yellow. It could've been called "Salad Tongs" and it still would've had the same meaning. "I jumped across for you" and my reasons behind that are irrelevent also. But if you really need a reason, it is because "you were all yellow."

I've always interpreted ithose lines as being false reasonings for doing things for someone. It's kinda hard to explain in writing but put yourself in a situation with someone you liked and you wanted to do something for them (it could be small, like giving them a ride somewhere or helping them out with something), for no reason other than because you really liked them. You might feel compelled to give them a reason for doing so ("I was headed that way anyway" or "you helped me out before"). The excuse might be total B.S. and that might be obvious to both of you, but the excuse makes the act seem less extreme.

It doesn't sound as good if it's put into such analytical terms but hopefully you get the gist of it. I don't know, this might just be incoherent rambling, just my thoughts on it though.

For some reason nobody knows of this song, but I think it's his best work as a solo artist. A very uplifting song, in a very sarcastic tone. It definitely has a Beatles flavor to it though.

This song is about LA and all the bullsh*t that surrounds Hollywood and movie stars. End of story. Courtney Love Rocks!!!

This is my friend's comment not mine, but it's a good song nonetheless.

Aimee Mann – Wise Up Lyrics 22 years ago
If anyone here has seen Great Expectations (the one with Ethan Hawke and Gwenyth Paltrow) the song seems to fit that movie pretty well too. One of the main themes was that even though she would break his heart, he still pursued and thought about her for years, ignoring the inevitable (it's not what you thought, when you first began it). In the end he was the cause of his own depression because he chose to pursue even though he knew the outcome. But at the same time, he really didn't have a choice: "ain't love grand" as Nora said.

To me this song is about not being able to go on with the way things are. If you can't move forward and you can't change direction, just give up and accept the way things are.

Kenna – Hell Bent Lyrics 22 years ago
The video was an animated short film called "more" by Marc Osborne (hence the word "more" as the final shot), it was nominated for an oscar for best animated short a few years ago. The music was originally by New World Order, called "Elegia." You can check out the original on ifilm.com (not sure if it's still there or not, though). Kenna said in an interview that he knew someone who knew Marc Osborne and that the video seemed to fit perfectly for the song, they didn't even have to do much editing, and if you compare the two you probably won't notice much of a difference.

If anyone can find the original movie in mpeg or avi or something can you please post it here, I've been looking forever for it.

On a different note, This CD is one of my favorites of all time. I dl'ed it last summer after i saw the video and i've probably listened to it at least 200 times since then. For some reason I never seem to get tired of any of the songs. My favorites are "Sunday After You," "Man Fading," and "Vexed and Glorious." All of these are second, of course, to "Hellbent"

To the people who really seem to connect with these lyrics (you know who you are), what other songs do you put in the same category as this song, lyrically speaking.
Some other songs I recommend checking out are:

Save Ferris - Let Me In
Aimee Mann - Wise Up, One, Save Me
The Beatles - It's only love, You've got to hide your love away
The Lucy Nation - Alright

These are just a few songs that I tend to put on the same playlist as Creep. Any other suggestions?

Save Ferris – Let Me In Lyrics 22 years ago
I feel this song is about loving someone who sees you as just a friend and has no idea about your true feelings. And no matter how good of a friend they are it would never be enough to make you truly happy.

"It was all that I wanted from you
It was something you never knew"

Radiohead – Creep Lyrics 22 years ago
What I love about this song, is that it seems to take on two completely different meanings depending on the mood I'm in. When I first heard it I thought it sounded sarcastic, as if he were writing her off because she thinks she's "so fucking special" and he's sick of her making him feel like he "doesn't belong here."

Then I starting listening to it differently and it now seems to mirror my life perfectly. It's a love song for all of us who have little or no self-esteem or self-confidence--those of us who hope the best for the ones we love because we have little hope for happiness ourselves. The line "I want you to notice when I'm not around" epitomizes this song in my opinion
