Norah Jones – Wish I Could Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is such a lovely song. It seems to speak of some sort of love triangle. Two friends may have fallen in love with the same man. |
Lauryn Hill – Adam Lives in Theory Lyrics | 17 years ago |
As I listen to this song, the image that comes to my mind is of this leader/expert of theology & religion that has what he’s sees as great intellect. I think of this person who makes it his mission in life to disprove or dissect anything only to put himself in the position of being the most knowledgeable of everything. And it works for him. It works so much that people are convinced. As a result, he gathers a great number of followers. But the truth of the matter is that his mission is perverted because he only seeks to serve himself. He has perverted the ideas in such a way that they are sprinkled with just enough facts to appear solid. But there is nothing about this man or his ideas that are divine. The core of who he is wicked. To those who are out of touch with their spirituality, and even to those who think that they are, everything about his ideas is appealing. To them it’s new and attractive. But they are blind to the fact that his ideas are false. In his selfish pursuit of worldly knowledge, he has managed to ignore the true higher power, Jesus. He has forgotten that the reason why he breathes is because of the Lord. No man should put himself in the place of God. The rest of the song speaks to the lost souls that he has claimed, and eventually the fall of mankind who has been deceived. As they are falling, there is the resounding: Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now But there is a reward for those who kept their hearts on the Lord. Those who rejected the deception… But that’s just my interpretation. |
K-Ci and Jo Jo – Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song was on the soundtrack of the movie dramedy named "Life". It has similariities to the movie 'Shawshank Redemption'. This song is obviously about unexpectantly being sentenced to life in prison. There is also room for other interpretations. The vocals are on point. |
Soundgarden – Blow Up the Outside World Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Dear azathothvurf, You are a spanish-speaking dickhead. While it's lovely that you value your own precious interpretation of this song, the point of this site is for us to relate to one another...with our common ground being that we all would like to appreciate and understand what these songs mean to every person who cares to contribute. There is a bit of irony and humor in you attempting to use a language, that's so widely used, to convince yourself that you are somehow elite. It is no accident that this site was developed in the ENGLISH language. If you want your translation to be your own, write it in your diary...and then uphold it as your own best piece of literature ever...except not really. |
Diana Ross – Love Child Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Great song on waiting for the sanctity of marriage..and the repercussions of not. |
Prince – Mountains Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Some of you kiddies probably have never seen the video to this song. Let me tell ya, Prince was awesome in all of his purple glory! Great song about overcoming seemingly insurpassable obstacles. |

The Strokes – Last Nite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I said I heard a live version of this song where he actually sang the above. |
The Walkmen – Brandy Alexander Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love the rhythm of this song...Caribbean maybe? A great tune to drink to at a backyard BBQ. It's one of those tunes that you hear in between sips as you wiggle your shoulders back and forth. You pause and ask whoever's nearby, 'Hey, what song is this? Nice groove, huh.' And just as quickly as you asked, you're back to engaging in the festivities...shoulders still slightly wiggling, but your mind is now elsewhere. So...Brandy Alexander can be many things. But, for me, the interpretation of this song is about the writer's affair with 'Brandy Alexander', the alcoholic drink...the indifferent, slightly deceptive, confidant. As I listen to this song, I can imagine the character sitting back and enjoying his somber decline as the liquor overtakes him. Alcohol is a depressant that is widely known for potentially taking us on a twisted journey. Dark thoughts, that we generally suppress when we are sober, slowly rise to the surface. Ironically, this comforts him for no reason other than the fact that it just feels good...the alcohol, that is. The whole second stanza nails this whole concept for me. Especially as he makes references to burning and fire, which are sensations that are felt when drinking hard liquor. Also, when he says, "I see it through your eyes...There's worse ways of getting here. You don't hear me complaining." But all 'good' things come to an end when Brandy snatches the upper hand, the 'harmonious' relationship abruptly ends ...and yada yada yada...you wake up on the bathroom room floor wondering how you got there. ;) |
Devendra Banhart – Will Is My Friend Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Wow. Nice translation couldBanyone. |
The Strokes – Last Nite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Shallow and stupid. "So I , I turn around I baby don't care no more I know this for sure I'm gonna shit on your floor Yeah.." I'm gonna shit on your floor? Seriously? I heard a live version of this song where he actually sang the above. Julian Casablancas is/was an arrogant drunk fuck who should stop writing and stick to singing. This song should be offensive to anyone who consider themselves music lovers. It's deceptively catchy until you take a closer look. "...The hook brings you back, I ain't telling you no lie.." -Blues Traveller |
The Walkmen – Another One Goes By Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yeah I know. Some of the words are slightly different, not that it matters...but it kind of does. Besides, Mazarin had only released the song, not even quite a year, before the Walkmen decided to cover it...and of course made a song, that would have otherwise remained obscure, somewhat popular. That gives them a bit of credit. I've actually heard both versions...and...well while Mazarin's is good...call me biased but the Walkmen's version is much better. Whether the words were writtin by them or not, the Walkmen put their stamp on it... and that's good enough for me. |
The Walkmen – Another One Goes By Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Thanks. I agree about finding another who can really appreciate what these guys have to say and how they deliver. I've actually searched through their song lyrics to see what you specifically had to say. :) |
The Walkmen – Another One Goes By Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love the poetic way in which this band writes their songs. "Is your skin your skeletons" almost implies that his life driving force is what most people have the ability to hide (skeletons in the closet). Instead he is forced to openly display his fear, insecurity and shame. When he mentions the shadows flying across the wall, I can just imagine him sitting in an unlit room, in broad daylight, with the shutters slightly open. When the sun is shining in at a certain angle, it picks up any form that may be outside of his window. In the distance or up close, the light produces some sort of shadowy figure. The shadows become his world because he is so afraid to step out into the real one. This song makes me think of a person who is who is desperately longing for a relationship, friendship, or simply some intimate way to connect with others. It seems as though there have been opportunities that may have come his way. In the moment, he convinces himself that he could possibly break his lonely mold. But unfortunately because of his inability to truly value and believe in himself, he never takes the chance to reach out to those who may have made themselves available to him. So, yet again, he fails..."and another one goes by." |
Tapes N Tapes – Omaha Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Man this song rocks. It has an awesome ethereal quality...which makes me think that it is a dream. Now I guess it can be taken literally, since the name of the song is Omaha. He could be singing about some place that gives him warm and fuzzy feelings. Because of the simplicity and mundanity of the place, he feels as though he has a special, and almost strange, appreciation for it. Whatever happened there gave him a unique sentiment. Perhaps he is either purposely dreamming or anticipating going back to this lovely place ("aiding my fall, I'll be long gone). It's his personal oasis and he wants to live in it as long as he can. Or you can take everything that I said and apply it to a woman. :) |
Jill Scott – My Petition Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Actually...why would she be so literal...and actually why would she want to love the government? Hmmmm? :) |
Oasis – Hey Now! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about how you choose to let your past define you. "Feel no shame, cos time's no chain." |
The Wood Brothers – One More Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song caught me off guard. I discovered it from Paste magazine and originally thought that it was a catchy little ditty. Before I even began listening to the lyrics, the music and the tempo immediately adjusted my mood in a positive way. When I began to listen to the lyrics, I was pleasantly suprised to hear such encouraging words. It's interesting how sometimes songs can just be so right...if that makes sense. This is one the finer moments of bluegrass. |
Jude – Love Letters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Jason Mraz wish he was Jude. No seriously, this song is great. Another underrated talent. To me, this song is about a poet who has a knack for capturing the 'lovely moments' of others, but has never had the pleasure of experiencing a real life love affair of his own. Each stanza is a brief moment in time. |
The Beatles – The Fool on the Hill Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Does this song remind anyone else of the music from the cartoon Charlotte's Web? |
Queen – Under Pressure Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is so great. It obviously can be interpreted may ways, but Child Of Music and prilla1206 really enlightened me. I like the idea of the one trying to convince the other about the whole concept of love. I originally thought that this song was about the narrator's reluctance to come out of the closet due to society's blatant distaste for homosexuality...'burns a building down..splits a family in two....watching some good friends screaming let me out'. The line that says that love is such an old fashion word seems to once again suggest that many have such a narrow view of what it means to love...like there's some kind of engraved blueprint that dictates exactly who we should love, how we should love, when we should love, where we should....well you get the point. Anyway it says it all in these two lines: 'And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night. And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves.' Whatever the meaning may be, this song is quite thought provoking, cleverly constructed, and very beautiful. |
Jude – Asshole Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's weird. I almost want to feel sorry for this guy who admits that he is an asshole to women. I guess that this song is full of regret. He's knows how manipulative and how much of a coward he is...and hates those traits about himself. Instead of changing for the better, he chooses to surround himself with people who only admire him on a very superficial level. Relationships without substance. A life without substance. |
OutKast – 13th Floor/Growing Old Lyrics | 19 years ago |
You're right. This is a great song. He's seems to be talking about not being superficial and accepting people for who they are, and who they will become. Not only that, but time eventually heals wounds and makes us wiser. |
Audioslave – The Last Remaining Light Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I like katiemac85's interpretation. But, here's my take: I think this song is about a person who knows that death in inevitable. In many cases, doom, fear, and everything else hopeless is associated with death. However, 'the last remaining light' for the narrator is the fact there is a heaven waitng for him. In an otherwise doomed predicament, the only glimpse of hope at his darkest hour is that his end is not really the end. |
Natalie Merchant – Frozen Charlotte Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Or...maybe it's a dour take on you stealing my name!!!! I kid. :) |
Oasis – Don't Look Back in Anger Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song almost seems to self righteously say, 'We all knew what we were getting into so none of us are allowed to have regrets.' Have you ever seen the movie Almost Famous? The lyrics remind me of the 'relationships' that the die hard groupies formed with the band members. When they were together, they partied...I mean they absolutely had a blast. They even played with the idea of loving one another within the moment...no matter how unrealistic. The lesson was that no one is immune to emotion. You can't play that way and not expect to get burned. Somebody will hurt. But Noel, seemingly hardened by his carnal desires (no pun intended), says "'Cause you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out ". In other words, not me...at least not this time. |
Jack Johnson – Cocoon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Yeah this is definitely a break up song. But rarely do you ever find one that is as sweet as this one.... Well bittersweet. |
Maroon 5 – Sunday Morning Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Thanks for killing the song for me giselitapr. I never used to hear that girl. Now I hear that damn girl everytime I listen to the song. lol |
Erykah Badu – Green Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
You know, maybe her past love has moved on to another leaving her eyes green with envy. Green eyes = The Green eyed monster...Jealousy. She says it's because she it's a lot of vegetables because..well... who wants to admit to being jealous. |
Groove Armada – Hands of Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is a great song. Relationship stuff. She broke up with him for reasons that were clearly apparent to the both of them. He's taking the blame..right or wrong. Collateral turned me on to this song too. I was like whoa...who's singing this? Great stuff. |
Jack Johnson – Symbol In My Driveway Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Oh and to answer your question-yes i know what it means. I interpreted the phrase 'phosphorescent secret' as a metaphor, hence the nuclear war reference, which usually involves the use of the A-bomb, that generally leaves an afterglow. By the way genius, did you write this song? Uhkay. I didn't think so. |
Jack Johnson – Symbol In My Driveway Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I honestly don't understand why you are throwing a fucking hissy fit. Surely before you posted you read the question that asked, "What does this song mean to you?" |
The Sundays – Summertime Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree TK. I just finished listening to the song a few minutes ago. I must have heard this song a million times, but it's the first time that the ending resonated with me. Interesting that it hit you the same way. |
Jack Johnson – Symbol In My Driveway Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree with a bit of everyone's opinions. I definitely think that this song is socially and very politically conscious. He seems to refer to the mentality of 'our guy' Bush. Jack makes references to "weapons of mass destruction" , nuclear war (phosphorescent secret), genetic cloning (a perfect set of blueprints), and of course his dear old dad, Osama and family, and his bro with the governor status (million dollar friends). He may be referring to his pot smoking days when he mentions the ziplock bag. But, I also think that he's calling Bush a dumbass. I mean, if you put in terms of lack of productivity, it makes perfect sense. |
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Stand Alone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
He's breaking it off with her and she's obviously the guilty party. He talks of how she used her beauty as a form of manipulation and how he was burned countless times. |
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Keep On Moving Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Now this here is what people don't want to talk about. This is what redemption song is really about..the stripping away of the humanity of a race. |
Bob Marley and the Wailers – One Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
All in One yall...all in one. Peace |
OutKast – Spread Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Come on now. You know that this song about well...you know..that I know...that you know...that we know...that we just want to fuck. |
OutKast – Roses (feat. Big Boi) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Uh..Correction. Down to Mars means that she is a cut above the rest. The down to earth girls are the gold diggers. He said that real guys want real down to mars chicks. If you are down to mars you are on a different level of consciousness. But you have to be a real guy to really understand that "Down to Mars" is a good thing baby. |
OutKast – Prototype Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree. Damn you are so right. I gave this song to a potential love interest. Long story short, we've been happy ever after. |
OutKast – Ghetto Musick (feat. André 3000) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Are you guys crazy? This song has plenty of meaning. "Climbing out this hole With a frown on my face In the place to be, and not to be at the same time" With much respect to his roots, he's talking about people's tendency to judge Outkast by attempting to lock them into a certain genre of music. Just because they came from the hood, people think that they should be thugs and all about hip hop. Just because they rap, people want to pigeonhole them as 'rappers'. Well they're not, they are artists. When he says, "I just want you to know how I feel", he's basically saying what does it matter how the package is presented, I just want the freedom to express myself through music in a way that feels good to me, without all of the labels. You guys need to take another listen. |
OutKast – Unhappy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Let me first say that Big Boi is an excellent lyricist. These lyrics are so sparse yet so dense. He has several messages interwined in this short song. It's a message to all of the so called thugs who think that it's "summertime and the living and easy". These are the ones who are out there on the streets making quick money and living the high life, with 'friends' and material possessions. All is well is until they get caught. It's too late when they realize that when all of those things disappear, they are left to face the music.... alone. He's also telling us, by sharing his violent and sad childhood, that life is going to throw several curve balls at you. Instead of crumbling under the devastion and sadness, you must perservere through it all. |
Modest Mouse – One Chance Lyrics | 19 years ago |
'Unwittingly existentialist'? That is an interesting observation. But, wow, very true. Touche' pussycat. |
The Walkmen – Bows + Arrows Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song represents the willingness to wipe the slate clean. As I mentioned in another post, this whole album has taken us through the course of a rocky relationship: the anger, hurt, pain, regret, the foolishness, jealousy, revenge, redemption, and in this particular song forgiveness. They've been through the worst and now realize that there's nothing left to do but to finally listen to one another and make amends....and perhaps start over. Great song. |
Devendra Banhart – This Beard Is for Siobhan Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What a fun and playful little song! It purposely makes absolutely no sense...and that's a good thing. It reminds me of what happens to children when they're so giddy with joy and happiness. Their delightful intensity causes you to temporarily fear that they may burst at any given moment. Great song. |
Devendra Banhart – Will Is My Friend Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song gives me a very nostalgic feeling. It literally seems to be an ode to a long lost great friend. As he sings, he's reminiscing on the good times while contemplating the thought of revisiting his old friend. He also appears to ponder what exactly happened that caused so much lost time to pass between them. I love the way he describes his experiences and the visually enticing moments that trigger memories of his friend. Devendra is a hidden treasure. |
Stone Temple Pilots – Lady Picture Show Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I know exactly what you mean. The melody has a sixties rock band sound to it. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Warm Tape Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Are me2817 and I the only ones who think that this song is sexy? It seems to be about the difference between sex and love, and the pleasure of making both intertwine into one. Depending on who you ask some may think that the two are separate entities. The whole first verse seems to refer to lovemaking..'Shiver, Deliver, Pushin...right thru you, you won't be sorry.' In the second verse...'Quiver...give me your head and shoulders.' When he says "Sleeping next to you and I'm in your dream," it reminds of the aftermath of a great lovemaking session...when you literally have sugar plums dancing in your head immediately after the act. Need I say more? Now before you go calling me a horndog, let me explain. What he is expressing is quite lovely actually. He talks about the joy of sex...as well as the greater joy of true love. He'd obviously rather have both, but if he had to choose he'd "Settle for love." |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Tear Lyrics | 19 years ago |
'This is my time this is my tear', I think that this song is about everyone's opportunity to make a positive difference, while they are on this earth, by touching the lives of others in some way shape or form and reveling in the beauty of it all. 'Comin' on strong Baudelaire ' But while trying to make a positive change, you are always being confronted by evil and opposition. Most people seem to thrive off of what is considered wicked and sinful. But sometimes wicked deeds provide instant gratification, which can cause temptation to even the most devout saint. As a result there is a constant struggle to be a good person and live a decent life. I know that many people believe that the Peppers are opposed to 'organized' religion, but in many of their songs, they make a lot of spiritual references. Especially in the verse, 'In the end All will be forgiven when Surrender rises high and I Gave what I came to give' VeniceQueen summed it up well when she said "and it seems to go on about how we are all going to heaven in the end..because all will be forgivin". I'm not claiming to be right. It's just my take. |
