Story of the Year – Swallow The Knife Lyrics 19 years ago
First, I just want to say I grew up with these guys. They even played my high school several times. They're some of the most talented, amazing guys anyone could ever meet and I'm so glad that they're finally getting the success they more than deserve. Their sound is so different from anything out there right now. It really is. It's awesome, and SOTY kicks total ass.

Anyway, here is my take on the song. To me it's about taking a break during a fight. I know it's not looking too deep into the meaning of each line, but to me it's just about taking a break from a fight when both sides are too stubborn to admit they're wrong. The first verse seems like it could mean that two people have been fighting so long that they've bled themselves dry and now, it's time to take the fight and put it on hold for a while. Tear the thorn from one's side so to speak; let the issues that brought the fight on rest. Agree to disagree is like, let's call a truce for now, and we'll pick it up later.

Swallow the knife is like, letting it go even though it's not what you want to do. Lines get crossed, and words go too far so it comes to a point where both people have to cool off and take some time alone to heal. Praying for night to start over again, to me means that maybe after some sleep, the bad mood will be lifted and things can be talked about more rationally.

The part about making the night be their best mistake and taking time to wipe the blood away could mean that the fight was so bad, let's not have another like it. Let's make this our best mistake and now let's make it better.

This is just my interpretation as I am often the type who likes to take some time on my own to blow off some steam and relax, and clear my head when I'm in an argument because after so long my head gets clouded. That's kind of what brought this on, anyway. I had a fight with my girlfriend and was listening to the CD when the song came on. It's one of my favorites off of Page Avenue, although the whole CD is amazing.

Weezer – Smile Lyrics 19 years ago
I heard this song early, when the album was leaked. When I first heard it I thought instead of saying "your fine face. I can't take," Rivers was saying "your fine ways of sucking dick". Ever since then, I thought this song was about giving head. It's totally plausible though.

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 21 years ago
First, before I share my two cents...I'd like to point out that this site asks me: "What does this song mean to you?". I come to this site, not to find the REAL meanings of songs, but what other people think songs mean. I love to read the other opinions of others because it expands my view on songs. I hope you'll grant me the same respect and merely realize this is just my opinion on the song.

In the book Courtney Love: The Real Story, it says Kurt wrote this song about Courtney and her relationship with Billy Corgan. Courtney had a heart shaped box that she filled with letters from Billy. The box is the box that Dave is flashing in the video. Of course...this is from a book on Courtney Love so it very well may not be true. But the book also says Courtney gave him a heart shaped box filled with seashells and letters, and other things like that.

I think Kurt was a very private person so he wouldn't go out there and say what his song means completely. I think he shared the cancer tidbit truthfully, and so he could save some of the song's meaning for himself and leave it open for interpretation. And this site is here so we can say what we think.

To me the song has taken on a darker meaning. The song seems to have a lot to do with Frances. For example, the lines "Hey, wait, I've got a new complaint, forever in debt to your priceless advice" could refer to sexual intercourse without a condom, resulting in Frances's conception. Also, the song seems to have a undertone that mocks the relationship with Courtney, as if he felt trapped by her. "She eyes me like a pisces, when I am weak", and the song continues thoughout. I think this is especially true when you factor in the Billy Corgan box. No matter how you look at it, I think the song has many different meanings, more than we'll ever know, but it is interesting to read everyone's opinions on the song.

My friend and I are real strange and we said the song could also be about sex because of Kurt's interest in the female form, the birth process and the menstrual cycle. He once gave his girlfriend Tracy a collage made of pictures of diseased vaginas and rotting meat, pasted together. Tracy talked about it in the documentary Kurt and Courtney [I've heard they're airing it on Sundance so you may be able to watch it if you have the channel]. We joked about how it could refer to a vagina and sex because "heart shaped box"...we're um...weird.

I'm surprised no one has touched on it yet, but this song was written about Courteney Cox. It's about their relationship, and how he loved CeCe so intensely.
