Fishbone – Party at Ground Zero Lyrics 10 years ago
There's a cool video for the song based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque Of The Red Death (except instead of the red death, the mask reveals nuclear war).

Also, the instrumental part at the beginning seems to be based on music from the opera Carmen. Very cool.

The Decemberists – The Sporting Life Lyrics 10 years ago
This reminds me of high school football and how seriously many communities take it. In some places in Texas, it's pretty much the center of town life.

The part about the father hoping his son would fulfill his athletic aspirations reminds me of all the parents who want to live vicariously through their athletic kids. It's kind of sad if you think about it.

Soundgarden – Rowing Lyrics 11 years ago
The deceptively monotonous, murky bass-driven nature of the track makes it seem like it would really fit well on the second half of Down on the Upside.

submissions
Everclear – Jackie Robinson Lyrics 11 years ago
Is this song cheesy? Undoubtedly. A little exploitative? Possibly. Is it catchy and downright feel good anyway? Absolutely.

submissions
The Beatles – Taxman Lyrics 11 years ago
You're right, Imagine was an evil song because of its calling of people to turn away from God (though it wasn't atonal. It had a beautiful melody).

The Adverts – Gary Gilmore's Eyes Lyrics 11 years ago
Actually, Gilmore isn't the last person to be shot in Utah. There were firing squad executions in 1996 and 2010.

submissions
Failure – Heliotropic Lyrics 11 years ago
The bass is so infectious.

submissions
Alice in Chains – Hate To Feel Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this track is the most harrowing on one of the most harrowing albums in rock history. I actually had no idea about Layne's relationship with his father before reading some of the comments above but it seems like a reasonable interpretation.

Quarashi – Malone Lives Lyrics 12 years ago
Karl Malone?

Soul Coughing – Blame Lyrics 12 years ago
At first, I would always hear it as "throw the runner out". Maybe I've been watching too much baseball.

submissions
Stereolab – Jenny Ondioline Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is very, very, very similar to Hallogallo by Neu! (apart from one being an instrumental).

submissions
Neil Young – Alabama Lyrics 12 years ago
Tell us how you really feel, Neil.

submissions
Doves – Kingdom of Rust Lyrics 12 years ago
Based on the first three lines of the song, it seems like it's going to be a song about 9/11, but that just doesn't really fit the rest of the context of the song, in my view.

submissions
Daniel Johnston – Spirit World Rising Lyrics 12 years ago
I believe it's "purple robes", not "purple rose".

submissions
deadmau5 – Sofi Needs a Ladder (feat. SOFI) Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't know why, because they're very coarse and sarcastic, but the vocals in this song are very sexy. Kind of in the same way Adele's are.

submissions
Fenway Park – Letter Lyrics 12 years ago
The lead singer of the band used to be in a band with somebody who died in a fire (and to whom the album is dedicated), so this song is an obvious tribute to him.

submissions
Soundgarden – Uncovered Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that's called "chiasmus", if I remember correctly from high school English.

submissions
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks Lyrics 12 years ago
I like to sing this song to my pet rats, but I change the lyrics to make it non-violent.

submissions
Daniel Johnston – Foxy Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this was Daniel Johnston's finest moment.

submissions
Daniel Johnston – Circus Man Lyrics 12 years ago
I really think the last line kind of ruins the idyllic nature of the song (although the lyrics really aren't as innocent as one might think upon first listen).

submissions
Dream Theater – This Dying Soul Lyrics 12 years ago
The line "Brace yourself man" comes from the Bible; late in the book of Job, God says "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me" a couple times. The context of this part of Job is the all-powerfulness of God and helplessness of man. I think this fits in well with the context of the song/AA suite.

submissions
Soundgarden – Boot Camp Lyrics 12 years ago
I've found that this is a fitting song to listen to at about 7 am, driving home from an all night shift as the sun comes up.

submissions
Big Wreck – West Virginia Lyrics 12 years ago
I wonder if it's about a realization that somebody is not who they expected, and is more "West Virginia" than "Virginia", since West Virginia is often perceived to be more of a backwoods, rural place.

submissions
Dream Theater – Voices Lyrics 12 years ago
Does anybody else think this song might have been inspired by A Portrait of the Artist of a Young Man by James Joyce?

submissions
Ben Folds Five – Uncle Walter Lyrics 13 years ago
More generally, the focus is on Walter being a hypocrite.

submissions
Blind Melon – No Rain Lyrics 13 years ago
I've suffered from severe depression before and at times I would just sleep away my days in the hopes I would either not wake up or that it would just go away when I woke. That selection struck a chord with me.

Black Stone Cherry – Peace is free Lyrics 13 years ago
When I saw BSC live, I noticed that one of the guys had a tattoo with a peace sign and the name of this song.

Rollins Band – Liar Lyrics 13 years ago
The Beavis and Butthead version of this is funny.

Zero 7 – Somersault Lyrics 14 years ago
What on earth does the encouraging of ice cream have to do with anything? That doesn't seem that special.

submissions
Muse – United States of Eurasia/Collateral Damage Lyrics 14 years ago
Yes, there is the Bohemian Rhapsody/Queen influence, but I also detect an influence from the string music theme heard in Lawrence of Arabia (one of the best films of all time).

submissions
The Lonely Island – We Like Sportz Lyrics 14 years ago
Are you sure? I simply don't get that vibe.

submissions
Morningwood – Snobby Little Elf Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think these lyrics are quite right, and I have not the slightest clue what this is about, but every time I listen to this song, the part where Chantal sings "Hey... this is strange" doesn't escape my head the rest of the day.

submissions
Morningwood – Bipolar Bear Lyrics 14 years ago
This song gives me a knowing smile, since I used to have a bit of a tendency to get involved with women with "issues".

submissions
Kyuss – El Rodeo Lyrics 14 years ago
I absolutely love the guitar intro here and the chugging bass throughout.

submissions
Dream Theater – Hell's Kitchen Lyrics 15 years ago
Not DT's best instrumental; I prefer Ytse Jam, DoE or even Stream of Consciousness.

submissions
Dream Theater – Scarred Lyrics 15 years ago
I think there may be something to the whole questioning God theory, ending with perhaps a more "positive" resolution than, say, Blind Faith.

You tell me I'm wrong
I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
I show you my hands
You don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn.

Perhaps he feels that he's done so much for God and feels that he's received nothing tangible in return. Maybe "leave me here to burn" is an almost taunting reference to Hell.

Dream Theater – The Best of Times Lyrics 15 years ago
Another thing that came to mind today: The part of the song right before/as the first vocals kick in remind me of Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John. There are other similarities; a very minor, Gothic beginning followed by an upbeat, almost ecstatic guitar riffs, lyrics about death, similar song length..

Dream Theater – Metropolis, Pt. 1: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" Lyrics 15 years ago
Believe it or not, the Kansas City Royals baseball team play the main guitar riff at the beginning of their home games.

submissions
Dream Theater – The Best of Times Lyrics 15 years ago
For the second straight album, the second to last song on the album is bringing a tear to my eye (like Ministry of Lost Souls did). And I can count the number of times I've cried in the last few years on one hand most likely.

submissions
Black Stone Cherry – Junkman Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is written about the Trash Can Man, a pyromaniac in The Stand by Stephen King. The godlike powers remind me of Randall Flagg, his evil boss.

submissions
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll Lyrics 15 years ago
This sounds like a Shiny Toy Guns song.

The Lonely Island – We Like Sportz Lyrics 15 years ago
The only funny part at all is the thing about watching sports with girls, which is completely true.

Black Stone Cherry – Peace is free Lyrics 15 years ago
I saw them tonight, and Chris explained what it was about, but I couldn't understand what he was saying. Before the song, he talked about how the band had spent a lot of time touring in Europe and how good it felt to be home, especially in the Midwest.

System of a Down – Thetawaves Lyrics 15 years ago
Rhapsody has all kinds of misspellings. I would read nothing into that.

submissions
Dream Theater – Repentance Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that I hear the phrase "the unforgivable sin" somewhere in the quotations in the middle of the song, although it's not listed above.

submissions
Why? – These Few Presidents Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, the few presidents in the wallet are very obviously money. No debate there.
I think what it means when he says that they (the bills of money) "can persuade no god" is that nothing at all can change/reverse death.

Queens of the Stone Age – 3's & 7's Lyrics 15 years ago
I really do think it's about the hospital lore, regardless of whether or not the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are represented in the video. It's funny that every song on this site is either about the Bible or drugs.

submissions
Queens of the Stone Age – Quick And To The Pointless Lyrics 15 years ago
I was playing this album at work and one of my bosses came by as this song came on and made a very weird face.
