Fishbone – Party at Ground Zero Lyrics

There's a cool video for the song based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque Of The Red Death (except instead of the red death, the mask reveals nuclear war).
Also, the instrumental part at the beginning seems to be based on music from the opera Carmen. Very cool. |

The Decemberists – The Sporting Life Lyrics

This reminds me of high school football and how seriously many communities take it. In some places in Texas, it's pretty much the center of town life.
The part about the father hoping his son would fulfill his athletic aspirations reminds me of all the parents who want to live vicariously through their athletic kids. It's kind of sad if you think about it. |

Soundgarden – Rowing Lyrics

The deceptively monotonous, murky bass-driven nature of the track makes it seem like it would really fit well on the second half of Down on the Upside. |

Everclear – Jackie Robinson Lyrics

Is this song cheesy? Undoubtedly. A little exploitative? Possibly. Is it catchy and downright feel good anyway? Absolutely. |

The Beatles – Taxman Lyrics

You're right, Imagine was an evil song because of its calling of people to turn away from God (though it wasn't atonal. It had a beautiful melody). |

Alice in Chains – Hate To Feel Lyrics

I think this track is the most harrowing on one of the most harrowing albums in rock history. I actually had no idea about Layne's relationship with his father before reading some of the comments above but it seems like a reasonable interpretation. |

Soul Coughing – Blame Lyrics

At first, I would always hear it as "throw the runner out". Maybe I've been watching too much baseball. |

Doves – Kingdom of Rust Lyrics

Based on the first three lines of the song, it seems like it's going to be a song about 9/11, but that just doesn't really fit the rest of the context of the song, in my view. |

Fenway Park – Letter Lyrics

The lead singer of the band used to be in a band with somebody who died in a fire (and to whom the album is dedicated), so this song is an obvious tribute to him. |

Daniel Johnston – Circus Man Lyrics

I really think the last line kind of ruins the idyllic nature of the song (although the lyrics really aren't as innocent as one might think upon first listen). |

Dream Theater – This Dying Soul Lyrics
|
The line "Brace yourself man" comes from the Bible; late in the book of Job, God says "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me" a couple times. The context of this part of Job is the all-powerfulness of God and helplessness of man. I think this fits in well with the context of the song/AA suite. |

I've found that this is a fitting song to listen to at about 7 am, driving home from an all night shift as the sun comes up. |

Big Wreck – West Virginia Lyrics

|
I wonder if it's about a realization that somebody is not who they expected, and is more "West Virginia" than "Virginia", since West Virginia is often perceived to be more of a backwoods, rural place. |

Does anybody else think this song might have been inspired by A Portrait of the Artist of a Young Man by James Joyce? |

I've suffered from severe depression before and at times I would just sleep away my days in the hopes I would either not wake up or that it would just go away when I woke. That selection struck a chord with me. |

What on earth does the encouraging of ice cream have to do with anything? That doesn't seem that special. |

Morningwood – Snobby Little Elf Lyrics

I don't think these lyrics are quite right, and I have not the slightest clue what this is about, but every time I listen to this song, the part where Chantal sings "Hey... this is strange" doesn't escape my head the rest of the day. |

Morningwood – Bipolar Bear Lyrics

This song gives me a knowing smile, since I used to have a bit of a tendency to get involved with women with "issues". |

I absolutely love the guitar intro here and the chugging bass throughout. |

Dream Theater – Scarred Lyrics

I think there may be something to the whole questioning God theory, ending with perhaps a more "positive" resolution than, say, Blind Faith.
You tell me I'm wrong
I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
I show you my hands
You don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn.
Perhaps he feels that he's done so much for God and feels that he's received nothing tangible in return. Maybe "leave me here to burn" is an almost taunting reference to Hell. |

Dream Theater – The Best of Times Lyrics

Another thing that came to mind today: The part of the song right before/as the first vocals kick in remind me of Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John. There are other similarities; a very minor, Gothic beginning followed by an upbeat, almost ecstatic guitar riffs, lyrics about death, similar song length.. |

Dream Theater – The Best of Times Lyrics

For the second straight album, the second to last song on the album is bringing a tear to my eye (like Ministry of Lost Souls did). And I can count the number of times I've cried in the last few years on one hand most likely. |

Black Stone Cherry – Junkman Lyrics

I think this song is written about the Trash Can Man, a pyromaniac in The Stand by Stephen King. The godlike powers remind me of Randall Flagg, his evil boss. |

I saw them tonight, and Chris explained what it was about, but I couldn't understand what he was saying. Before the song, he talked about how the band had spent a lot of time touring in Europe and how good it felt to be home, especially in the Midwest. |

Why? – These Few Presidents Lyrics

Yes, the few presidents in the wallet are very obviously money. No debate there.
I think what it means when he says that they (the bills of money) "can persuade no god" is that nothing at all can change/reverse death. |

I really do think it's about the hospital lore, regardless of whether or not the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are represented in the video. It's funny that every song on this site is either about the Bible or drugs. |
